.flash from a percussionothers, consists in the insertion of a small cone, 1, of paper or similar substance, in the U TATES PATENT OFFICE,
DANIEL MOORE, OF WVILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT Specification forming part of Letters Patent To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MOORE, of VVilliamsburg, in the county of Kings and S tate of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in Cartridges for Use with Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the and'exaet description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a section of the cartridge, and Fig. 2 is a back elevation of the same.
The like marks of reference denote the same I The nature of my said invention consists in' a peculiar conical form given to the base of the cartridge, so as to pass the detonation or cap. In all other breech-loading cartridges with which I am acquainted, gauze paper or other fibrous sub stance is inserted at the rear end of the car tridge to keep the powder from running out of the hole that isleft for the passage of the flame; consequently said material, being at right angles to the direction of the detonation, has to be burned through or torn by the said flame or detonation.
My invention, as distinguished from all rear end of the paper or other case 2 containing the powder, and attached to a ball, 3, or containing shot.
The apex of the cone being inward, forms a resemblance to a funnel, and after the can IN CARTRIDGES FOR BREECI-I-LOADING- FIRE-ARMS.
No. 11,870, dated October 31, 1854.
tridge is filled with powder a pin or other sharp point is used to pierce through the apex of the cone, but only a small hole is required, (and with some kinds of paper none at all,) so that the grains of powder will not pass out.
The operation of this conical base is that the flash from a cap'is concentrated at the apex, for, should the flash not be entirely central, it will strike on an inclined plane, and, when it reaches the apex,
cannot go in any other direction, but bursts through the paper or enlarges the pin-hole and passes directly into the powder.
Many breech-loading. cartridges miss fire from thehole in the breech not coinciding with the opening in the cartridge, but this cannot occur with mine; and it will be evident that the conical base in my cartridge will, even with very thin paper, keep its shape but should it give down, the very operation .of forcing the cartridge in with the finger opens the same again, and no powder can escape until the base or sides are torn by violent usage. What I desire to 1s- The cone 1, of paper or other suitable substance, attached to and entering 'the rear end of the breech-loading eartridge,to concentrate and pass the flash frolna detonating-cap, substantially as specified.
In witness whereof I signature this 19th day secure by Letters Patent have hereunto set my of September, 1854;
. DANIEL MOORE.
Witnesses! LEMUEL W. SERRELL, THOMAS G. HAROLD.-
