To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HoNnoKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and

State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Devices, of which the; following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide means to be used in connection with a looseject matter of which refers to a particular fidate or detail of the business, may by the [movement of a single indicating device be forcibly raised above and out of the plane occupied by the remaining leaves, or cards.

My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexed and are a part 'of the specification, in which Figure 1 shows my invention as applied to a loose-leaf card index. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views.

Although I show and describe for the purpose of illustration a specific form of card and containing case, it will be obvious that my invention is not limited thereto, but that it may, by minor changes in the details of construction, all of which will fall within the scope-of my invention to make it appli cable to any and all cabinets or other filing apparatus used for this purpose.

- As shown in the drawings, my invention is mounted in a containing case 1, which has .a plurality of loose leaves or index cards 2 therein. The lower portion of each one of the cards 2 is provided with a series of perforations 7 at predetermined intervals across the face of the card in which are mounted metal tabs or clips which are formed as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with a downwardly extending portion 8; the upper portion is stamped in prongs, the two outer ones being of greater length than the center one,

the ends thereof being provided with lugs adapted to engage the perforations 7, near the lower edge'of the card 2, and are adapted to engage the perforations in the card, the lower end 8 of the tab being adapted to engage the bar whose numeral or letter on the indicator thereof corresponds to the location of the metal tabs. Although I have shown a specific form of metaltab or clip for this purpose, it will be apparent that any clip which will effect operative relations with the rising bars will serve as well.

In the bottom of the containing case are located a plurality of longitudinally movable bars 6, the forward ends of which extend upwardly and at their extremities are provided with push buttons or indicators 3. These indicators may, as shown, be apart of the bars, or they may be attached to the bars at or near their upper extremities. Each one of the longitudinally movable bars 6 is connected to a rising bar 5 by means of toggles 4 which are pivotally attached to the two bars and in their normal position are as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be apparent that the length of these toggles determines the amount-of lift of the rising bars and that they can be of any suitable or desired length. It will be apparent that the movement of the indicator will through the medium of the toggles 4,

operate toraise the bars 5; this causes the bar in its upper movement to engage the lower end 8 of the metal tab, located upon the card in position to register with said bar, with the result that the card to .whichthe metal tab is attached, is elevated above the plane of the remainder. The bars 5 and 6, are brought to their normal position through the medium of springs 10,one end of each of said springs being secured to the containing case 1. The free end of the spring 10 is slidably engaged by the forward end of the bar 5. The result of this construction is obvious. The movement of the indicator operating to move the bar '6 to the rear, in turn elevates the rising bar 5 which slides along the spring 10, whilethe rearward movement of the upwardly extended'por ing metal portion of the tabs 8 in a position to be engaged by the rising bar 5, which will be elevated through the medium of the toggles by the movement of the longitudinally movable bar 6, which has secured to' that unlike card indexes in which the cardsare placed in alphabetical arrangement, a card cannot be lost.

Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

-1. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a containing case, of a plurality of loose leaves, of a series of bars, their forward ends being bent upwardly and terminating in a. flattened portion bearing characters on their surfaces, a plurality of rising bars connected to said bars, all of said bars being entirely within said case, means whereby the movement of the flattened portion operates to raise a pre determined number of leaves above the plane of the remainder, said means being detachably secured to said leaves.

2. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a containing case, of a plurality of loose leaves in said case, a series of bars, their forward ends being bent upwardly and terminating in a flattened portion bearing characters-on their surfaces, a plurality of rising bars connected to said bars, all of'said bars being entirely within said case, a lurality of detachable metal pins secure to a predetermined number of leaves, and engaging certain predetermined rising'bars.

3. In a device of the character descrlbed,

a containing case, a series of bars supported within the case, said bars having their forward ends extending upward and terminating in a flattened portion, rising bars, means for connecting the first mentioned bars, and the rising bars, whereby movement of the connecting means will produce a their forward ends extending upward and.

terminating in a flattened portion, raising bars, toggles for connecting the bars where-' by movement of one bar Wlll produce a relative movement of the other bar, and the tabs engaged by the upper surface of one ofthe bars, so that the tabs will'move with the bars substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising the combination with a containing case, of a plurality of loose leaves, of aseries of bars, their forward ends being bent upwardly and terminating in a flattened portion bearing characters ontheir surfaces, a plurality of rising bars connected to said bars, all of said bars being entirely within said case, means whereby the movement of the flattened portion operates to raise a predetermined number of leaves above the plane of the remainder.
