To all whom it may concern: 1 Be it known that I, lVILLIAM P. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county of Randolphand State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements 1n vending machines.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of vending -ma'- chines and to provide a simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive coin controlled machine designed for vending nonalcoholic and other beverages in bottles, fruits and various other round objects adapted to roll and feed by gravity to a coin controlled rotary cylinder or carrier which when released by depositing the proper coin in the machine will be free to rotate and deliver the article sold to the purchaser.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vending machine of this character adapted to be operated only by a com of the proper size and weight and capable of automatically tripping the coin from the releasing means when the machine is operated to deliver the article to the purchaser.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a vending machine of this character which will be manually operable and not require a spring or other motor for delivering the article sold to the'purchaser.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor'details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a vending machine provided with. coin controlled mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an elevation partly in section of one end of the rotary cylinder or carrier showing the same in its locked position, Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the carrier or cylinder and partially rotated for causing it to move the cam to operate the lower coin releasing lever, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the coin controlled locking lever, Figs. 6 and 7 are detail vertical sectional views of the front portion of the same, Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view of the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. 6 with the coin supported upon the locking lever for releasing the cylinder or carrier.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a horizontally disposed cylinder or rotary carrier provided with an opening 2 and pivotally mounted at the centers of its front and rear ends and adapted to rotate to'carry the opening 2 from the top to the bottom to discharge the article or articles contained in the cylinder and return the opening to the top for the reception of a new supply. The cylinder or carrier 1 is designed for the sale of bottled beverages, fruit and other round objects which are adapted by gravity to roll'into the cylinder which when rotated discharges one article and cuts off the supply and maintains the supply in condition for automatically feeding another article into the cylinder or carrier when the same is returned to its initial position.
' is designed to be mounted within a refrigerator or other casing having means for de livering the bottles or fruit to the cylinder and for conveying the articles to the pur chaser, but as the particular construction of the refrigerator or casing constitutes subject matter for a separate application, illustration thereof is deemed unnecessary in the present case.
The cylinder or carrier 1 is provided at its rear endwith a horizontal pivot 3 and it has a disk or head 4 at its front end provided with a central pivot or journal 5 and the said pivots 3 and 5 are journaled in suitable bearings of supporting members 6 and 7 but any other suitable means may be em ployed for mounting the cylinder as will be readily understood. The cylinder is connected at its front end with an operating rod 8 extending through the front wall 9 of the casing and provided with a knob 10 located exteriorly of the casing and adapted to be turned to rotate the cylinder or carrier 1.
The disk or head 4 is provided at its periphery with shoulders 11 and 12 which are engaged by a check pawl 13 and a locking lever 14. The check pawl 13 which is pivoted at one end at 15 to a suitable support is arranged in an inclined position and it extends upwardly at an inclination and its other end rests against the periphery of the disk or head and is adapted to engage the said shoulder to lock the cylinder or carrier against rotary movement, in one direction. The support 16 to which the said check pawl is pivoted is provided with an opening 17 in which the disk or head 4 rotates.
The locking lever 14 which is coin controlled is pivoted at its central portion by a transverse pin 18 and its inner or rear arm carries a weight 19 which maintains the said rear arm normally in engagement with the periphery of the disk or head 4 and at a point in advance of the shoulder 12. By this arrangement the disk or head is locked against rotary movement in either direction until a coin of the proper denomination is deposited in a coin chute 20 and is permitted to rest upon the front or outer arm. of the locking lever to over-balance the counterbalancing weight 19 and lift the inner or rear arm of the locking lever out of engagement with the shoulder 12 as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings. This releases the cylinder or carrierl which may then be rotated by turning the knob 10.
