RAILWAY-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July .4, 1916.
Application filed April 26, 1916. 7 Serial No. 93,806.
-To all whom it may concern base flange of rails and firmly hold said rails against vertical, longitudinal and lateral displacement. This object I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which I have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with a portion of two rails held in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one ofthe duplicate members of which the tie is made. Fig. 8 is an edge view of the same member. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of a tie showing the contact line of its two members.
The present invention is intended to supply a metal tie which may be constructed and assembled on the road bed and the two parts of which it consists being duplicates, in order that in forming or casting them only one piece need be constructed, and that when assembled and the rails are placed thereon, they are held in gripping contact with said rails by an inexpensive key. In the drawings the two members are shown as 1 and 2 although it is'to be understood that l is the duplicate of 2, which has been simply reversed in position. It consists of a piece of metal forged or cast into the shape desired, having two upstanding rail flange engaging lugs 8, both of which are inclined to engage the same side of two rail flanges. A key receiving and holding lug 4: is integrally provided on the upper face of each of said members l and 2 and positioned contiguous one of said flange engaging lugs 3 on the opposed tie member when the tie is assembled. A horizontally disposed transverse hole 5 is provided in said lug twhich is in alinement with one portion of a triangularly slotted opening 6 that is provided in the said flange engaging lug 3 on the opposed tie member, and within said holes 5 and 6 a keying pin or spike 7 is to be driven to hold saidmembers l and 2 together, and the said lugs3 in gripping contact with the base flanges of the I rails. An irregular contacting face A is formed or provided as one edge of each of said members 1 and 2, a portion of which face is vertical and parallel with the outer edge, from the end of the member to a point below where the outer edge of the flange of the rail will bear. This portion of said face A is shown at a. The continuation of said face A is next formed or provided by a vertical angular cut to a point below where the inner edge of the same rail tread will bear on a line crossing said flange at practically 30 degrees. This portion of said face A is shown at b. The central and next portion of said face A is provided by a vertical angular cut extending from the last mentioned angular out from the inner edge of the said rail tread to the inner edge of the other rail tread. This portion of said face A is shown at c, and the vertical plane of this face 0 will cross the central longitudinal vertical plane of the assembled tie at its medial point. The continuation of said face A is next'provided by a vertical angular cut, to a point below where the outer edge of the flange of the last mentioned rail will bear, and parallel with the angular face below the other rail. This portion of the side face A is shown at d, and the remaining face is formed by a cut parallel with the outer edge of the tie and extends to the end of the tie and shown at e. The lower corner edges of said faces, a, b, c, d and e are beveled or cut away, and when the two members 1 and 2 are assembled in position under and in gripping contact with the two rails the said beveled cuts will form an inverted V-shaped crooked track or opening to prevent dirt or gravel from getting between the two sections of my tie in assembling and drawing them together. The purpose of the triangular shaped opening 6 in the lugs 3, is to allow the said key 7 to enter the wider portion of the opening 6 and as said key is driven into place it tends to draw the members 1 and 2 longitudinally and cause the lugs 3 to more firmly grip the flanges of the rails.
A shim of any desired material may be inserted beneath the flanges of the rails in order that flanges of different widths may be used if desired, or in order to insulate the rails from the ties the shimming material may be passed between the rails and the tie and its lugs 3.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. A railway tie consisting of two interlocking metal plates; upstanding integral flange engaging lugs on the upper face of each; a key guiding integral lug on the same face; and a key to be driven through said guiding lug and one of said flange engaging lugs contiguous.
'2. A railway tie consisting of two, duplicate interlocking metal plates each having a vertical edge or face which coincides with a similar face when the two metal plates are contiguous a portion of said face being par- Gopies oi this. patent may be obtained for allel with the other edge and two other portions parallel with each other and at ,an angle of 60 degrees from the first described parallel portions and positioned across the rail bearing parts of the tie; and a central portion of said face cut at an angle extending from the inner edge of one rail tread to the inner edge of the other rail tread and crossing the central line of the assembled tie at its medial point; upstanding integral flange engaging lugs on each plate coacting with the same lugs on the interlocking plate; and a key holding lug on each plate.
Intestimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two "witnesses.
