This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in packing rings for pistons.
The invention is designed more particularly for use in connection with. pistons of explosive gas engines, although it will loe obvious from the consideration of 'the detailed .descriijition and drawings 'that it is equallyY applicable to other fornis of pistons and similar constructions where metallic packing is used. p
As is well known to those familiar with explosive and expansion engines, where a metallic packing ring is required, the piston is circuinrferentially grooved at one or incre points and a split packing ring fitted snugzjljfv within the groove. with its meeting ends suiiiciently separated to permit expansion of `the ring under heating. The opening, however, provides a path for the gases or duids from one side ot the piston to the other, which steadily increases with wear, thereby i'nateriallv lowering the eiliciencv of the engine and ultimatelyY requiring the repsiring of the piston. f

The outer sides of the tongues 4 bear against the outer walls of the notches 6 while the inner walls of the notches rest against the inner angularlv arranged sides of the tongues and hold the outer side of the coupler flush with the. outer side ot' the ring, the inner side of the coupler being then consequently held flush with the inner side of the ring owing to the fact that the coupler and ring are equa-lin thickness.

The ring' is assembled with the piston iii substantially the usual. manner, the bridge piece or coupler, however, being adjusted to the ends ofthe rings yafter it is slipped into the groove'provided for it in the piston.
lt will be seen that with4 a ring constructed in accordance with this invention, leakage directly past the opening or around the packing of the ring is prevented, and the coupler is maintained in proper Contact with the Wall of the cylinder by the pressure of the ring ends, and is therefore independent ofV the gas pressure within the cylinder.
Freni the foregoing description, taken in connection with thev accompanying draw ings, the advantages and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
It is also to be understood that the accompanying drawings merely illustrate one manner in which the invention may be constructed, and as various niinoi changes in form and .proportion may be resorted te without departing from the spirit et' the invention, I do not wish to liniit niyselt to the Construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim: l
1. A device' of the'class described coinprising a` split ring having spacedliigs extending ciicuinferentially from the ends thereof, V-shaped tongues disposed between `said lugs and extending circumferentially from the ends of said'ring, said tongues heing disposed adiacent the inner side et said ring and having their outer-sides arranged concentrieally relative to the outer side of the saine, the inner sides oi' said tongues being arranged angularly to the inner side of said ring, and a coupler received between .seid lugs and having its inner and outer Liezen sides flush with the inner and outer sides respectively oi' said ring, said coupler bci-iig; provided with il-shaped notches at its oppoSite ends for receiving,r said toiiigues, said notches being disposed adjacent the inner side ot' said coupler and inclined outwardly from their outer to their inner'ends.
2. A device of the class described coin prising a split ring having,- spaced lugs e tending r-.ii-cuiiiferentially from `the endsthereof, the outer sides of said lugs being ial'ibeted, tongues disposed between said lugs and extending circuniiiereutially 'from the ends et said ring, a coupler received between said lugs and provided with notches at its opposite ends for receiving said tongues', and wings extending laterally from the edges oi the intermediate iiiortion ot said coupler and along`the outer side thereof, said wings being seated on tlie ralibeted sides of said lugs.
