Be it known that I, BUNNosUKn OMo'ro,

a citizen of the-United States, residing at Granger, in the county of Sweetwater and State of Wyoming, have invented new and' The primary object ofthis invention is' to provide abit of the class described which is provided with a removable curb member so arranged that a pull upon the rem or bridle connected with the bit will cause the curb member to press against the underside of the under jaw of the animal.,

Another object'of the invention is to provide the bit with arms lfor supporting the curb member which have openings arranged in their free ends to permit the removal or the insertionof the curb member as the occasion requires so that the bit may be used with or without the curb member, as desired.

A still further object of the invention is to provide the arms uponthe side bars of the bit with rectangular shaped openings, so that when the curb member has its reduced extension disposed in the said openings the curb member will be prevented from turning when in contact with the lower jaw of the animal in whose mouth the bit is positioned, one of said arms having a inger providing a passage for the reduced end of the curb member which is to be positioned in the opening in said arm.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a bit of this character having a curb member which is positioned eXteriorly of the horses mouth and normally is out of contact with the underside of the lower jaw of the animal so that the animal is not annoyed by the curb member attached to the bit.

' Vith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring now" to the drawing in detail the numeral 1 designates the mouthpiece of the bit which, has arranged at opposite ends thereof and extending above and below said mouth piece the usual side bars 2 the upper ends ofwhich are provided with eyes 3 for receiving straps ofthe head stall by means of which the bit is retained in the mouth of the animal while the lower 'ends of 'the side bars 2 are provided with theusual ring 4 to which the rein or bridle may be connected in the u'sual manner.

Extending rearwardly from the side `bars 2 between the mouth piece 1 and the rings 4 `are spaced parallel curb members supporting arms 5 each of which is provided near its free end with a. rectangular shaped opening 6. One of the arms' gradually decreases in thickness toward the opening 6 therein andA is provided at one end with a finger 7 having a portiontheieof bent to overlie in spaced relation the opening 6 in said arm and a portion of the arm adjacent said opening to provide an entrance to the opening indicated by the numeral 8.

A cross bar 9 is provided and'has its opposite ends reduced to rovide laterally eX-l tending tenons 10, said vtenons being rectangular in shape in cross section and adapted to be positioned within the openings 6 in the arms 5. A curved arm' 11 1s formed integral with the cross bar 9 between its ends and is provided upon its outer orifree end with an enlargement 12.

It will of course be understood that when it is desired to use the bit without the curb member the bit is positioned and retained in the animals mouth in the usual manner and that the arms in no Way interfere with the movement of the head of the animal.

When the bit is applied to an unruly animal and it is desired to apply the curb memi ber to the bit the same can be done by placing one of the tenons on the cross bar 9 in the opening 6 in one of the arms 5. The other tenon upon the cross bar 9 is now positioned'within `the entrance passage 8v to the opening 6 in the othery arm 5 and with thevcross bar 9 inthis position the remaining tenen can be passed into the remaining opening 6 in the bar 5 which gradually decreases in thickness toward th'e opening 6.

From the above statement it will be seen that the curb member can be applied tothe bit without the hands of the rider of the horse being' placed in such position as to enable the animal to bite and thus when the curb member has been applied to the bit the lower portion of the under jaw of the animal bearing upon the enlargement 12 will prevent casual displacement of the bar copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing; the

A bit having downwardly inclining arms 'upon the side bars below the mouth piece, each. having an opening inl one end, a cross bar provided with reduced portions for disposition within said openings, and an v arm formed integral with said bar between its ends and provided upon its free end with an enlarged portion.

3. A bit having a cross bar provided with reduced extensions at opposite ends rectangular in shape in cross section, a curved arm formed integral with said bar between said extensions, arms upon the side bars of the bit provided with openings for receiving said extensions, and a finger upon one of said bars overlying a portion of said arms to provide a passageway into said opening.
