Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED WHITNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRANK. L. PENNEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICINES FOR TREATING RHEUMATISM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,766, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED WHITNEY, of Boston, in the county of Sufi'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Medicine and Liniment for the Cure of Rheumatism; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The first part of my invention consists in a medicine to be taken internally for the cure of rheumatism. The second part of my invention consists in a liniment to be applied externally and used with or without the internal medicine.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
The medicine is composed of the following ingredients, in about the proportions specified, viz: Iodide potassium, one ounce; bicarbonate of potassa, one-half ounce; wine of colchicum-root, one-half ounce; tincture of gentian, (compound,) sixteen ounces; essence of checkerberry, one-half ounce.
The above-named ingredients are to be all thoroughly mixed together, when the medicine is ready for use; and about one tea-spoonful should be taken three times a day; but this quantity and the times of taking may be varied according to circumstances.
The above-described medicine is extremely efficacious for curing rheun'iatism, as it cleanses the blood and drives the disease out of the system.
The liniment to be used in connection with the above-described medicine is composed of the following ingredients, in about the proportions named, viz: Ammonia, (liniment,) two and onehalf ounces; tincture of laudanum, onehali ounce; tincture of cayenne, one-half ounce chloroform one ounce; tincture of arnica, onehalf ounce.
These ingredients are to be thoroughly incorporated together, when the liniment is ready for immediate use.
The liniment is to be applied externally, and serves to reduce the swelling and inflammation produced by rheumatism, and relieves the pain. I therefore prefer to use it in connection with the medicine; but its use may be dispensed with and the medicine only be taken, if desired.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within-described medicine, composed of the ingredients herein named, in about the proportions and for the purpose set forth.
2. The within-described liniment, composed of the ingredients herein named, in about the proportions and for the purpose described.
Witness my hand this 2d day of August, A.
