To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, ASIIELEIGII S. Moses, a citizen of the United States, and residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improve-` ments in lnking Mechanisms for Rotary Multicolor-Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to multi-color printing presses and more particularly to printing presses adapted to print in different colors on cylindrical articles such as buckets and the like.y

One of the objectsy of this invention is to construct inlring mechanism which is adapted to apply ink of different colors to the printing mechanism.
Another object is to provide novel inking mechanism which is simple in construction, capable of adjustment, accessible, and which will distribute and apply the ink uniformly.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings 10 designates a base plate'forsupporting the bearings, brackets, etc.' A main drive shaft 11 issupported in bearings l2 and 13 on the base plate and projects beyond the same. A platen ormandrel 14 is mounted upon and keyed tothe projecting end of the shaft and this mandrel isof ta pered constructiony as shown. A sleeve 15, surrounds the shaft 11 and this sleeve has keyed thereto a drivingrpulley l16. a treadle operated clutch shifting rod 19. r1`his clutch may be of any suitable construction but is preferably of the single revolution type, that is, so constructed that the shaft will upon depression of the treadle make a single revolution and then come to a stop in a predetermined position. Clutches of this type are however well known commercial devices and a. detail description therefore unnecessary.
A pair of shafts 2O are mounted in brackets 2l and 22 adjustably mounted on the base plate by means of screws 23 passing through slots in the brackets and tapped into the Vbase plate. Adjusting screws 2-1 mounted in lugs'Q- on the base plate and engaging the brackets are provided for ad justing the brackets and the shafts laterally on the base plate. Each of the shafts 20 is provided with a reduced portion 2G adapted toreceive a printing cylinder 27 of segmental form which is clamped in position on the shaft by means of a nut 28. Each of these cylinders is provided with a printing surface or form 29 of rubber or other suitable material and having printing characters thereon. The shafts 20 are driven from the main drive shaft 11 by means of gears 80 keyed to the shafts 2O and meshing with a gein' 81 keyed to the shaft 11. l/Vhere the mandrel is of tapered construction the gears 30 and 31 are bevel gears.V 1n orderto, brake the machine each ofthe yshafts 20'is provided with a friction drum 32 engaged yby a kfriction brake 33. ' means of this construction the blocks 43 can are retained in position by means of'latches 48 pivoted on screws 49 tapped linto the lugs ,47 and having lugs 50 thereon adapted to engage the ends of the shafts of the rolls 42.
' `When the latches are thrown up out of latching position the inking rolls can be readily removed, while when these latches are in position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 they retain the rolls inposition and against removal at the` same time permitting adjustment of the blocks 43 and the rolls carried thereby. Y The connection between` the blocks and the-*screws Y46 permits these blocks to be removed and'replaced. The lug 50 when in position engages the' side of the block Y43 while the latch body engages the front of the block to retain it in position. VAfter the latch is in position it may be clamped by its screw 49.
A pair of plates 51 are secured to the side members 41 by means of screws 52 and these plates sup-port the shaft 53 of a brass distributing roll 54. The shaft V53 carries a cam head 55 sliding and rotating in a bearing bracket 56 and having a cam groove 57 f engaged by the end of the pin 58 threaded into the bracket. The shafts 53 have each a pulley V59 driven'by belts 60 from a pulley 61keyed to the sleeve 15. Guide pulleys 62 are also provided for the belts to sustain them laterally. By means of this construction the shafts 53 are rotated and given an endwise movement while rotating, and in view of the fact that these shafts are driven from the continuously rotating sleeveV 15, the distributing rolls 54 are continuously rotated and reciprocated laterally. j Y
A composition ink receiving roll 63 mounted in stirrups 64 on the side members 41 engages with the .distributing roll 54. VA brass supply roll 65 is 'mounted between side members 66 kpivroted atV 67 on a block '68 mounted on the head 40. The block 68 is i formed and beveledas shown at 69 so as to form withthe side members 66 and the roll 65 an ink fountain. The springs 79 hold the roll in adjusted'position. A composition transfer roll 80 is Vremovably mounted in the ends of armsV 8l rigidly connected to the shaftr76. since the movement takes place through the spring 82 the engagement between the rolls 8,0 and65 will be a yielding one. During the return or downward movement ofthe cross head the arm`72 and the` clutch connection between this arm'and the roll 65 will cause this roll tobe moved in the direction of the arrow Fig. 7 to present the inked portion of the roll to the transfer roll 80. YThe i., transfer roll 80 moves into engagement withV the supply roll 65 while the latter is rotating, and in view of the vfact that theY yield-V ing connection between the bell crank 75 and the shaft 76 causes the rolls 80 and 65 to :be in engagement for some time while theroll 65 is still moving in the direction of the arrow Fig. 7, theink will bei transferred from the roll 65 to the roll 80. the ink to the printing cylinders as they rotate thereunder. It will be understood that the fountains of the tivo printing mechanisms are supplied with different colored inks, so as to apply ink of one color to one printing cylinder and ink of another color to the other printing cylinder.
Fig. 10 shows aprinted bucket. The letters have a body of one color and a border of anothercolor. In the operation of the machine, as described in the original application referred to, the body of these letters will be printed by one printing cylinder while the border will be printed by the other printing cylinder'.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit of this invention and it is therefore to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.l
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a printing press, inliing mechanism con'iprsing a support, a roll, a. block carrying said roll, and a. device detachably conneoted to the block and adapted to suspend the latter adjustably from said support, the connection between said device and block being constructed to permit lateral removal of said block With said roll from said support.
2. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a. support, a roll, a block carrying said roll and provided with a dove tailed slot, and a screw having its head fitted in said slot and arranged to suspend said block adjustably from said support While permitting removal of the block laterally away from the support.
3. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a support, a roll, a block carrying said roll, means for mounting said block for vertical and lateral movements on said support, and means for adjusting said block vertically, constructed to permit lateral removal of said block and said roll from said support.
4. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a support, a roll, a block carrying said roll, means for mounting said block for vertical and lateral movements on said support, means for adjusting said block vertically, constructed to permit lateral removal of said block and said roll from said support, and a latch for retaining said block in operative position.
5. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising` a support, a roll having a shaft and removably arranged on said support, and latches mounted on said support for movement parallel to said shaft and having lugs adapted to engage said shaft and retain said roll in position.
6.k In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a support, a roll, blocks for said roll arranged on said support, for vertical adjustment thereon and transverse removal therefrom, and latches on said support adapted to engage and retain said blocks in position.
7.. In a printing press, inking mechanism Comprising a support, a roll having a shaft, blocks having recesses for removably supporting said shaft, said blocks being removably arranged on said support, and latches mounted on said support and acting to retain said blocks in place, said latches having lugs adapted to engage said shaft and hold the same in said recesses.
8. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a' beveled block, a pair of arms mounted on opposite sides of and engaging said block, and a roll carried by said arms and arranged adjacent said block, said parts forming together an ink fountain.
9. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a block, a pair of arms mounted on opposite sides of and engaging said block, a roll carried by said arms and arranged adjacent said block, said parts forming together an ink fountain, and means for adjusting said arms and said roll With respect to said block.
10. In a printing press, inking mechanism comprising a block, a. pair of arms mounted on opposite sides of and engaging said block, a roll carried by said arms and arranged adjacent said block, said parts forming together an inlrfountain, means for adjusting said arms and roll with respect to said block, and means for rotating said roll.
