Be it known that I, ARNOLD A. W'nronn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifriction-Bearings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anti-friction bearings and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more par ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is shown herein as applied for use in connection with a car side bearing and the many advantages thereof will appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawmgs :-F1gure 1 1s a view in side elevation of an antifriction bearing made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in a changed relation. Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of my improved antifriction bearing. Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view, the plane of the section being indicated by the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the truck bolster bearing plate and will be more particularly referred to later. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view through my improved anti-friction bearing, the plane of the section being indicated by the line (i 6 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to that embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings :-10 indicates the body bolster of a railway car and 11 indicates the truck bol ster thereof.
The antifriction hearing, as illustrated herein consists of a frame 12, which is attached to the truck bolster and which provides a support and bearing for a plurality of antifriction elements (in this case two), which are adapted for rotative movement about fixed axes.
The supporting frame 12, comprises a base plate 12 adapted for attachment to the truck bolster by means of bolts, 13, and upright parallel flanges forming longitudinally extending standards, 14 and 15, respectively, which are connected together at their middle by means of a transversely extending web, 16, said web acting as a brace between said Specification of Letters Patent.

17, 17 indicate transversely extending shafts which have non-rotative bearing in the standards, 14 and 15, respectively, and which are spaced a suitable longitudinal distance apart on each side of the transvers web 16, before mentioned. The said shafts or axles, 17, project at one end into recesses, 14, formed in annular bosses, 14 on the in nor face of the upright standard or support, 14. The opposite ends of said shafts are supported in apertures, formed in the upright standard or support, 15, and to provide a longer support for the associated ends of said shafts, annular bosses, 5 are provided on the inner face of said standards. The said shafts are held against rotation and endwise displacement in any convenient manner. Rotatively mounted upon each of said shafts are antifriction elements or rollers, 18, 18, each one of which is provided with a journal sleeve, 18, of antifriction metal, to reduce the friction caused by the rotation of said elements upon their associated shafts,the annular bosses, 14 15, respectively, being adapted to receive and resist the end thrust of said elements. In the vertical planes of the axes of said rollers, 18, provided bearing lugs or bumpers 19, which are formed integral with said upright standards, 1.4 and 15. The top of said bearing lugs or bumpers, 19, have short horizontal parts, 19, which are inclined downwardly toward their ends. Said short horizontal parts are on a level or are in the plane of the topmost peripheral part of said antifriction elements.

Said bearing member has secured to its bottom surface a wear plate, 21, providing a learing surface for the rollers and said plate is secured in place by the same bolts as are used to secure the bearing member, 20, to its associated bolster. The bearing member, 20, has longitudinal spaced bearing logs or bumpers, 22, (there being four of such lugs, see Fig. 5), which have short horizontal bearing surfaces, 22, located in the horizontal plane of the hearing surface of the wear plate, 21. The said lugs, 22, are adapted to coact and engage with the bearing lugs, 19, of the upright members, 14 and 15, when the body and truck bolsters are substantially in the same plane, as will occur when the car is going along a straight track, but become inoperative in the transmission of load as soon as the bolsters oscillate beyond the said position, when the rollers or antifriction elements will take the load in the usual manner.
The operation of the antifriction bearing is as follows: When the body and truck bolsters are in line, as when the car is on a straight track, there is little or no horizontal oscillation therebetween. -A little rocking or vertical oscillation occurs between the body and truck bolsters, which in prior constructions, produced a useless pounding on the antifriction elements, which pounding often resulted in damage to said elements. This pounding on the antifriction elements is entirely done away with in my improved bearing, for the reason thatsuch pounding, due to the rocking movement before described, is transmitted from fixed bearing lugs on the body bolster to the bearing lugs on the truck bolster and theshock or jar thereof is taken upby said lugs just as the wear plate, 21, engages the antifriction elements. When a horizontal oscillation occurs between the body and truck bolsters, the,
antifriction elements are ready to receive the load transmitted and turn upon their fixed axles, as is apparent.
Owing to thefact that the friction lugs or bumpers on both bolster members are in engagement with each other and the antifrictionr elements are in engagement with the associated wear plate,'no raising or lowering movement is imparted to the body bolsterwhen a horizontal oscillation occurs between the body and truck bolsters, as the antifrictionelements are in engagement with the wear plate at all times.
I claim as my invention 1. An anti-friction bearing comprising, in combination with oscillating members be tween which the bearing is interposed, a bracket member fixed to one of said oscillating members, said bracket member having bearing arms, a shaft mounted in said bearing arms, a rotative anti-friction element journaled on said shaft, a bearing member 'fixed to the other oscillating memher and fixed friction bearing lugs carried by said bracket member and by said bearing block member, located in the vertical plane of the axis of the antifriction element when the .said oscillating members are in their normal position, said friction bearing lugs and said anti-friction element all providing the bearing between said oscillating members when in their normal positions.

3. An anti-friction bearing comprising, in combination with oscillating members between which the bearing is interposed, a bracket member fixed to one of said oscillating members, said bracket member having bearing arms, a shaft mounted in said bear ing arms, a rotative anti'friction element journaled on said shaft, and a bearing member fixed to the other oscillating member, said bracket member being provided with friction lugs at each side of the antifrictiou element and said bearing block bein'g provided with like friction bearing lugs adapted for engagement with the first named bearing lugs, said bearing lugs and said anti-friction element all providing the bearing between the said oscillating members when they are in their normal positions.
