IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES O. TWINING, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective view of my device as arranged for withdrawing the contents of the can.

In the shipment of hydrocarbon or other oils from jobbers or wholesale dealers to those who retail the same it has become a custom to employ cans of a considerable capacity, which, for protection during transportation, are incased in wood, and which cans, when emptied of their contents, are returned by said retailers. From the size of these cans or shipping-cases it is exceedingly difficult to tilt them so as to withdraw their contents through the filling-nozzle, and various expedients have been employed for effecting such object without change of position of said cases, which expedients have, however, been open to serious objections, such as a large increase of cost in the case, difficulty of operation, liability to injury and leakage during transportation, 850., so as thereby to prevent the use of the same. To remove these objections is the design of my invention, which consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the can, faucet, wooden case, and inclosin g metal shield, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a wooden box or casin g that corresponds in general interior size and shape to and incloses a sheet-metal can, B. From its lower side to or near its upper side one of the corners of the can B is cut away upon a line having a relative angle of about fortyfive degrees with the sides thereof, so as to leave between the face thus formed and the corner of easing A a horizontal space sufficient to contain a faucet, O, which faucet is secured within, and extends directly outward from, said face, near its lower end, and, being provided with the usual plug 0 and handle 0, furnishes a means whereby the contents of said can may be withdrawn. The casing A immediately in front of the faucet G is removed upon a line corresponding to that of the corner face of the can, and the opening thus formed is inclosed by means of a corresponding metal shield, D,which is hinged at one side to said case so as to permit it to be swung sidewise when access to the faucet is desired. When closed, said shield is secured in place by means of one or more wood screws, which are inserted within the case through suitable openings formed within the vertical edge of said shield opposite to the hinge. The plug and handle of the faucet are so arranged as to close the passage through the latter when the shield is closed, so as thereby to prevent all possibility of leakage during transportation, or unless said shield is first opened.

The usual openingE within the top of the can for filling the same completes the device, the advantages of which are as follows: First, the greatest possible convenience is afforded for withdrawing the contents of the can in such quantities and at such times as may be desired. Second, the shippingcase is as secure in all respects as though no faucet was employed. Third, the original cost of the device is but slightly greater than those in common use, and so little liability exists to injury or derangement of parts as to render improbable any expense for repairing.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- The hereinbefore-described packing-case for oils, consisting of the can B provided with the corner face and with the opening E, the faucet O, and the case A provided with the metal shield D, when the several parts are constructed and combined, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
