CEAlLLES ROBERT BAli'G OE HEW YORK, N.
ITNITIP'G' DEVICE FDR EXPZi'JSIVE-EHGINES.
Mum:
Application filed February 6, 1313.
T0 at? whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gunners R. BANGS, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented. a certain new and useful improve ment in Igniting Devices for Explosive- Engines, and do hereby declare that the follovving is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The objectof my invention has been to provide an igniting device for explosive engines which shall be exceedingly simple in construction. and operation, and shall ciently i nite the combustion mixture, and particularly one which can be operated by the compression of the gases and Without an electric or other sparking device, and one which need not increase the diiiiculty of cranking the engine-so greatly as to require an automatic starting device, and to such ends my invention consists in the igniting device for explosive engines hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings--the ligure is a cross-sectional view of a portion. of an engine cylinder (with its piston) and having form of my starting device applied thereto.
My invention is capable of embodiment inmany Cllillfiflliforms, and While the erabodiment WlHCll I shall illustrate and describe 1s the bestembodnnent known tome,
it is to be regarded as typical only of manypossihle embodiments, and my invention is not to be confined thereto. In the illustrated embodiment I have shown a cylinder 1 and piston 2 of an explosive engine, the piston being moved by the piston rod 3. On the cylinde 4: I have provided an i nition cylinder 5 which, in the present innce, is cast in one piece with the engine linder. I desire to compress a portion the explosive mixture the ignition cylinderto a pressure at which the charge will automatically ignite and communicate the combustion thus created to the main charge in the engine. For this purpose 1 provide a piston 6 to be forced into the ignition cylinder, the piston preferably being carried by the moving parts of the engine proper, as by the piston red. I also desire to afford communication between the conr pressed in the ignition cylinder and theniaiu ch: e in ngine c 'ui. cylinder, and to v I the ignition in the accomplish these .irposes l believe the Specification of Letters Patent.
linder, after Patented July d, 1M6,
Serial No. 746,545.
following construction is ethcient and con-. venient. The piston 6 is formed on or carried by the free end of a tube 7, which latter is screwed upon a stud 8 formed on the piston rod. The piston is provided'with a hole 9 through which the combustion may travel to the interior of the tube 7, and the latter is provided with holes 10 at such a distance from the piston 6 that when the latter has entered the ignition cylinder "to the maximum extent, the openings 10 shall be at least partially Without the ignition cylinder and thus communication Will be .nrfordedfrom the ignited portion. of the gases through the hole 9 and by Way of the interior or" the tube 7 and through the openings 10 into the main cylinder. I also preferably provide openings 11 near the upper end of the tube for 21 purpose to be described.
In the operation ofiny device in the form illustrated, the ignition cylinder and its piston ere preferably made of sufficiently small diameter so that the compression of gases in said cylinder be effected by hand (in ordinary automobile engine) and not necessarily require an automatic starter. The opening 9 is made suiiiciently small so that, at the speed which it is possible to give the piston 6, the gases in the ignition cylinder will be suih'ciently slow in escaping through the opening 9 to still afford the desired degree of compression to ignite the gases from the compression clone. On starting the engine, the down stroke of the piston 2 will draw in the explosive charge vfrom any source not shown). stroke of the piston 2, the piston 6 will be driven into the ignition. cylinder and the charge compressed therein. The clearance in the ignition cylinder is made smaller than that in the, engine cylinder so that when trically, the gases in the ignition cylinder will be compressed to a degree at which the.
compression alone will ignite them. The
gases in the ignition cylinder being ignited, the ignition will travel through the opening Upon the up 9 and down the interior of'the tube 7 and i 7 piston be ng provided with 'CHFZE'ELXJX,
within the main. ovlinder. and the Way for a portion of the 11 to enter the said. tube. the tube screwed on the oi piston i-o-t u? piston can nste l on 81716. down h screwingthe tube 111) and down on log: and thus the clearance the igi cyliniilei may be regulated.
I claim:
