CARL SEVERIN. a subject. of the King of Sweden. residing at C h1- cago. in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs: and I d o hereby declare the following to be a. full. clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to chairs. and has for its principal object to provide a chalr particularly adapted for use in theaters, halls and similar places wherein the chairs are arranged in rows and of such construction as to permit the occupant of the chair to move rearwardly without rising so as to increase the space between the rows of seats and permit a person to readily pass by. A

Another object is to provide a chair in which the seat is normally retained in forwardly extended position by gravity.

lith these and other objects in view. the invention consists in the novel construction. arrangement and formation of parts as will be herelnafter specilically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which:

Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view through a theater seat constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on the. line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. -l represents a fragniental perspective view of a. part of the chair seat removed.

Referring to the drawing in det-ail. wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. the numerals 5 indicate the supports or legs of the chair, which, as usual, are arranged in pairs, the legsof each pair beingconnected by the side rails 6. A pluralit-y of horizontally disposed bolts 7 are positioned through a row of horizontally alined apertures 8 formed n each side rail 6 and each bolt is formed with a pair of spaced heads or flanges 9 disposed inwardly of the side rails 6 of each chair. Rollers 10 are rotatably mounted upon the plain portions of the bolts 7 intermediate the heads 9 and are formed with centrally disposed circumferential -grooves 11. Guard strips 12 are secured upon the bolts 7 intermediate the inner heads 9 and the rollers 10 adjacent the forward portions of the side rail 6 and are formed with outward y directed flanges 13 upon their upper edges disposed over the rollers 10.

The chair seat 14 and back 15 are rigidly connected and provided with suitable cushions 16.

U-shaped bearing members 17 having the parallel portions elongated and disposed in horizontal planes are engaged in the cir-A cumferential grooves 11 in therollers 10 carried by the opposite side rails 6 of the relatively stationary-parts of the chair. The web portions 18 of the U-shaped bearing members are disposed rearwardly and constitute stops adapted to engage the rear rollers 10 of the rows to limit the forward movement of the chair seat and back. The parallel portions of the U-shaped members are connected at spaced intervals by U-shape reinforcing straps 19. The rows of bolts on the opposite side 6 thereof are inclined downwardly from their rear ends so that the chair seat 1l and back 15 will move by gravity to the normal position illustrated in Fig. 1 in full lines.

lVhen the seat is V occupied and a person or persons desired to pass in the narrow space between the rows, the occupant exerts rearward pressure upon the seat l-l and the back 15, thus moving the latter rearwardly and increasing the space between the occupant and the next row of seats, permitting the peison to`conveniently pass by.

1. A theater chair comprising pairs of legs. side rails connecting the legs of each pair. said side rails provided with apertures therein. bolts secured within sail a rtures and provided with a head on one end thereof. rollers rotatably secured to said bolts, said rollers provided with a centrally disposed circumferential groove, U -shaped bearing members .secured to the under side of a chair and adapted to receive the rollers between the parallel portions thereof, and a plurality of guard strips secured to the bolts.

2. A theater chair comprising pairs of legs, side rails connecting the legs of each pair. said side rails provided with apertures therein, bolts secured within said apertures and provided with a head on'one end thereof, rollers rotatably secured or.
