Description
15.171016. Wayolz 5611!. No. H8,919.
Patented Sep; 12,1871.
ilvksu/w w I .Jl b W WW 0 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. FOOTE, OF HAMDEN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lNWAGON-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,919, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES B. FOOTE, of Hamden, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Suspended Wagon-Seat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in suspending a WagonboX seat from springs placed at the top of two standards, on which the said seat slides and by which it is guided.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved arrangement of springs and a wagon-box. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, showing some modifications of the parts. Fig. 3 is a partial section, showing some of the parts represented in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the ordinary square box of a road-wagon, with strong wood posts B rising up from the sides, one from each, and supporting a C-spring, D, at the upper ends connected by one of its ends, while the other end overhangs the outside and has a rod of iron, E, depending from it; or it may be a chain, F, and rod G, as in Fig. 2. These rods, which extend downward about to the top of the box, pass through the seat ends H and hold the seat by nuts 1, pins K, or India-rubber springs L and nuts, or by any equivalent means. Inside of the holes through the seat ends or arms for the rods mortises are provided for the post B, which pass through them and guide the seat in moving up and down, and prevent it from swinging. According to one plan the rods will have a number of holes to admit of supporting the seat higher or lower; but when the short rods and chains are used the height of the seat may be varied by hooking the chain upon the spring, which may have hooks capable of engaging any of the links. The rods E have T-heads in this example, and are connected to the spring by entering below said heads in slots in the hook-shaped parts of the springs, which affords a simple and efiicient mode of connecting the seats detachably for re.- IHOVlIlg' them readily when rg quired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The seat of a wagon-box having ends H H, and sliding on two vertical standards, B B, combined with springs D D placed on top of said standards, and from which said seat is suspended in open slots to allow the seat to be raised, lowered, or removed, in the manner described.
The above specificatioi'i of my invention signed by me this 19th day of May, 1871.
JAMES B. FOOTE. Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, T. B. MOSHER.
