Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,794, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAvIsoN, of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in lIIachinery for Manufacturing White Lead, of which the following is the specification:
The particular process to which this invention appertains is called washing white lead. My invention consists in arranging certain wellknown parts of machinery to tubs in such a manner that the process of washing white lead, which heretofore has been performed by hand labor, may be done by machinery. This process increases the density and makes a whiter and better article of white lead.
The most in'lportant feature of my invention, however, is the introduction of a stream or jet of water under pressure inside and near the bottom of the wash-tub in such a way as to sweep the bottom, in combination with a revolving toothed sweep, mounted to an upright shaft, and said shaft attached to suitable gearing.

D D are the wash-tubs, and n n are stepboxes attached to the bottom thereto. L L are upright shafts, resting in. said step-boxes a n, and H H are horizontal sweeps, firmly attached to shafts L L; said sweeps are provided with upright pins or teeth K K, said pins K K reaching down to the bottom of the tubs D D. 6 and 6 are gear-wh eels keyed fast to shafts L L at their upper ends; horizontal shaft G carries gearwhcels 5 5 working in wheels 6 6. 7 and 8 are clutches which throw wheels 5 5 in and out of gear by means of a catch-lever. M, on shaft G, is the driving-pulley. E is a small tub provided with pump 1) and pipe 61. c c are valves attached to the bottom of tubs D D, said valves are connected with pipes f f, said valves regulating the flow of lead. 0 c are pipes, and 1 l are st0pcocks thereon, said pipes c 0 connecting tubs B B and tub O. F is a pipe, and s s stop-cocks thereon; said pipe F is to convey water under pressure to the bottom of tubs D D. 9 is a spigot attached to pump a, and 10 is a spigot attached to the pump 1). The lower end of pipe 9 communicates with pump a and is set in the bottom of the tub O. The upper end is bent down in a semicircle and is made to turn around. The relative position of tub G and pipe 9 to tubs D and D is such that, when pipe 9 is turned either to the right or left, its opening or nozzle can be brought fairly over the wash-tubs D D to dis charge the lead. Pulleys 0 0 on shafts 2 and 3 receive motion from drum X on shaft G. h h are crank-plates on shafts 2 and 3, operating pumps a and I) by means of piston-rods m m. Pipe d is attached to tub E, in. connection with pump I), and is to convey the lead to drying-pans over head.
Put thesweeps in motion, then run the white lead through pipes c c, from the settling-tubs B B, into tub G, and by means of pump a it is forced through pipe 9 into one of the wash-tubs.
When a sufficient quantity of white lead has run into said wash-tub the nozzle of pipe 9 is brought over the other wash-tub and the lead run into it. W hen both or all the wash-tubs have thus been filled the sweeps are kept running, thoroughly stirring and agitating the mass. Simultaneously, while the white lead is stirred by the sweeps, a powerful stream or jet of water is introduced, entering the tubs near the bottom at It through pipe F. When stirred and washed enough, by repeated washing, the lead is allowed to subside and the water is drawn off. The valves 0 c are opened, the sweeps put in motion again, and the lead leaves through pipes f f into tub E and is pumped from there through pipe 01 into upper apartments, where it is rmi out into drying-pans heated by steam.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination and arrangement of waterpipe or pipes F and revolving sweep or sweeps H H, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with pipes F and sweeps H H, of shaft or shafts L L, gear-wheels 5 5 and 6 6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Forcing water, under pressure, into and through the white lead while in process of washing, for the purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
- 4.. Forcing water, under pressure, into and through the white lead while the same is stirred and raked up by sweeps H H, in combination and in connection with tub or tubs D I), sweep or sweeps H H, shaft or shafts L L, and gear-wheels 5 5 and 6 6, for the purpose herein fully set forth.
