Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted June 20, 19-1(j Application filed Octob'erll, 191s. Serial No. 55,260.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PR'EsToN C. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Lifting Automobiles; andI do-hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the invention, such as will e'nableothers skilled in'the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
This invention relates to' new and useful improvements in apparatus for hoisting automobiles" off the floor to relieve the wheels of the weight of the car and com- 7 prises a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown-in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended. claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the lifting jack in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1, showing the device in elevated position.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A are beams combined so as to be-rendered extensible, being held in different adjusted positions through the medium of the plate D having apertures C therein through which bolts E pass. The beams A and A are held in clifferent vertical adjusted positions through the medium of the standards F, G and H, having apertures I therein for the reception of the bolts K which pass through registering apertures in oppositely disposed standards, said bolts being arranged in pairs, the lower ones designed to engage underneath the beams while the upper ones bear upon the surface of the beams. This construction is adapted for use in connection with automobiles of different kinds, the axles of which are different heights from the surfaces of the two beams A and A respectively and other links 0 are pivoted to the links N, the pivotal pinslQ which connect the links also passing through the adjustable strips Q which are provided with reg istering apertures Q for. the reception of bolts Cross-pieces, designated by letter Q, are interposed between the strips Q, and serve as means against which the toggle links 0 and are adapted to contact when thrown to vertical positions. Said strips Q are spaced apart sufficiently to allow the links to swing freely between the same and similar strips, designated by letter P, are plvoted to the upper portions of the links 0 through the medium of the bolts P and bolts P pass through registering apertures in overlapping portions of the strips P and serve as means for adjusting said strips longitudinally.
Rising from one end of the beam K are the standards R, spaced apart, and R and R? designate pivotal bolts which pass through registering apertures in said standards R. A link R is pivotally mounted upon the bolt R at one end and itsother end is pivotally connected to a bolt R which in turn is pivoted to the linksR which inturn are pivotally connected at their other ends upon a bolt- R passing through the strips Q. Links T are pivotally mounted upon the. pin R and their forward ends are pivota'lly connected to the pin P to which the upper end of one of said links 0 is pivoted. Bars, designated by letter S, are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the links H and B through the medium of the bolt R and their upper ends are pivotally connected to the bolt S which is carried by the shortend of the lever W. Said lever W is pivotally mounted upon a bolt X passing through registering apertures in the two standards R. A hooked bar V is pivotally mounted upon the bolt X and its hooked end, which is free, is adapted to engage over the upper edge of an axle of the vehicle to be raised by the apparatus.
The operation of my apparatus will be readily understood and is as follows :Af-
ter the height of the lifting device is adjusted to be adapted for a certain height of automobile, the lever W is swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, and which will cause the parts to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 and the apparatus is placed underneath the axles ofthe car,one upon either side, and the hooked end of the bar V engaged over the aXle of the vehicle to be raised, after which, by swinging down the long arm of the lever, the two sets of strips Q, and P will, through the toggle link connections, be thrown to the positions shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, thus raising the vehicle so that the weight of the same will be off the wheels. When the lever is thrown to its lowest position, the links R and R which form toggle connections between the standard R and the pivot R will tend to hold the links N and O in vertical alinement with each. other, thus serving as a means for holding the apparatus in its extended position, the link O resting upon the link N, as seen in Fig. 8. WVhen it is desired to lower the apparatus, the hooked bar V is first released from the axle and, by swinging the lever in the opposite direction, the parts will return to the position shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim to be new is 1. An apparatus for raising automobiles etc., consisting of adjustable beams and means for supporting the same, two sets of longitudinally extensible strips having toggle link connection, with said adjustable beams, a standard upon said beams, pivotal toggle link connections between said standard and one set of said strips, a lever pivotally mounted upon the standard and a pivotal connection between one end of said lever and the toggle links which connect the standard with said strips.
2. Anapparatus for raising automobiles etc., consisting of adjustable beams, supports for the same, two sets of longitudinally extensible strips having toggle link connection with said adjustable beams, a lever, means pivotally connecting one end of the lever with one set of said strips, a link connected with the other set of strips,
and a standard rising from said beams and to which said link is pivoted.
3. An apparatus for raising automobiles, etc., consisting of adjustable beams and means for supporting the same, two sets of longitudinally extensible strips having toggle link conncction, with said adjustable beams, a standard upon one of said beams, pivotal toggle link connections between said standard and one set of said strips, a lever pivotally mounted upon the standard, and bars pivotally connecting one end of the lever with the toggle links which connect the standard with said strips.
4. An apparatus for raising automobiles, etc., consisting of adjustable beams and ad-- justable supports therefor, two sets of lon gitudinally extensible strips having toggle link connection with said adjustable beams, a lever, a support therefor, and lever-actuated mechanism having toggle link connections with one set of said extensible strips, a fixed support, a link connecting one of said sets of strips with said fixed support, and means limiting the movement of said strips.
