Be it known that I, FRANK MGMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-W'riter Ribbon-Vibrators, of which the'following is a. Ispecification. A
This invention relates to ribbon vibrator mechanism for type-writers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means not only to eeonomize in the use of the ribbon by operating upon two or moredifi'erent paths or zones when the platen is in either upper or lower case position, but also to provide means for using a multicolor ribbon.
For the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts generally shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, but more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of mechanism of this class applied to a typewriter, and constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the parts; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mechanism shown by Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail view of a part of the mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjustable locking parts. 4
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a. base member of a typewriter frame is designated generally by the numeral 7, and a top frame plate 8 is secured thereto. Secured to the base member 7 is a sub-frame 9 in which are pivoted a number of key-levers 10 pressed upwardly by means of a spring 11. A type bar segment 12 is provided with slots 13 in which are pivoted type bars 14. The type bars are connected to key-levers 10 by means of links 15 so that the depression of the key-lever will operate the type bars. A type bar rest 16 is mounted in the frame and serves as a. support for the type bars. At the rear of the segment 12 is a universal har 17 adapted to be engaged by the type bars 14 when they are actuated by the. key-levers 10. This universal bar is formed integrally with or secured to a frame 18 pivotally connected 4to a link 19,
which in turn is pivoted in the frame so that the universal bar may be moved rearwardly at each movement of any one of the type bar s. Mounted in the top plate 8 are Ways 20 1n which a carriage21 1s movable from side to side of the machine in the well known manner. Rotatable in the carriage is a. platen 22, and depending from the carriage 1s a carriage shift Wheel 23. A carriage shift rail 24 is movable up and down in the frame in the well known manner and engages the carriage shift wheel 23 for movmg. the platen 22 to upper or lower case pos1t1on. Supported by the shift ra'il 24 is an arm 25 in which is pivoted a lever 26. One arm of this lever 26 is connected by means of a link 27 to the universal bar frame 18 or to a support 28 mounted thereon. .The other arm of the lever 26 is formed with a slot 29, and an arm 30 is adjustably connected thereto by means of a bolt 31 and locking nut 32. The arm 30 is provided with a ridge 33 adapting it to be moved parallel with the slot 29, and the bolt 31 is formed with a shoulder 34 (see Fig. 5), by which it is held from turning with respect to the arm 30. A ribbon spool 35 is mounted on each side of the frame/plate 8 for carrying a ribbon 36 which extends through a ribbon vibrator adjacent the printing point of the machine. The ribbon vibrator is connected at its lower end to the arm 30 so that the movement of the arm is communicated to the vibrator and to the ribbon.
It will be understood, therefore, that as the universal bar 17 vibrates it communicates its movement to the frame 18 and through the link 27 and support 28 to the lever 26 and to the arm 30 and vibrator 37. If the carriage iand platen 22 are moved to upper case position the ribbon vibrator is moved bodily with it because of the connection with the arm 30 and lever 26 with the arm 25 attached to the shift rail 24.
In order to vary the printing path or zone upon the ribbon, or in order to change the ribbon to print different colors from a polychrome ribbon the arm 30. and the vibrator 37 are bodily moved with respect to the lever 26 by loosening .the nut 32 and adjustin" the arm 30. This 'adjustment may be efbfected by means of a socket wrench 3S (sco Figs. 3, 4 and 5), provided with a rod 39 which extends laterally and is supported at its outer end by a frame portion 40. A. knul-led nut 41 is provided for the end of the rod and a collar 42 is secured to the rod inside of the frame portion 40 so that the socket wrench will be held in'engagement with the nut so that the nut can be readily adjusted at all times. Since the bolt 31 is secured to the arm 30 the movement of the socket wrench and the rod 39 will act as a a. ribbon vibrator adjustable with respect to A the shift rail and movable with the platen,
means to change the position of the vibrator with respect to the shift rail comprising a slotted lever, an arm to connect the vibrator with the lever, and a locking device to hold the arm in adjustable connection with the lever.
2. In a typewriter, a ribbon vibrator comprising a movable shift rail, a lever pivotally connected to the shift rail having a slotted extremity, an arm connected at one end to the ribbon vibrator, and an adjustable locking screw for connecting the other end of the arm to the slotted end of the lever whereby the position of the vibrator with respect to the shift rail may be varied.
3. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted oscillatable lever having two arms one of which is slotted, an arm having one end connected to the ribbon vibrator and the other end adjustably xed to the slotted end of the lever, and means connected to the other end of the lever for oscillating it.
4. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted oscillatable lever having two arms one of which is slotted, an arm having one end connected to the ribbon vibrator and the other end adjustably fixed to the slotted end of the lever, and a universal bar connected to the other end of the lever.
5. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted oscillatable lever having two arms one of which is slotted, an arm having one end connected adjustably to the slotted arm of the lever and the other to the ribbon vibrator,
' and a horizontally movable universal bar connected to the other end of the lever for oscillating it.
6. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted oscillatable lever having two arms one of :treaties which is slotted, an arm having one end connected adjustably to the'slotted arm of the lever and the other to the ribbon vibrator, a horizontally-movable universal bar connected to the other end of the lever, and typo bars which contact directly with the universal bar for oscillating it.
7. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a lever bodily movable parallel with the vibrator, an arm pivotally connected at one end to the vibrator and having a ridge at the other end contacting with one arm of the lever and adapting it to be moved parallel with the arm, and means to secure the arm adjustably to the lever.
8. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted lever bodily movable parallel with the vibrator and having a slotted arm, an arm pivotally connected at one end to the ribbon vibrator and having a ridge at the other end adapting it to be moved lengthwise of the slot, and an adjustable fastening device to connect the arm rigidly with the lever to the slot in the latter.
9. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted and vertically movable lever, with a slotted arm, an arm pivotally connected to the vibrator, an adjustable bolt and nut for 'zonnecting the other end of the arm to the slotted arm of the lever, and means for adjusting the nut of the bolt from the side of the typewriter.
10. In a typewriter, the combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a pivotally mounted and bodily movable lever havinga slotted arm, an arm pivotally connected at one end to the vibrator-and having a rigid other end to contact with the side of the slotted arm of the lever, a bolt held against rotation by the the arm and adapted to be inserted through the slotted arm of the lever, a nut adjustable on the bolt, a socket wrench for the nut with a stem extending to the side of the typewriter, means for supporting the outer end of the rod and permitting the rotation thereof, and means to prevent the longitudinal movement of the rod and socket wrench with respect to the support.
