To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Mc- KENNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the lcoimty of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Portable Sand and AGravel riers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable otiiers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates broadly to driers for sand, gravel and similar materials, and more particularly to that type which is both lmockdown and portable and has for its object to .provide a cheaply constructed 1device of this character which may be operated with a minimum amount of fuel.
Another object of my invention is to provide a drier composed of a plurality of heaters so constructed as to give a great' amount of radiatin surface.
Still another object is to provide novel means for holding the sand or other material to be dried in position on the heaters.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompan g drawing: Fi re 1 represents a drier ormed of a plura ity of heaters constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an end view of one of these heaters; Fig. 8 is a central vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4- Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section tahen on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment illustrated wherein similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates broadly my im roved drier composed of a plurality of orizontally alined eaters 2, arranged in a arallel row. These heaters 2 are referab y formed of horizontally exten in cylindrical sheet metal pipes 3 in which re is desi ned to be built or placed. At one end of eac heating chamber 3 is formed a vertically extending outlet ipe 4 preferably formed of a pi e similar in diameter and construction to t e pipe 3. By referring to Fig. 8, it will be readily evident that this construction provides a heater of ri ht-angular formation, the fire chamber of w ich is considerably longer than the outlet pipe. The inlet end of each of these heaters is provided with a substantially square vertically extending plate 5 which has an openin 6 formed therethrough of a diameter similar to the outer diameter of said pipe 3, said openin being disposed nearer to the bottom of said plate than'the top and is designed to receive the end of the ipe 3 and form a sup ort therefor for spacf ing said pipe above t e ground. Guides 7 are formed in the outer face of each plate 5 and are desi ed to slidably receive a suitable door 8. he plates 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 1, are designed in overlapping engagement with each other to hold the sand or other material to be dried, in place on the heaters. This arrangement allows the total length of the pipes to be utilized, thus savin a lar e amount of heat which would ot erwise e lost.
The outlet pipe 4 of my improved heater has a damper 9 arranged in its outer end for controlling the draft through the heating chamber. This damper in conjunction with the sliding door 8 assists materially in reducing the amount of fuel consumed and allows the drier to be operated at a minimum cost. Secured to the outer side of each of these outlet pipes 4 is a downturnedl hook 10 designed to receive therein a vertical transversel extending sheet metal plate ll which is a apted to retain the material to be dried at the outlet end of the heaters in a manner similar to the lates 5. Adjacent the outlet end of each o the pipes 3 and on their lower sides is secured a foot l2 which is adapted to raise this end pipe an amount equal to that which the front end or inlet end is elevated.
In the operation of my improved drier the heaters are first placed side by side on the ground as shown in Fig. l with the flanges 5 in overlappin engagement and the plate 1l is then lace in osition. When the heaters are t us place in parallel arrangement on the bed of material to be dried, other material of a similar nature is then heaped on the top of the driers and the several heating chambers are then ready to receive the lire therein. When the material is sufficiently heated, the heaters are disassembled and removed to a new location where they are again set up and recharged.

In a'knock-down portable drier, a plurality of heaters arranged in parallel relation, an upright plate secured to one end of each of said heaters, said plates' being arran d contiguously, a removable plate exten ing transversely of the heaters atthe opposite end, said plates being adapted to retain the sand on the heaters, and means for retaining said removable plate in position.
7. In a knock-down portable drier, a plurality of heaters arranged in parallel relation, an upright plate secured to one end of each of said heaters, said plates being overlappingly engaged for retaining the sand on said heaters, a removable vertical plate extending transversely of the heaters at the opposite end, and means for retaining said removable plate in position.
8. 4An article of manufacture comprising a horizontally extending fire chamber, an upright outlet pipe extending from one end thereof, sand retaining plate secured to thefree end of said horizontal chamber and extending thereabove, said plate also extending below the same to form a support, an ad" ditional support at the opposite end of the chamber, securing means on said outlet pipe, and an additional sand retaining plate held by saidmeans.
