Application filed December 6, 1915. Serial No. 65,240.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HARRIs, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn,'New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Filling Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to self-filling fountain pens and particularly to means for operating the self-filling device. 7
The object of my invention is to provide such means of a construction that will be at once simple, efficient and incapable of bringing about the operation of the self-filling device accidentally.
To accomplish this object, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrange ment and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts and in which- Figure 1 shows a top plan view of a fountain pen equipped with the novel device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a still more enlarged cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the bead or button in operative position; Fig. 4 is asimilar view as Fig. 3 showing the bead or button in inoperative position; F ig. 5 is an enlarged top plan view' of the holder or barrel with the sleeve and button removed and Fig. 6 is a cross section on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring specifically to the drawing a, denotes the holder or barrel of the fountain pen, 7; the rubber sack or ink reservoir and c the presser bar whereby the sack b is emptied of air and caused to subsequently suck in the ink. The barrel a is provided with a circumferential opening a through which the presser bar is manipulated. Thus far the construction is old.
According to my invention the presser bar 0 is provided with a hump or shoulder 0 which projects into the opening a. Extendingfrom the opening around a part of the circumference of the barrel a is a channel or groove 64 having a solid bottom a? which is level with the upper face of the hump or shoulder c. Owing to its engagement with the sleeve, the bead will be caused to slide within the groove when the sleeve is turned around the barrel, so that when it is desired to fill the pen the head can be brought into the range of the opening a and to rest on the shoulder c by turning the sleeve in'a certain direction. Thus one of the main advantages of my'construction isthat when the bead is in inoperative position it rests on the solid bottom a of the groove a and pressure exerted thereon accidentally will not affect the ink sack.
Another advantage afforded by my novel construction is that the hump or shoulder 0 adds a certain rigidity at the point of action to the flexible presser bar 0 and causes it, when the latter is depressed, to transmit a more or less uniform action on the entire length of the ink sack, the result of which is that a single stroke will suffice to completely fill the ink sack.
In order to prevent the sleeve from being accidentally turned around the barrel it is made to snugly lit the latter, so as to be securely held thereon by friction. But additional safety against displacement is offered by the friction between the bead. and the bottom of the groove. 7
Since the construction of my device can be easily modified without deviating from the principle of my invention, I do not wish to restrict-myself to the details described andshown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is '1. In a self-filling fountain pen, the'combination with the holder or barrelhaving a circumferential opening, an ink sack and a presser bar therein, of a sleeve rotatably mounted around said barrel and a member slidably borne on said barrel and engaged by said sleeve and adapted for the purpose of operation to be moved into the range of said opening and into engagement with the said presser bar.
2. In a self-filling fountain pen, the combination With an ink sack and a presser bar, of a barrel containing said ink sack and presser bar and having a circumferential opening and an annular groove extending from said opening, and a member slidably mounted in said groove and adapted to nor mally rest in said groove and for the purpose of operation to be moved into the range of said opening and into engagement with.

In a selffilling fountain pen, the combination with the ink sack, of a barrel con taining said ink sack and having a circumferential opening and an annular groove having a solid bottom and extending from said opening, a presser bar having a shoulder projecting into the said opening and a member movably mounted in said groove and adapted to normally rest on said bottom and for the purpose of operation to be moved into the range of said opening and into engagement with said shoulder.

In a self-filling fountain pen, the combination with the ink sack, of a barrel containing said ink sack and having a cireum ferential opening and an annular groove ex tending from said opening, a presser foot in said barrel having a shoulder projecting into said opening, a beadmovably mounted in said groove and capable of being brought to rest on said shoulder and means on said barrel for holding said bead on the latter and serving to move the same.
5. In a self-filling fountain pen, the combination with the ink sack, of a barrel containing said ink sack and having a circumextending from said opening, a presser bar in said barrel having a shoulder projecting into said opening, and the upper edge of which is level with the bottom of said groove, and a sleeve rotatively mounted on said barrel and having an opening engaging said bead, said sleeve holding said bead on the barrel and serving to move the same from said groove on to the said shoulder and vice versa.
