To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osErH Bozro, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in registers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with coin receptacles used in connection with pay-as-you-enter cars; and an object of the invention is a register including novel and improved means whereby the same is operated under the influence of a coin wherebyan accurate record may be kept relative to the aggregate of the coins.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and armore COI'IVBHIGIlt pass therethrough by rangement of the several parts of my 1mproved register whereby certain important advantages are attained. and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherand advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating a register constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section. illustrating a register constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a portion of a coin receptacle and C denotes a chute or conduit through which the coin or check passes, said chute being so disposed as to permit the coin to gravity. As the construction of the receptacle A forms no part of my invention. it is not thought that a detailed description or illustration thereof is necessary. Suitably supported within the to provide through the receptacle A is a register mechanism It preferably ofa structure similar to that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,141,309, issued June 1st, 1915, and including the lever 1 terminating in close proximity to the chute or conduit C and pivotally supported intermediate its length above the lever 1 is the arm 2, the opposite extremities of which being provided with the rotatably supported disks 3, the lower disk being adapted for contact with the upper face of the lever 1 while the upper disk is' normally projected within the conduit or chute C under the infiuence of the spring 4, said conduit being provided in its adjacent side wall with an opening 5 to permit the entry within the chute or conduit C of the upper roller 3 and the adjacent extremity of the arm 2, said spring also serving to maintain the lever I normally in operative position relative to the transfer mechanism T of the registerR... As herein embodied, the spring 4: is coiled and has one extremity suitably secured to the pivot a of the arm 2 and its opposite extremity to the lever 1 whereby the retractable influence of the spring serves to maintain the lever 1 and the arm 2 in operative adjustments. As the coin orcheck passes chute or conduit 0,, the upper end portion of the arm 2 is forced outwardly with a corresponding depression of the lever 1 with a resultant operation of the register R or more particularly the transfer mechanism T thereof, as it is to be observed that the upper roller 3 extends sufliciently within the chute or conduit C as to obstruct the path of travel of the coin or check. It is to be also observed that the upper roller 3 extends within the chute C a distance less than the space between the pivot a and the adjacent wall of the chute C so that the lever 2 will not be disposed past a vertical center when the 'upperroller 3 is forced outwardly under the influence of a coin or check. a

In Fig. 3 I have illustrated 'a. slightly modified form of my improveddevice which is substantially identical to the form hereinbefore set forth, except that the upper extremity of the arm 2 has operatively engaged therewith the endwise movable member 6 which partially intersects the chute or conduit 0' and has its freeextremity provided with the disk -7. As herein embodied, the upper extremity of the arm 2 is provided with a lateral extension 8 insertible within the slot 9 produced in the upper extremity of said arm 2*.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a register constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the scope 'of the appended claims and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in prac tice.

I claim:

In combination with a chute, a register including an operatinglever mounted for swinging movement, an arm mounted for rocking movement above the lever, said arm signature in the being pivotally supported intermediate its length and having one extremity slidably engaged with the operating lever and its 0 posite extremity partially intersecting tire chute immediately adjacent the entrance end of the chute, and a retractile spring interposed between the rock arm at its pivotal point and the operating lever of the register in advance of the contact between the rock arm and the lever for normally maintaining the rock arm partially intersecting the chute and for maintaining the operating lever normally in operative position, said arm being of a length tween the parallel planes occupied by the point of intersection between the arm and chute and occupied by the operating lever when in its normal position.
