Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. WELCH AND ANDREW A. WHEELER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES AND STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,991, dated September 12,V 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JOHN S. WELCH, of Boston, in the county of Suiiolk and State of Massachusetts, and ANDREW A. WHEELER, of Boston, in the county and State af'oresaid, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Table or Stand; and that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a table or stand more especially intended for use by invalids confined to bed 5 but it is susceptible of employment for other occasions, as will be obvious from the description of its construction, hereafter given.
The table or stand is so constructed as to be susceptible of adjustment to varying heights and inclinations, and to be brought beyond the edge of the bed and over the same.
In the accompanying drawing my improved table or stand is illustrated, Figure l being a partial longitudinal elevation and section, Fig. 2 an end view.
A in the drawing represents a base or foundation, provided with knobs or legs, B, through which it rests upon the door, and at or near one end is provided with a iiXed upright post or standard, C, which can be made of any suitable or proper design. This post C is cored or bored out through its center, and within is arranged a rod, D, free to slide up or down. This rod D, at its upper end, carries a table, E, that at or near one end is hung to it so as to be inclined more or less, or made level, according as may be desired, by and through a semicircular plate, ai, secured to under side of table E, and arranged to swing on a fulcrum-pin, b, of the rod D; F, a thumb-screw in rod D, for holding table E in its adjusted position by bearing on plate a; G, a thumb-screw in post C, for holding table-rod D iiXed in its adjusted position to hold the table at a greater or lesser height. The rod D is grooved at f for a portion of its length, into which the screw Gr sits, holding the rod D from turning; H, a spiral spring, arranged in core of post C, below rod D, for automatically raising the table E when the screw G is released from pressing 0n its rod D.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The elongated base A having at one end a hollow post, C, in combination with the table E and rod D, with the table hung at one end of its under side, through plate a, on a fulcrum, b, of said rod D, and with said rod D arranged within said hollow post C, to be raised by a spiral spring, H, and to be secured from turning as well as in its adjusted height by a set-screw, G, and groove f, the whole as and for the several purposes described.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 3d day of June, A. D. 1871. JOHN S. WELCH.
ANDREW A. WHEELER.- Witnesses:
EDWIN W. BROWN, ALBERT W. BROWN.
