Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 3, 1915. vSerial No. 18,9341.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l[, LAWRENCE L. LANDERS, a citizen of the United States lof America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, lowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Devices for Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in protective devices for door-locks, and the object ofy my improvement is to supply means for preventing the intrusion of a tool or other body between the edge of a locked door and its jamb, at the location where the door-bolt enters a socket catch on the j amb, so that the bolt cannot be manipulated by the tool to permit of an opening of the door when locked. Thisl object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a part of the face of a door jamb, containing a socketcatch, and showing my improved protective device mounted thereon adjacent to said catch. Fig. 2 is an elevation of said protective device, taken at an angle of degrees from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said protective device. Fig. t is a horizontal ysection of said door-jamb and its said socketjcatch, as also of said protective device mounted thereon, and of part of a door closed thereagainst, with a lock in said door having its bolt seated in said catch.l
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
VThe numeral 7 denotes the face-plate of a door-jamb having a strip of molding 6 secured longitudinally thereon by means of screws 8, or other securing-means, said molding forming the usualabutment for the ver tical edge of a door 12 when closed thereagainst. Said jamb has a socket adapted to receive a socket-catch 9 for the bolt 11 of a lock 13 mounted in said door. It willl be noted that with this type of door and lock mounting, there is always an interspace 10 between the jamb 7 and said abutment-molding 6 as well as between the abutting faces of the socket-catch 9 and the lock 13 at the location where said bolt 11 enters said socket-catch. Unless suitably interrupted, said interspace 10 permits the intrusion of a thin bladed knife or other similar body between said lock and said socket-catch to push in said bolt 11, when the door is locked,
whereby the door may be opened. To prevent this, I have provided a closure for said interspace opposite said coactingbolt and catch.v rllhis consists of an oblong flat plate or strip l of metal, or other suitable substance, seated in a shallow recess in the abutment edge of the molding 6 to be flush therewith, and having a pair of spaced angularly-directed ears 3 secured to the face of the j amb 7 above and below the socket-catch 9, by means of screws 5 passedy through reamed openings 4 inthe ears. The middle part of the plate 1, between said ears, is wider in order to supply a projecting portion 2 which is inserted into a longitudinal groove in said j amb, so that the part 2 will cross and interrupt the interspace 10 adjacent to the catch 9.
Referring to said Fig. 4, it will be seen that when the door is closed, and the lockbolt 11 engaged withinthe socket-catch 9, the plate 1 completely interrupts the interspace 10 of said parts so that a knife blade cannot bepplaced between the jamb and the molding 6 to push in said bolt.
When desired, the body 1-2 may be reversed to have its ears 3 underlie the molding or stop 6, and screws may be passed through holes vmade in said body into the molding. The body thus fastens down the molding to the jamb opposite 'the catch 9, and renders the forcing of the lock doubly difficult. A
Modifications may be made in the dimensions, form, and arrangement of said device, for the purpose mentioned, without departing from the protection or scope of the principles of this invention.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A protective device for a door-lock, comprising in combination with a door-jamb having a medially longitudinally arranged projecting stop-strip mounted thereon, the jamb having a socket on one side of said stop-strip, and a door swingingly mounted, provided with a lock having a bolt protrusible into said socket when the door is closed against the stop-strip, the bolt end being beveled on the side facing said strip, the stop-strip having a shallow recess opposite Mtl.
said socket, of a plate seated in said recess at an angle to the jamb and having ears xedly secured to the jamb, the jamb having a shallow recess in the plane of the plate,
and the plate having' a longitudinal edgepart between said .ears {ittingly extended into said recess and adapted to interrupt the crevice between said stop-strip and jamb op-
