Patented July 4, r19.16.
application filed March 9, 1915. serial No. 13,273.'
To fughorn, t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM XV. SMITH,
a Vcitizen of the United States, residing at f Hawthorne, in the county of Los Angeles and State oi'California, .have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Regulators for Incubatore, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This-invention relates to apparatus for controlling the action of hot air currents and has special reference' tothe electric thermovstatic control of incubators and the like.
l In the hatching of poultry it is especially important that the temperature to which `the eggs are subjected, be kept below a predetermined maximum temperature, slight vdrops below 'the minimum temperature not being so glreat an importance. It is also imt at, when the maximum desirable temperature has been exceeded, the eggs be cooled to the minimum.
j' The prlnclpal object of thepresent invention is ,A having novel arrangements for preventing 3 5 to provide an improved apparatus heatin totoo great` a temperature above a desire maximum and for cooling the devlce to the minimum desired upon reaching 'the' upper temperatu' e limit.
ful
Another objectpf the invention is to improve and simpli y the general construction 'oflapparatus of this character.
" `With the above and other objects in view, A
as'vvill be hereinafter set forth, the invention consists in general of certain novel feaof construction and combinations of hereinafter fully described, illustrated arts .m the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed. In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 represents the general layout of an apparatus constructed in accordance with this inl.certain contac .-vention; and lig. 2 is an enlarged detail of In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed,` and which represents merely oneform of such invention, therei's Yshown an incubator casing .provided at. the bottom with the usual air inlet 11 and at the top Y with the ,air outlet 12 controlled by a damper 13. Inthe casing 10 is a heating drum 14 which communicates at one end with a chimney 15 and has a connection 16 at its other end leading to a heater chimney 17 open at o en end being controlled by a damper 18. xtendingr into the lower end of the chimney 17 is the chimney 19 ofi y a f latch arm lamp 20. By this arraiigement,i'idit"V i the I l damper 181s closed the hot products of combustion will all pass through the drum 14 whlle, 1f the damper 1S be open the hot products of combustion will pass out of the top of the chimney 17. In like manner, if. the damper`13 be closed the heated air will be held 1n the' casing 10, while, if said damper 13 be open, the heated air will pass freely from the casing. f
Fixed within the casing 10 is a bracket 21 whereon is mounted van adjustable thermostat 22, preferably of the expansible type. .Pivoted on the bracket 2l is a lever 23 having operative connection with the thermostat as shown at 24. The free end of this lever 1s provided with contact points 25 arranged for selective' engagement with Ithe adjustable contact screws 26 and 27, these'being respectively termed the maximum and minimum contact screws.
At 28 and 29 are located magnets, known as the maximum and minimum magnets respectively. These magnets are connected in multiple to the battery 30 by connections 31, this battery being connected to the lever 23 by a wire 32. v
At 33 and 34 are contact screws pertaining to the respective magnets 28 and 29 andconnected by wires 35 and 36'to the screws 26 and 27.
The dampers 13 and 18 are carried by levers 37 and which are connected by a link 39 and Jfrom the lever 38 depends arod 40 which is connected to the free end of a lever 41 pivoted at 41 and carrying an armature 42 for the magnet 28. This lever 41 also carries, a 43 engageable, when the lever is depressed by energization of the magnet 28, with a latch 44 formed on one 38, pivoted at 37 and 38', andv arm 45 of a bell crank, the arm 46 of which carries an armature 47 for the magnet 29,`the two arms being secured to an insulating block 45 suitone position `or the other, it-
being understood that the weight of the arcombine to move rectionwhile gized, moves the bell crank in the vopposlte direc ion. The bell crank is connected to the'magnets, as at 50.
the magnet 29, when enermature 47 and theweight of the arm-4 6 I the bell crank in onegdi- In operation, When the temperature in the casing l rises to the desired maximum', Say 103 F., a circuit is closed through contact 26 Which energizes magnet 28. This draws down 'the'lever 4l and opens the dampers to permit escape of hot air fromvthe .casing "and hot products of combustion from the topfof the, chimney.'v At the same time the l .latch 44 locks the lever 4 1 in depressed posi- 'eflicient device of. the kind described and. for
the purpose specified.
yIt is obvious that many minor changes may be made ,in4 the form and construction of the invention Without departing from the ,material principlds thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine theinvention to the exact. form hereiiishown and described but it is wished to 'include all such as come'with.-
in thescope claimed.-
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is:-
Incomoination, a` thermostat,.a lever actuated thereby, a battery, a connection IbetWeen the lever and one pole ofthe batd tery, a pair of contactA points arranged on vopposite sides of the lever and 'arranged to be selectively engaged thereby, a pair of magnets vconnected to the remaining pole of the battery, a' pair of dampers, a pair of pivoted .levers each of which carries one of the dampers, a damper-controlling lever operatively connected' to ythe vfree ends of the levers tomove the same in unison, and provided Wth an armature controlled by one of the magnets, a bell crank lever provided with an armature controlled by the remaining magnet, contact points adjacent the arms of the bell crank lever and arranged 'to be selectively engagedy by the respective arms upon change of position of said bell crank lever, electrical connections between said first and second contact points, electrical connections betweensaid magnets and bellcrank v lever, a latch arm carried by the dampercontrolling lever, andv a latch on the bell crank lever'engageable with the latch ,arm upon energizaton of one magnet and disengageable therefrom upon energization of the other magnet.
