Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HARWOOD AND F. LE GRAND AMES, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDERS l-OR GRINDING SCISSORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,717, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that we, JOHN HARWOOD and F. LE GRAND Aivres, both of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain lmproved Holder and Guide for Sharpening Scissors, of which the following is a specification The principal part of our invention relates to the construction of a lever-jaw or holder operated by a thumb-screw, and combining the same with a guideroller in such a manner as to form a new and useful device, by means of which scissors or shears or other similar articles may be ground or sharpened with ease and accuracy by any one not conversant with such work.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a central vertical plane. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the mode of using our invention.
A is a bed-plate of metal, of about two inches square. At one end of said bed-plate A are two upwardly-projectin g side pieces, a a. At the same end of bed-plate A as side pieces a a is a roller, B, revolving upon pivots in the usual manner, the length of roller B being nearly equal to the distance between side pieces a a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The diameter of roller B for a bed-plate of the size hereinbefore given may be about three-quarters of an inch. On the front end of bed-plate A a downward projection, G, is cast, its length being equal to the width of bedplate A and its downward projection below the under surface of bed-plate A being about half an inch, as may be seen on reference to Figs. 1, 2, and 3. ()n the upper side of bed-plate A a lug, c, is cast, and a thumb-screw, d, is fitted into lug 0 in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Projection 0 forms one side of the jaw or holder. Another jaw, D, made of similar shape and size to jaw (l, is provided, only jaw D is independent and detachable from the bed-plate A,
as shown in Fig. 1. The lug f of jaw D passes through a small opening made in bed-plate A, as shown at g, in Fig. 2.
By the construction of loose jawD with a central lug or lever, f, we obtain a greatly-increased power, so that by turning thumb-screw (l we can easily hold scissors or shears firmly between jaws G and D.
It will be seen from the above that the manner of using our invention will be as follows: The scissors or shears to be ground will be screwed fast between jaws O and D in the position shown in Fig. 3, the cutting-edge of the blade to be ground being placed downward and parallel to the bottom of roller B, which may be quickly and easily done by holding the device on a table or a piece of glass or upon any level surface while turning the thumb-screw d, so as to hold the blade between jaws O andD; then by holding the de vice upon a grindstone, in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4., so that guide-roller B may lie upon and revolve with the grindstone E, the edge m of the scissors or shears will be ground to an accurate bevel, forming a good cutting-edge or angle, as may be seen on reference to Fig. 2. Should the blade of the scissors be longer than the width of the grindstone, we first grind one portion of the blade, then loosen jaw D by unscrewing thumb-screw d, move the blade, readjust as before, and grind the remaining portion of the blade.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement and combination of lever-j aw D with stationary jaw O and thumb-screw (I, so
as to form an improved scissors-holder and guide with roller B, as herein set forth.
' JOHN HARVVOOD.
F. LE GRAND AMES. Witnesses:
CHARLES T. ARMATAGE, ISAIAH W. STEARNS.
