Description

" Unir-ED STATES MALCOLM@ LA UNBANCH, OECHICAGO, ILLINOIS, Assmann 'ro NEW YORK SAFE-'rr CHEST COMPANY, OF NEW'YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or, NEW YORK'.
ALARMQEOR SAFETY-CHESTS.
Specification of Letters Patent. PatenteidJy/le a 1916,
. Appiictimi'fiie-a December i5, 190s. seriaiNo. 457,720.
ToA all 'u1/wm #may concern.'
B e-'it known. that I, MALGOLM vE. LAUN- mzANoii, acitizenv of the United.v States, and a resident of. Chicago,- Coolc'co'u'uty, State of Illinois, have invented 'certain new and.. useful- Improvements in Alarms for Safety-A Chests, of which the following. is'a speci- 'My invention relates to electrical burglar alarmsI for safetychests and particularly to alarms which arefset OH when the safety or jewel chest is slightly.tilted,l or moved or drilled in an attempt -to carry it oil" or 'burglarize it. I
AOne of, the Objects of provide a' gravity operated circuit closer adapted, to-Y closeA auf electrical 'circuit' when Y ment and vf iperation of the' gravity Operated ectrjicbell andi the 'contact operated .by he *d'oor'jff'or stopt the safety chest is tilted in any direction, which will. close an alarmcircuit in combi-f natiOnwit-li means for continuing theI aetuation of the alarm -wheii the circuit- 'iat'the circuit'closer is opened, as by restoring the Fig. lisa detailed, vsectional view. of an'aux-- iliary circuit-closer, which' closes the circuit when the vsafe isdrillcd.- Figul is a diagrammatic view-illustrating? the arrange- The safety chest is provided with' suitable walls andwith a door 1, which may be pivot- Y ed as'ati2, and'be provided with an ordinary form. of lock, such vas a combination lock'v 3 with. a' locking bolt mechanism controlled from the handles 4. It may also be provided with the usual handles 5 topermit carrying,`
it froimplace to place and with a level 50 to level it and the gravity operated circuitcloser Within it.
my invention is to- In accordance with myinvention, I provide a gravity operated circuit closer, which is adapted to close an 'electrical circuit when the chest is. tilted in any'direction, as would occur, for example 'if someone tried to carry it off. The form @l varied. As illustrated, it comprises a glass receptacle 6,*wliich carries mercury 7, or some other liquid, at the bottom. The mercury i; n-v
stitiites the liquid terminalof tlieciicuitclo 1;
u s i. l c l 7 and makes'connection with a circuit by the electrode 70. The rigid terminal of tlie cir 'cuit closer preferably comprises a--pl ate 8 securedto a rod 9.. In the best embodiment of the invention, the rigid terminalis'vad- )ustable so as to .vary 'the distaneebetween this circuit closer may be the rigid terminal and the surface of the j mercury. This vai-ies the sensitiveness of' When the 'rigid terminal 1s" the device.
closely adjacent tothe level vof the. liquidterminal,-tlie.circuit willjbeclosed by a's'light tilting or jarring Ofthe safe. If the distanceA flbctween the terniii'ialsis increased, the 4 alarm ivill respondonly after a `greater'tilting or )arring'of thelsafety chest.
; 'The means. for adjusting'A the rigid ter-- ininalinayfbe widely varied. illustrated,
the rod is screw-threadedat 10,' and passes through 7a screwthreaded cap 1l that closes 13 at thetop of therod 9 provides a ready ',-nietliod of turning the rod. The circuit closer closes the electrical circuit 14, which contains a battery 15, and a coil lof anA electromagnetic relay. Y
Suitable means areprovided whereby the relay will actual-e alarm circuit.: .As'illus` trated, the armature 17 of therelay pivote/d at leV closes the Contact v19 ofthe alarm circuit 20. The alarm circuitz'O-.prefembly ,the glass vessel 6... A loclcnut 12 secures the 'rod in itsadjustcd position anda square end contains v.the electromagnet Zlfofrelec'trol magnetic bellapparat'us`. The `arin'ati'ire 22," pulled by spring'23, againstA Contact 24, car# ries the hammer25, which'operatesin theVv usual manner' to ring the gong, 26. Suitable means are provided for energizing thealarm circuit, and I preferably 'utilize'the batteryj l5 common to all-the circuits, for this purl' pose.
In accordance VWithmy invention, I provide means for continuing the actuation of the alarm when the circuit` at the .circuit closer is opened. This'means may be widel? ico varied. In the best embodiment of the invention it includes means for locking the armature 17 in the position, which closes the alarm circuit. As illustrated, I make use of an electroma et 27 with coil 28, which acts as the loc ing electromagnetto leffect this result. In order to simplify the construction, I Wind the coil 28 on the same lmagnetic core'osoft iron on which is Wound coil l16. v This core may be straight or U shaped. It will be observed that when the relay. magnet 1G is energized, the armature 17 will be attracted, which will-also close the contact 29 of the locking circuit 30 containing the locking electromagnet 28. The contact 19 ofthe alarmv circuit will therefore remain closed' until the locking circuit isv opened, even though the circuit is opened'at the circuit closer 7, 8.
Suitable means are provided for opening `the locking circuit, which will stop the ringcarried on the door of the chest, as illus- Sii trated. lVhen the door is opened by unlocking the chest, the locking circuit and the bell circuit are opened, and the bell stops ringing.
In order to provide for carrying around the chest Without ringing the alarm, by tilting the chest and closing thecircuit at the circuit closer 7, 8,`I preferably arrange a circuit closing switch 34 in the circuit 14. This switch is located within the chest so that it can only be reached, after the door has been opened by the owner. The armature 17 may be blocked away from its circuit closing position, and effect the same resuit.
In order to further protect the contents of the. chest from unauthorized drilling, I make use of an auxiliary circuit closer located in the walls ofthejewel chest. As `ated upon the drawirigs, the auxiliary t closer operates in cooperation with circiu `the liquid circuit closer to protect the chest under all conditions. It consists if a pluralityv of conducting plates 35, 3G, 37, 38 separated by insulating material 39, 40, 41 and 42 between which plates the ribbed or corrugated sheet metal framework may be included. The plates 35, 38 and corrugated sheet metal 43 are preferably connected by a Wire to one terminal of the gravity operated circuit closer and the plates 30, 37 are preferably connected to t-hc other terminal of the circuit closer. When a metal drill is used to penetrate the walls of the chest, it will short-circuit the plates and actuate the alarm and locking relay in a manner that Will be well understood.
The operation of the invention will be clear from the preceding description of its construction. When the chest is tilted, the gravity operated circuit Acloser closes the circuit 14 momentarily, which throws in the alarm circuit, whichlatter is locked closed until the door is opened. The auxiliary circuit closer `will cause a continuous ringinp of the um if a, drm is. used to `bore through the. walls of. the chest.
Having thus described my invention, it Will be obvious that many` changes may be made in carrying it into effect without departing from the principle thereof. y
