Y POWER-TRANSMISSION DEVICE.
Application filed July 8, 1915.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Im-,
provements in POWQT-TI'aDSmlSSiOD Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to power transmis sion devices and particularly to mechanism in which movements in the same direction are imparted intermittently to a driven member from an operating device which moves alternately in opposite directions.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which shall be positive and uniform as well as substantially noiseless in its action and shall operate with but little wear in the connection between the driving and the driven members.
To this end an important feature of the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of mechanism including positive means for effecting alternately engagement and disengagement between the driven member and the operating device to cause said device to be retracted in its idle movement while out of engagement with the driven member. The construction selected for purposes of illustration comprises pawl and ratchet mechanism including means for moving the pawl positively into and out of engagement with the ratchet member. This construction avoids the wear upon the pawl and the ratchet teeth which would be caused by engagement of the pawl with the teeth during the retracting movement of the pawl, as well as the noise which would be incident to such movement of the pawl over the teeth. The pawl, moreover, is so arranged relatively to the operating means and the ratchet member that the tendency of the operating means is to maintain the pawl in effective engagement with the ratchet member during the forward movement and this tendency is increased by resistance to the movement of said member, and this arrangement constitutes a further important feature of the invention.
The above and other features of the in- Specification of Letters Patent.

structed and arranged for driving the stock feeding rolls of a heel lift cutting machine such as forms the subject matter of my copending application Serial N 0. 13,67 3, filed March 11, 1915. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not restricted in its application to machines of this type nor in its broader aspects to the illustrated constructional details.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a portion of a cutting machine suclras that shown in the above mentioned apphcation, including mechanism in which the present invention is embodied; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation and partly in sectionof a portion of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows in elevation and partly in section a portion of the mechanism as viewed from the left with reference to Fig. 2.
A portion of the machine frame is seen at 2, and mounted on the frame is a bracket a which has supporting means for a pair of inter-meshing pinions 6 and 8 from which movement is imparted'to the feed rolls of the machine through connections not shown herein but illustrated in the co-pending application above mentioned. The pinion 6 is driven from the pinion 8 and the latter pinion is driven by a gear wheel 10 mounted loosely upon a shaft 12 which is supported by the bracket 1. The gear 10 is driven by pawl and ratchet mechanism which includes a'ratchet wheel 14% mounted loosely upon a hub 16 formed on said gear. The gear wheel and the ratchet wheel are provided in their adjacent faces with recesses in which are positioned balls 18, these balls operating normally to lock the wheels together so that movement is imparted to the gear wheel from the ratchet wheel. The gear wheel 10 is arranged to move also lengthwise upon the shaft 12 against the tension of a spring 20 to permit the balls 18 to move out of looking relation to the ratchet wheel 14: when the operation of the feed rolls is for any reason prevented, the ratchet wheel being restricted from similar movement in the opposite direction by engagement with the side of the bracket L The'device for driving the ratchet wheel 14 comprises a pawl carrier 22 mounted to oscillate upon the shaft 12, and pivoted to this carrierby means of a stud shaft 2% is a pawl which comprises an arm 26 and a member 28 formed, in the. construction shown, with a plurality of teeth for engagement with the teeth of the ratchetwheel, this member being mounted upon a stud 80 secured to the arm 26 and having a pin 32 to position it in fixed relation to the arm. The pawlis thus permitted to rock or swing relatively to the carrier 22 about the axis 2% into and out of engagement with the teeth of the wheel 1 1. The pawl andits carrier are operated to impart movement to the ratchet wheel through connections including a link or pitman 34: pivoted on the stud 30 and driven by suitable means not herein shown in detail.
, The pawl carrier 22, upon the opposite side of the shaft 12 from its connection with the pawl, is provided with a socket 36 in which is mounted a plunger 38 in position to bear frictionally upon the. side of the bracket 4. The plunger is maintained in engagement with the bracket by means of a spring 40 the tension of which may be adjusted by means of a screw 42.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that movement of the pawl about the axis 24L in the direction to cause it to disengage the teeth of the wheel 1a is limited by engagement of a projection 44: on the arm 26 with a shoulder 46 on the carrier 22, while its movement in the opposite direction about the axis 2% is limited by its engagementwith the wheel; By reason of this arrangement, and the friction of the plunger 38 uponthe bracket 4 which tends to'retard the movement of the carrier 22, the effect of reciprocation of the pitman 34 is first to rock the pawl about its axis 24- to cause it to engage that by reason of the arrangement of the axis 24 of the pawl relatively to the wheelie and the pitman 34, the pitman not only imparts to the pawl its forward or'operative movement but tends to maintain the pawl in engagementwith the wheel during such The pawl is thus or ratchet wheel in the claims it is not applicants intention, except as required'by the context, to limit the claims to devices having details of construction such as shown, but to comprehend a broad range of equivalent constructions adapted to perform the required functions.
Having described the invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the class described comprising, in combination, a ratchet member, a pawl carrier and'a pawl thereon for imparting movement to said member, said pawl being arranged for limited movement relatively to the carrier to engage or disengage the ratchet member, and means for imparting movement to said member, said pawl being arranged for limited movement relatively to the carrier to engage or disengage the ratchet member, operatmg means for the pawlcarrier connected to the pawl to cause it to move theIpawl relatlvely to the carrier into or out of engagement with the ratchet member prior'to movement of the carrier, andmeans for retarding movement.
