GAS-GOVERNOR.
Application filed September 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. SMYLY,
a citizen of the United States of America,
and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Governors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a gas regulator of that kind in which a diaphragm is employed for automatically controlling the valve which governs the fiow of gas.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel construction and arrangement whereby the valve mechanism. is removable as a unit, by unscrewing a plug, and without disturbing the diaphragm.
It is also an object to provide a novel arrangement involving the provision of a trap in the top of the casing of the governor, connected with the blow-oil pipe, and forming, with the inlet and outlet connections, a T-coupling at one end of the governor, said blow-off pipe being connected by a passage in the top of the casing with the space above the diaphragm.
Another object is to provide a novel form of safety valve, forming a part of the general structure of the governor, and preferably incorporated in a removable plugv to which also carries the regulating valve.
To these and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a gas regulator or governor embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 in Fig. 1. As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a casing A having a cover B, the diaphragm C being clamped between them. The spring 0 bears on the top of the diaphragm, and is regulated by the screw 0 whereby the gas is controlled in a manner hereafter described. The bottom of the diaphragm has a bracket c of any suitable form.
The cover B, has a trap Z) at one end thereof, connecting through an opening a in the diaphragm with the gas chamber a, and connected with the upwardly extending blow-off pipe 5 A breathing passage 6 01f pipe with the space above the diaphragm, to permit free rise and fall of the latter.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.plied to the upper in the top of the cover, connects the blow- Patented June 2Q, 1916. Serial No. 790,494.
A plug D is screwed into the bottom of the casing, and is connected with the inlet pipe (Z, which latter is in alinement with the pipe Z2 The plug has an inlet passage 65 with a horizontal upper portion terminatmg in the valve seat CF. The valve (Z3 is fixed on the lower end of the depending arm (5*, which latter is pivoted at cl on the upper end of the plug. A lever E is pivoted at e on the bottom of the casing, and has its other end pivoted at e to the lower end of the bracket 0 A cam e is fixed on said. lever, forming a short arm therefor, and engages the arm (Z of the valve. When the diaphragm moves upward the valve 65 engages the seat (Z and closes the inlet. The plug D and valve (Z are removable downwardly together.
A safety valve F is inclosed within the plug D, being in the form of an inverted cup with three holes f in the sides thereof, and having a cone-shaped upper portion 7 for closing the lower end of the passage al in case the flow increases to a dangerous degree. Said cup is supported at its lower edge by a plug screwed into the base of the plug D, and having openings f for the passage of the gas. Posts 7 are disposed upright on said plug f forming guides for the cup F, whereby the latter moves up and down in a straight line. A central post f moves up and down in the plug f and is held normally down by a solder cross pin f in the lower end thereof. A spring f is apportion of the post 7 and serves to lift the latter, when the pin 7 melts, in case of fire. Thus the spring 7 causes the post 7 to raise the valve F to close the inlet. This, of course, only happens when the governor is subjected to heat sufficient to melt the solder pin.
A-s creen G is interposed between the bottom of the plug f and a shoulder g on the coupling 9 This filters the gas before it reaches the safety valve.
Thus it will be seen that the outlet pipe H at the end of the casing forms, with the pipes b and (Z, a T-connection atone end of the governor. In this way the connections are grouped in convenient form. By removing the diaphragm, the valve 03 is rendered accessible without disturbing the inlet and outlet connection. The trap 5 is also removable without disturbing the inlet and outlet pipes.
In the foregoing construction, it will be 6 tive movement between the said valve memher and said lever about a stationary axls. Furthermore, the said valve member is not mounted on the said lever, but is supported independently thereof, although associated 1o therewithin any suitable and desired man ner. Y