The. locking lever is mounted between a pair of spaced standards 21 which rise from a base or ledge 22 to which is also secured supporting standards 23for supporting the coin chute 20 in proper position over the front arm of the locking lever 14. The standards 21 are preferably formed integral with an attaching plate 24 and the other standards 23 which have lower attaching arms 25 are connected at their upper ends by an integral transverse portion 26 to which the coin chute is secured by a rivet 27 or other suitable means. The lower end of the coin chute terminates above an opening or slot 28 in the front arm of the locking lever 14. The front end 29 of the locking lever 14 iscenlarged and it carries a slide or member 30 provided with an opening 31 having a transversely restricted front portion 32 which is normally arranged over the slot of the front enlarged portion of the locking lever and which is of' a length less than the diameter of the coin to support the same upon the lever in the position illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The slide is connected to the upper end of a rod 33 and it has a plurality of depending lugs 34 which extend through slots 35 and 36 of the front or other arm of the locking lever and one of the slots is perforated for the reception of a pin or key 37 for securing the slide or member to the front arm of the lever.
The rod 33 which is 'angularly bent to clear the operating rod is secured at its lower end to a front arm of an intermediately pivoted lower approximately horizontal lever 38 mounted on a transverse pivot 39 between the standards 21. The upper end .of the rod 33 operates in the slot 36 of the front arm of the locking lever and the front arm of the lower lever is connected with a coiled spring which is adapted to urge the front or outer arm of the lever 38 downwardly to move the slide or member 30 outwardly and thereby withdraw the supporting portion of the said slide or member from beneath a coin to permit the latter to .drop through the opening in the front arm of the locking lever 14. The rear arm of the lower lever extends into a cam groove 40 which has an inwardly projecting portion 41 adapted during a portion of the head or disk 4 to permit the inner or rear arm of the lower lever to approach nearer the center of the disk or .head under the influence of the spring 42 to cause the slide or member 30 to move outwardly and after the coin has been permitted to drop through the slot of the locking lever 14 the cam groove forces the inner or rear arm of the lower lever 38 outwardly ordownwardly and returns the slide or member 30 to its inner or supporting position. The coin chute 30 extends to the exterior of the'casing to a suitable coin receiving slot 43 of a plate 44 and the mechanism may be constructed to be operated by a coin of any desired denomination, it being primarily intended for the sale of nickel goods.
What is claimed is 1. A vending machine including a rotary disk or head provided with a cam groove having an inwardly extending portion,
tary movement, said locking lever being provided with a slot, a slide mounted on'the locking lever and having a coin supporting portion and a slot adjacent to the same and movable to carry the slot to the coin to permit the said coin to drop through the locking lever and means actuated by the disk or member for operating the slide.
3. A vending machine including a rotary disk or member, a locking lever engaging the disk or member to hold the same against rotary movement, said locking lever being provided With a slot, a slide mounted on the locking lever and having a coin supporting portion and a slot adjacent to the same and movable to carry the slot to the coin to permit the said coin to drop through the locking lever, and a lever actuated by the disk or member and connected with the slide for operating the same.
4. A vending machine including a rotary disk or member having a cam, a locking lever pivoted intermediate of its ends and having one arm engaging the disk or head for holding the same against rotary movement, a coin chute located above the other arm of the lever, a slide mounted on such arm of the lever and located beneath the coin chute for supporting a coin, and slidable to dislodge the coin, a second lever pivoted intermediate of its ends and having one arm arranged to be engaged by the cam of the disk or member and a rod connecting the other arm of the cam actuated lever with the said slide.
5. A vending machine including a disk or head, a locking lever fulcrumed intermediate of its ends and engaging the disk or head to hold the same against movement, said lever being provided with a transverse coin slot 7 and having longitudinal slots, a slide arranged on the said lever and provided with a transverse slot having a constricted coin supporting portion and movable to permit a coin to drop through the slot of the lever, said slide being provided with means operating in the said longitudinal slot for guiding it, a second lever fulcrumed intermediate of its ends and engaged by the disk or member and a rod extending from the last mentioned lever and operating in the slot of the locking lever and connected with the said slide.
