ATOMATIC wATER-EEED.
United States, residing, respectively, at La Habra, in the county of Orange and State of California, and at Fullerton, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Water-Feeds, ofy which the followings a specification.
Our ,invention relates to an automatic waterV feed for boilers and in particular to novel and improved means whereby the water feed mechanism is automatically operated when the water within the boiler falls below a predetermined level.
It is an Object of this inventiori to devise novel and improved means whereby a mechanism controlling the Vsteam supply to 'a pum'porinjector feeding -water to the boiler is opened when the water inthe boiler falls below a predetermined level and said steam supply is closed when the water inthe boiler again reaches said level.
Another 'obj ect 'of this invention is to provide a float. chamber .communicating with the boiler and containing a vfloatwhich controls the. steam 'supply to the pump or injector for feeding the boiler..
Another obj ect of our invention iste provide an easily adjustable gear mechanism for transmitting the movement of the float to the valve which controls the jboiler feed pumpor injector. I A
With these and other objects in view, the invention `consistsfni the construction and arrangements 4of/the parts hereinafter described and pointed out inythe appended claims. .ll .y l
In the drawings vwhich form a part of Athis specification Figiire l1 .sho`ws a side elevation partly in crossfs'ection 'of the automatic water feed apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionfof the adjnstablesteam valve 'operating device'takenon line 2-2 of `YFig. 1. Fig. Bis a cross sectionalview of the adlj'usftablestealm valve vojerating device taken on section'line Fig. 4 is a'detail view hereinafter referred to.
A cylindrical.floatfchainber,10 is connected with-the w ztllr space oftheboilerby pipe 11 'leading from the bottm 10'v thereof. VAnc'itlier pipe 12 entering 'the 'float chamber near fthe top establishes. cminunication between the's'team space of said boiler 'and the Specification of Letters Patent.

y upper-part ofthe oat chamber. Slidably mounted rwithin the 'float chamber is a float 14 preferablyconstructed of a hollow metal body and adapted to rise'and fall with the. level 'of the water in the float chamber, the latter being in 'communication with the water in the boiler. Sufficient clearance is leftbetweenthe float and the walls of the float chamber to allow any water condensed above said float to pass to the water below. Centrally secured tothe upper ypart of the float `and passing through a stuffing box 15 mounted on the closure 16 of the float chamber is a rod 17. .This rod is pivoted at the upper end tol an arm 18the latter being in eoY turn pivoted atf19 to .a movable arm 20, the
other `end of arm-2O being secured to pivot 21 carried on alug 22 extending from the periphery ofthe upper part of the float chamber. 4Arm 18 is provided with a series of `bores-23 to which. a'v vertical rod 24 is adjustablysecured at itslower end. l
Theupper end vof rod24 is detachably secured'to'a disk engaging lever 25 by means of sleeve 26, slid'ably mountedon rod 24. Asy shown in Fig. 4, sleevev26 is provided withaset screw 26" for clamping'said sleeve in .anadjuste'd'position to rod 24. Extending upwardly from said. sleeve and on the `side opposite to that of set screw-26 is an upstandin'g lug 42, adapted to receive the disk lever y25. The disk lever 25 vis providedr Vwith a series of openings 25 adapted to cooperate with a set screw 43 provided in said lug which set screw Yholds disk lever 25 in an adjustedrelation to rod 24. Said lever is forked at theV disk engaging end, one fork member extending to and pivoted `on a stud or 'pin 29 'carried on bracket 30,.l which *isy fastened at the upper end to steam pipe 33, which supplies' steam to the` boiler feed pump or injector. The' otherand shorter fork member' of lever arm 25 extends over the face of'disk28 fora short distance, and is provided withfa set screw 27 having a thumbnut. 1 A.
The circular' disk 28'isrotatably mounted von stud 29, `in frontof the longfork mem-V j v ber 'of Ilever '25,"and isjprovided `with aseriesof recesses, circularly arranged adja- "cent tothe periphery df said disk. The, size n yso lever 25 downwardly.
with a cam slot 32 which extends from near the outer circumference to adjacent to and passing for some distance beyond the center of said disk.
A steam pipe 33 supplying steam to a pump or injector employed for feeding water to the boiler Vis provided with a globe valve 34 of any preferred construction. The valve disk 35 has a stem 3G extending through a stuffing box 37 and has adj ustably secured to its threaded outer end a fork 38. Lock nut 3G retains the threaded end of stem 3G in its adjusted position in the intcriorly threaded lug 38 extending from the upper part of fork 3,8. The outer member Aof the fork passes in front of the disk and is provided with a stud or pin 39 which engages the cam slot 32 in disk 28. The other member on fork 38 is longitudinally slotted and is disposed between the bracket and the disk. The stud 29 on which the disk 28 is mounted passes through slot 40. A water glass 41 connected to the float chamber indicates the water level therein.
From the foregoinghdescription the operation of the automatic water feed apparatus will be readily understood. Assuming that the position of the float 14 in the float chamber is at the water level which it is desired to maintain in the boiler, the set screw 27 is loosened and disk 28 is rotated so as to cause the valve 35 to be seated on its seat, thereby closing the steam supply to the boiler feed pump or injector. Set screw 27 is now secured in one of the recesses 31 of disk 28. Vhen the level of the water in the boiler falls, a corresponding fall of the level of water in float chamber 10 will take place, causing float 14 to fall with it, thereby moving rods 18 and 24 and Downward movement of lever 25 causes rotation of disk28, and pin 39 riding in cam slot 32 will be moved vertically downward, thereby moving valve stem 36 downwardly and opening valve 35 and admitting steam to the boiler feed pump or injector. A rise of the water level in the boiler will cause a corresponding rise of water in the float chamber and cause float 14 to move upwardly communieating this movement through rods 18 and 24 and lever 25, disk 28 and valve stem 3G to the steam valve, thereby closing the same as will be understood.
The steam connection 12 leading from the boiler to the upper part of float chamber 10 will counterbalance the pressure in the float chamber and the movement of the float 14 will be solely due to the level of the water therein.
It should be noted that the disk lever 25 can be adjusted vertically and horizontally in relation to rod 24 by means of sleeve 26 on rod 24, while rod 24 can be adjusted in relation to arm 18. The position of pin 39 engaging the cam slot may also be adjusted Vby loosening set screw 27 and by turning the disk until pin 39 occupies the desired position in the cam slot, and then setting set screw 27 again. The length of stem 30 of the globe valve may be adjusted by means of lock nut 3(3.
l hen the pin 39 is positioned in cam slot 32 near the center of the disk, then, due to the curvature of said slot, the vertical movement of the globe valve 35 will be less for the same movement of Alever 25, than when pin 39 is positioned in the cam slot nearer the edge of the disk. It is therefore apparent that accurate adjustment of our automatic boiler feed apparatus can be made, both as to the level of the water desired to be maintained in the boiler, and as to the throw of the globe valve admitting steam to the boiler feed pump or injector'.
7e do not limit ourselves to the specific construction shown and described as changes within the spirit of our invention will occur to those skilled inthe art.
