This-invention is a ribbon mechanism for typewriters, and it pertains, more particularly, to means for shifting a vmulti-color ribbon adapted for use on front strike machines. i} e. that kindknown as visible The object is to provide a simple 'efiic ient construction by which a multi lor. In a practical embodiment of the invention-the lever system includes three levers, one of which is connected to the vibrator for directly imparting movement thereto. a second lever is provided with a cam which contacts normally with a cam on the first lever, and a t-hird lever cooperates with the v second lever and with an escapement lever, the arrangement being such that the operation of the'escape nent to control-the platen carriageactnates 'thelever system to im-- part movement tothe ribbon vibrator.
The-lever system described is useful, more particularly, in connection with a shiftable guidemember of the character disclosed in a prior application Serial No.'65'6,170, filed October :23, 1911, wherein the guide member and the vibrator are shiftable out of operative posit-ions relative to- .the platen carriage, the latter being removable from the typewriter in order that the whole ma-" chine may be so com'pactlyarranged as to facilitate transportation. Said lever system performs the function, mainly, of permitting the guide member andthe vibrator to be turneddownwardly and upwardly with-- out -disarranging the levers, i. e. disconnecting any part ofthe actuating mechanism for said vibrator to secure said folding movement. The means for effecting the variable movementis a collar positioned on the esca'pement lever for sliding movement there-' on, said collar cooperating with the third lever so as to be movable toward or from the fulcrum thereof and operating, when the escapement lever is actuated, .to impart movement to said third lever, the extent or degree of such movement depending upon the distance of the collar from the lever fulcrum. The vibrator is actuated each time a key is struck, and when pressure is removed from the key, the vibrator is lowered to its normal position, shown in Fig. 10, whereby the writing line is fully exposed to the view of the operator. In
this connection it is desired to state that the vibrator is moved to diiferent positions on the guide K depending upon the posi- 1 tion of the collar R upon the escapement lever. This position of the collar is determined by the position of lever S. Assuming that a two color, or black and red, rib
bon is used, the mechanism is adjusted to I write the letters in black when the lever S occupies the full line position'of Fig. 5, and the collar, R occuples the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and, accordingly,
the vibrator will be moved by the escape i ment lever operating the system of levers to the position of Fig. 11, thus resulting in the type head striking through the black color section of the ribbon. For writing throughthe red color section of the ribbon the lever S is moved to the dotted line position of Fig. 5, and the collar R is slutted toward the free end of escapement lever S", as shown in Fig. 3. Now when t 'escapement is actuated by the depression of the key lovers, the collar R imparts an increased throw to levers O P Q, and the vibrator is moved to a higher position upon the guide, thus presenting the red color section of the ribbon in the path of the type bars. Obviously, the change from one color to the other of the ribbon may be effected easily and quickly by a simple movement ofthe shifting lever S.
