REMINGTON JAMES, OF LOOKPORT, NEW YORK, AND JOHN W. GURRIER, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-SLICERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,944, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, REMINGTON JAMES, of Lockport, Niagara county, New York, and JOHN W. CURRIER, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in VegetableSlicers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on a line passing through its center; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the cutter detached from its frame.

The object of this invention is to divide vegetables into slices having a uniform thickness; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the frame, by means of which the size of the opening or throat in front of the cutter may be increased or diminished at will, so as to permit the removal of thick or thin slices of the vegetables; and, in addition'thereto, said frame may be separated for the purpose of cleansing, substantially as is hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent two strips of wood secured together in parallel lines by means of a third strip, B, attached to their upper edges, and the whole strengthened by means of four cross-braces, O, D, E, and F, placed at suitable intervals between the ends of said parts and extending transversely across between the same. Secured upon the upper side of the frame thus constructed, and over a corresponding vertical opening, is a metal cutter, Gr, having the form shown in Fig. 3, its lower side being beveled upward and forward so as to form a cutting-edge having a V or swallow-tail shape, against which the articles to be out are pressed by means of a head, H, provided at its ends with suitable tongues h, which fit into and slide within corresponding grooves 2' out within the inner faces of two rails, I, that are secured upon the upper face of said frame immediately within its outer edges. As thus arranged it will be seen that the height of the front edge of the cutter above the frame will determine the thickness of the slice that will be cut from any article moved against the former, and that a considerable variation is required in the relative positions of said cutter and frame in order to adapt the device to the different uses to which it may be applied, to accomplish which the following-described means are employed: The frame is divided into two sections upon a line extending forward for a short distance from the front'corners of the cutter, from thence laterally outward, and thence vertically downward, and the sections thus formed are secured in lateral position by means of a tongue of metal, a, extending outward from the end of each side piece A, and fitting into a corresponding groove formed within the contiguous end of the side piece A, the whole being so arranged as to enable the forward section to have a vertical movement upon and with relation to the rear or cutter section. A rod K, pivoted within the cross-bar D, and from thence extending outward through the cross-bars E and F, is provided upon its outer end with a thumb-nut, k, by means of which the outer section is held in longitudinal position with relation to the balance of the frame, and when adjusted to vertical position with relation to the same said section may be firmly secured in place by screwing said nut inward upon said rod.
By this arrangement of parts the device can be quickly and easily adjusted so as to permit the removal from a vegetable of a slice having any desired thickness; and after having been used, by removing the thumb-nut the parts can be separated so as to enable them to be easily and thoroughly cleansed. The peculiar V-shape of the cutter causes the article being sliced to incline toward the center and away from the sides of the frame so as to render the operation more effectual, while the angles presented by the cutting-edges are such as to enable them to sever the vegetable with a comparatively slight expenditure of power, in addition to which said cutting-edges will retain their sharpness much longer than would be possible were they placed at a different angle to the line of the cut.
