Be it known that I, Jon E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Raleigh, county of Wake, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loom-- Cams, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
The object of this invention is to provide -a slmple expedient for repairing a well known type of loom cam when the periphery thereof becomes so worn that it would have to be removed and replaced by a new cam. My device avoids the waste of time and labor as well as of metal that would occur when necessary to remove and junk the worn cam.
In the drawing Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of opposite sides of the well known type of Crompton and Knowles loom cam provided with my device; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a cam taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the patch removed. In the drawing annexed, a. designates the 7 body of the usual picker cam now in extensive use on the well known Crompton' and Knowles loom. Bolted to opposite sides of thiscam at approximately diametrically opposite points are the usual picker point I) and the check point of wabble c. For the proper positioning and adjustment of these points on the cam, there is usually provided in the cam body a a series of four slots d through which the bolts .6 for securing the points to the cam are passed, the points bev ing provided with suitable bolt holes or slots positioned so as to coincide with the slots in the cam body.
In the operation of the loom, the picker ball wears off the periphery of the cam body, as shown in the drawing at f, at points between the cam points 6 and c. It is now the general practiceto remove the points I) and 0 and junk the cam body. With my device 'I avoid this waste by bolting to the side of the cam body an approximately semi-circular plate 9, this plate be ing bolted to the same side of the cam body that the picker point I) is bolted to. This patch plate 9 issufiiciently long to have its end abut against the ends of the picker point so that the picker point is braced or backed up by this patch plate. The patch plate is provided with .arcuate slots ment therefor and thus assist inholding it' in proper position.
It will be observed that the shape of the patch plate is suchthat when secured'in position it bridges both of the worn places in the cam and thus provides a bearing-surface for the picker ball or roll. To further insure the cam patch being held rigidly in place on the cam body, I'provide in the inner surface of the same a groove which fits over the usual annular rib j formed on the side of the cam body a.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I
1. A loom cam consisting of a body part provided with a series of slots, a picker point and a check point and bolts for securing these points to the body ofthe cam, and a patch plate approximately semi-circular in shape and provided with slots, this plate being fastened to the cam body by the same bolt that fastens the check point and havmg one end abutting'against the adjacent end of the picker point.
2. A loom cam consisting of a body part provided with a series .of slots, a picker point and a check point and bolts for securing these points to the body of the cam, and a patch plate approximately semi-circular in shape and provided with slots, this plate being fastenedto the cam body by the same bolt that fastens the check point and having one end abutting against the adjacent end of the picker point, the cam body being provided with an annular rib and the patch plate being provided with a similar groove in its inner face to receive said rib.
