To all whoma't may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK 1. Rose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Air-Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in air pumps.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of air pumps for inflating the tires of automobiles, motor cycles and bicycles, and the like, and to provide a simple, efiicient and inexpensive air pump of strong and durable construction, adapted on the upstroke of the piston head to admit instantly to the pump barrel or cylinderbelow the piston head a free flow of air without producing a vacuum, some of the air passing down through the piston head from above the same, and capable 0n the down stroke of discharging the full quantity of air contained in the cylinder below the piston head by efi'ectually preventing the air either leaking back along the sides of the piston head or through the same. This object is attained by providing an inlet for the cylinder beyond the extreme inward movement of the piston head, and then providing a passage for air through the piston rod down through the piston head to a hollow valve chamber formed in the piston head. The valve in said chamber is light and uncontrolled by springs, so that the air rushing down through the passage 23 on the upstroke of the piston head will easily displace the same from the valve seat 29, while on the downstroke the air pressure will keep the valve firmly seated. and also maintain an air tight connection between the ,plunger head and the sides of the cylinder through the peculiar construction of the packing provided on said plunger head.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being under stood that various changes in the form, proportion. size and minor' details of construction, within the scope of the claims,
may be resorted to without departing from the spillt' or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing z-l igure l is a vertical longitudinal sectiona view of an air pump,
is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the piston or plunger of the air pump comprises in its construction a rod 1, and a metallic piston head 2 equipped with a deep cup-shaped washer 3, constructed of leather or other suitable material and adapted in the operation of the pump to be expanded against the interior of the pump barrel or cylinder 4, whereby air is elfectually prevented from leaking past the piston head. The pump barrel or cylinder may be constructed of any suitable material and may be made of any desired size, and it is provided at its upper end withathreaded cap 5 having a central opening 6 through which the piston or plunger rod 1 passes. The pump barrel or cylinder is equipped at its lower end with a base 7, preferably in the form of a threaded cap and provided with an air outlet passage 8 counterbored at the outer portion to receive a suitable nipple 9 for the attachment of a flexible tube 10 to enable the air pump to be con nected with the pneumatic tire in the ordinary manner. The base 7 is also provided with a suitable foot piece 11 preferably in the form of a pivot and adapted to enable the pump to be held down firmly by the pressure of the foot.
The piston head 2, which is designed to be constructed of brass or any other suitable material, consists of a solid upper portion 12 and a hollow ortubularlower portion 13 open at the lower end of the piston head and constituting a valve chamber 14 for the reception of a valve 15. This valve is made of a flat disk, light in weight. but having a comparatively wide area and is uncontrolled by springs or weights in order that it may readily respond to the flow or pressure of air on the upstroke and downstroke of the piston head. The solid upper portion 12 is provided with a central opening 18. and it has a projecting annular valve seat 1? surrounding the lower end of the central opening 16. The central opening is counterbored and interiorly threaded at 18 to receive the lower 'end 19 of the piston rod 1, which is reduced to form a shoulder 20 and threaded to engage the interior screw threads of the piston head. The piston head is provided in the walls of its valve chamber with two sets of perforations 21, the members of each set being arranged diametrically opposite' each other to receive cross pieces 22, constructed of wire or other suitable material and adapted to support the valve 15 on the upstroke of the piston and when the said valve is in an open position. The piston rod is provided in its lower end with a longitudinal bore or passage 23, and it has a lateral outlet 24 at the upper or inner end thereof, and on the upstroke of the piston, the valve opens instantly and permits air to pass through the piston head, the pump barrel or cylinder being provided near its upper end with an air inlet opening 25.
The cup-shaped washer, which is provided with a central opening 26 to receive the piston rod, is clamped between the metallic piston head andian upper metallic washer 27, provided with a central opening to receive the reduced lower end of the piston rod and fit against the said shoulder 20. The metallic piston head is provided with an exterior annular groove 29, having the upper and lower portions of its Walls vinclined or sloping, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The piston head is cylindrical or circular in cross section, and the cup-shaped washer fits snugly against the solid upper portion 12 above the groove 29 and it also projects downwardly at the said groove terminating short of the bottom thereof and provided with an interiorly beveled lower edge 30, located opposite and in spaced relation with the central portion of the annular groove 29. On the downstroke of the piston, the valve 15 closes against the valve seat and the air under pressure enters the space between the cup-shaped washer and the metallic piston head and expands the washer against the interior of the pump cylinder and thereby effectually prevents leakage of air past the piston head, either through the center or around the sides thereof. The valve 15, which is constructed of leather or other suitable material, is of a diameter less than the interior of the valve chamber. The piston rod is equipped at its upper end with a suitable handle or grip 31, which may be of any preferred form.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A pump including a cylinder provided with an air inlet at the inner end thereof, a piston rod having at its outer end a longitudinal bore and a lateral outlet therefor at the inner end of said bore, said bore dischargin through the outer end of the piston ro a piston head provided between its ends with .an exterior annular groove and consisting of a solid, cylindrical upper portion and a tubular lower portion having its bottom open and constituting a valve chamber, said upper portion being provided with a central opening communicating with the bore of the piston rod, whereby the air admitted into the cylinder through the inlet is discharged through the valve chamber of the piston head, a projecting annular valve seat provided around the outlet for the said central opening, a substantially flat, light disk; valve operating within the valve chamber, means for confining the disk valve within the valve chamber and yet allowing its free inand out movement under the influence of the pressure or flow of air, and a flexible cup-shaped washer securedon the upper end of the piston head and projecting downwardly beyond the inner wall of said groove and terminating short of the outer wall thereof, whereby the air pressure is caused to expand the said washer against the interior of the cylinder, and thus prevent air escaping along the sides of the piston head on the down stroke thereof.
2. A pump including a cylinder provided with an air inlet at the inner end thereof, a piston rod having at its outer end a longitudinal bore and a lateral outlet therefor at the inner end of said bore, said bore discharging through the outer end of the piston rod, a piston head provided between its ends with an exterior annular groove and consisting of a solid cylindrical upper portion and a tubular lower portion having its bottom open and constituting a valve chamber, said upper portion being provided with a central opening communicating with the bore of the piston rod, whereby the air admitted into the cylinder through the inlet is discharged through the valve chamber of the piston head, a substantially flat, light disk valve operating within the valve chamber of the piston head, means for con lining the disk valve within the valve chamber and yet allowing its free in and out movement under the influence of the pressure or flow of air, and means for packing the exterior of the plunger head where it contacts with the cylinder so as to prevent cylindrical upper portion and a tubular lower portion having its bottom open and constituting a valve chamber, the hole at the outer end of the piston rod communicating With the valve chamber, whereby the air admitted into the cylinder through the inlet passes down through the bore of the piston rod into the valve chamber, avalve seat provided at the top of the valve chamber, a substantially fiat, light disk valve operating Within the valve chamber and closing against said seat, means for confining the disk valve Within the valve chamber and yet allowing its free in and out movement under the pressure or flow of air, and means for packing the exterior of the plunger head Where it contacts with the cylinder so as to prevent the leakage of the air past the plunger head on the down stroke thereof.
