ELECTRIC S non. l
Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application filed November 2, 1914i. Serial No. 369,977.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, HERBERT Hanna' Bnanr and Winnaar J lili-'immuun citizcns ot the United Kingdom of Great Britain and reland, and residents of 78 Upper Thames street, London, England7 and. of Sulfoll; lVorks, Oozells street, Birmingham, England, respectively, have invented certain new and useful improvements in illectrio Switches, of which the following is a speciication, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the saine.
rllhis invention relates to electric fused switches and. has vfor .its object to provide a simplified construction of quick malte-andlorealr fused switch, which shall be stroi'ig` and of durable character, and which the parts thereof maybe easily adjusted, assenr hlechreinmfed and replaced.
The switch. according to the invention comprises a toggle or knuckle jointu the arms oi which are pivcted on a 'inse tridge which is adapted to he moved into en gaggeiiient with contacts provided preferably within the switch casing. l iis arrangement ierinits of the speedy assembling ot the parts during the process of manirtacture; it also permits of Ithe speedy replacement out the parts tor the purpose of renewal, and has the still 'further advantage ot providing; a revolving switch Contact whichwill lengthen the life of the switco. by reason ot' the tact that the contact can beY txirned into several positions. l'
The invention will reference to the accompanying drawings wherein the invention is shown as applied to a double pole switch. The double pole switch has heen selected ior describing the invention in detail but it will ce understood that the invention can also he applied to single or multiple pole switches.
flTigure 1 is a section .through the switch casing or box, and Fig. 'i2 is a plan view of the toggle mechanism' of the switch.
Referring to the drawings whereon the same reference letters indicate the same or similar parts, t is the casing or box within which the switch is mounted. The casing may he ci? any convenient shape and is prov'ded with a cover b. lNithin the casing` a ai d preferably to the cover l) is secured in any suitable manner, as oy pins d, a hownow he described with e sired.
shaped spring c, the ends e, f, of which act upon the ends g, L, of the toggle or knuckle joint.
ln the preferred form oli the invention for a double pole switch the joint comprises a central portion y', and the two end portions e, Z. The central portion and preferably the two end portions are composed of insulating material, or are insulated and are moved by any suitable means such as a rod -m on which a knob or handle 'n is arranged.A lhe ends of the central portion j are shaped into a concave groove to receive a cartridge p. The faces ot the portions lc, Z, adjoining the ends ot the central portion are also provided with a concave groove to engage the cartridge p.
The baclrwardand forward movement of the central portion j causes the fuse cartridges to engage and he discharged .trom contacts not shown which may be xed in the switch casing in any convenient and known manner. The cartridges act as pivots between the central portion j of the joint and the two end parts 7c and Z9 the grooves in the end parts if: and Z having a small movement on the cartridge. When it is desired to replace a cartridge fuse it is only necessary to push hack the spring, which may easily loe done by hand, thus releasing the cartridge and permitting it loeing removed and another one slipped into its place. 'lhe central portion may be constructed to carry cartridges, Jfuse carriers or contact hars in addition to the cartridges at its ends and thus a. multiple pole switch is obtained, Generally the depth of the grooves and the pressure of the springs are sullicient to hold the fuse cartridges; against displacement, but additional means for holding or locking them more or less per-l manently in place may loe provided if deot a handle or lever passing through the side or ends of the switch case, or 1n any other convenient manner.
Any circular form oi2 fuse carrier may be substituted for the fuse cartridge and a brass rod or tube may he employed instead of the fuse carrier or fuse cartridge'.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :*a
l. An electric switch comprising in coin-` hination a case, a cover therefor, a spring The joint may be operated by means adapted to be moved into engagement with joint, and a fuse cartridge between each ofv the adjacent concave portions on the cen-- tral portion and the outer portion and contacts by said handle. i
2. An electric switch having in combination a case, a. cover therefor, a.bow=
shaped spring secured to said cover, altoggle joint having one end of each of the outer portions of the joint pivoted vto said spring the other ends of said outer portions being concave, fuse cartridges between said l`concave portions and concave portions on the central portion of the toggle joint, and a handle for moving the joint so as to bring said cartridges into engagement with contacts.
3. An electric switch comprising in combination a case, a cover therefor, va bowshaped spring secured to said cover', an insulated toggle joint having one endv of each of the outer portions of the joint pivoted to said spring, fuse cartridges between said outer portions and the central portion of the switch, said cartridges being capable of being rotated, and a handle for-moving4 piece toggle joint the central piece of which is secured to an operating handle and the end pieces are spring controlled, means being furnished at the adjoining ends of the central piece and the end pieces to receive a fuse cartridge which acts as a pivot between the said pieces. y l
5. In an electric switch atoggle joint, the parts of which have mounted upon them cartridge fuses which act as pivots between the parts, said joint having a handle by which itis operated. v
6. An electric switchv comprising a three piece toggle joint the central piece of which is secured to an operating handle and the end pieces -are spring controlled, means being furnished at the adjoining4 ends of, lthe central piece and the end pieces toreceive a fuse carrier which acts as a pivot between. the 'said pieces.
