To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Amos M. CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 919 North Church street, in the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan,
' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expanded Metal, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in expanded metal and process of making the same.
The main objects of this invention are: first, to provide an improved expanded metal; second, to provide an improved method or process of making expanded metal.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is. clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Referring to the lettered parts of the drawing: My improved expanded metal comprises spaced longitudinal bars 1 with open'or expanded work between. The expanded work comprises aplurality of continuous longitudinal strand members 2 and connecting or tie members 3. Each tie member is united at one end to one of the strand members 2 or one of the barmembers 1 and at the other end to an adjacent tie Serial No. 10,552.

The tie members upon opposite sides of the strand members are alternately arranged, the points of union of the tie members to the strand members being substantially spaced so as to permit the bending of the strands between such union points. The other end of each tie member is united to an adjacent tie member between and at a point substantially spaced from its points of union to the tie member and strand member to which it is in turn connected so as to permit the bending of the tie members between such union points. The tie members and strand members in the structure illustrated are of uniform and substantially the same width. This is desirable where uniform openings in the open or expanded work is desired.
The structure illustrated is provided with longitudinal bars 1 spaced but a short distance apart. These bars may be spaced as desired or may be entirely omitted. If the strands 2 are of substantially the same width as the ties 3 as in the structure illustrated they will be uniformly distorted by the expansion but if of sufficiently greater Width than the tie members they will remain straight or substantially straight.
Tn producing my improved expanded metal the sheet of metal is first slit as shown in the blank 4:, Fig. I, and. consists of forming a plurality of double series of alined spaced slits 5', the slits of one series being alternately disposed relative to those of the other. Between the double series of slits 5 is an intermediate series of short slits .6, one end of each intermediate slit being disposed opposite corresponding ends of the alternate slits of the double series.

Portions between the double row of slits have no cross slits, and constitute the plaster.

g In Fig. IV, I show an improved reinforcing member 10 formed of sheet metal and having fingers 11 struck down at its edges and adapted to be engaged'under the strands and tie members as shown in Fig. II. The
- reinforcing member being arranged transversely across the bars 1 and the ties and strands, braces and supports the open work so that it is very rigid and well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed.
In the modified structure shown in Fig. V
the reinforcing member 10 is provided with a single 'row of fingers 11 and reinforcing ribs 12 at each side.
The form shown in Fig. IV has a single reinforcing longitudinal rib 12 between the fingers 11.
My improved expanded metal is well adapted for embodiment in wall structures such as shown in my application for Letters Patent, filed July 7, 1913, Serial No. 77 7 ,646,
of which the present application is a di vision. It ishowever desirable for use in the other relations as expanded metal lath and the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
. 1. An expanded metal-structure of sheet metal comprising spaced bars and a connecting open work comprising strand members and tie members, each tie member being united at one end to a strand or bar, the tie members on opposite sides of the strand members being alternately disposed, their points of union thereto being spaced so as to permit the bending of the strands between such union points, the other ends of the tie members being connected to an adjacent tie member between and at a substantial distance from such tie member points of union with the strands or bars and tie members so as to permit the bending of the tie members between such union points to which its ends are united, the tie members and strands being of substantially the same width.
2. An expanded metal structure of sheet metal comprising spaced bars and a connecting open work comprising strand members and tie members, each tie member being united at one end to a strand or bar, the tie members on opposite sides of the strand members being alternately disposed, their points of union thereto being connected to an adjacent tie member between and at a substantial distance from such tie members points of union with the strand or bar and tie member to which its ends are united so as to permit the bending of the strands and ties between said points of union.
3. An expanded metal structure comprising continuous strand members and tie members, each tie member being united at one end to a strand member and atthe other end to an ad acent tie member between and at substantial distances from its points of union with the tie member and strand to which its ends are united, the tie members on opposite sides of the strand members being alternately disposed, their points of union with the strands being spaced so as to permit thebending of the strands between i in'g continuous strand members and tie members, each t1e member being united at one end to a strand member and at the other end to an-adjacent tie member between and at substantial distances from its points of union wit-l1 the tie members and strand to which its ends are united, the tie members on opposite sides of the strand members being alternately disposed, their points' of union with the strands being spaced so as to permit the, bending of the strands between such union points.-
