MOLDING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 17, 1912. Serial No. 671,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL A. LAWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Prairie, in the county of Todd and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements for making cement brick, floor tiling, etc., its object being particularly to provide an improved form of machine which can be easily and quickly changed to molddiiferent articles as brick, floor tile, shingles, etc, and by which the article being molded may be handled in the most convenient and effective manner.
To this end the invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. a

Referring to the drawings A represents the framework of the machine. Carried by the machine are the horizontal guides 2 with which a delivery hopper frame 3 slidably cooperates through the medium of cars 4: overlapping the guides. The rear half of said delivery hopper framework is formed with a solid top and thefront end of the bed plate with a vertical opening constituting a'delivery hopper 5. Fixedly supported above the delivery hopper is a supply hopper 6, the supply hopper being secured between the upper ends of arms 7 said arms being supported at their lower. ends as by bolts 8 upon the framework. The delivery hopper is reciprocated through the medium of the lever arms 9, said lever arms at their lower ends being journaled upon a transverse bar 10 supported by the framework and at their upper ends having slot and pin connection 11 with the delivery hopper framework. A suitable handle 12 is arranged in connection with the upper ends of the lever arms 9. Thus by turning the lever arms 9 through the medium of the handle 12 the delivery hopper will be horizontally reciprocated upon the guides 2 for the purpose hereinafter particularly pointed out. crum support 13 upon the supply hopper supporting bars 7 are the arms 14, said arms at their lower ends having coil spring connection 15 with the transverse bar 10 and at their upper ends being connected by the handle bar '16. Fixedly supported between the lever arms 14 above the supply hopper, through the medium of the transverse rod 17 and thebrace arms 18, is a plurality of suit ably shaped tampers 19. As will be evident by removing the nuts 20 the tamps may be removed and replaced by substitute tampers.
For forming and removing the bricks or other articles being molded by the machine I employ the following mechanism: Having hinge support 21 upon the front of themachine is a cross plate 22 constituting the front side of the mold, said plate being formed with rearwardly extending side arms 28 and withupwardly extending end brackets'24l forming rests for'the pallet boards, as hereinafter set forth. The rear side of the mold is formed by a transverse plate 25, said plate being formed with inwardly extending slots 26 through which extend bolts 27 carried by the framework to allow said plate being adjusted forwardly or rearwardly of the machine to adjust the size of the mold. The plate 25 is formed with a forwardly extending bottom wing 28 to form a rest for the bottom mold board. The end. of the mold is constituted by the side plates 29 of the framework. 30 indicates a removable bottom plate for the mold,'said plate being formed with a plurality of rearwardly extending separated sections 31 constituting the bottom molds for the individual bricks or other articles being molded. The forwardly extending top of the angle shaped front of the mold support is formed with downwardly extending lips 32 to fit over the hinged front plate 22 of the mold. Normally separating the segments of the bottom plate of the mold is a movable division frame 33 shown in detail in Fig. 9, said frame being formed With a plurality of forwardly extending interspaced vertical walls 34 designed to stand in the mold between the sections of the bottom plate. Said division frame, as shown, is formed with a rear wardly extending flange 35 adapted to ex- 1 tend over'the plate carried by the frame- -work, said flange being formed with downwardly extending lips 37 to fit over said cross bar.' wardly the filling hopper'5 will be brought over the molds to fill the same, the tampers then beingturned down to tamping'position inthe mold through the medium of the handle 16. Anordinary pallet board will then be placed upon the molds and the bot tommold-board turnedupside down through themedium of the {arms 23 to deposit 'the brick'orother articles in delivery position .upon the board. After the articles have been released from the mold the mold will be turned baekinto normal position, when one move ofuthe lever arms 11 will again place the delivery hopper over the mold, filling the molds ready for tamping. By having the mold, bottoms and division partitions removable, as shown, so as to be interchangeable, the apparatus can in a few seconds he changed from a brick molding machlne to a machine for molding floor tile,'shingles, etc.

As has been pointed out, the tampers are removably supported between the arms 18'so as to be easily removed and new tampers substituted to cooperate with any changed construction of mold.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a molding apparatus, the combination with a molding frame consisting of stationary ends, a hinged front plate and a fixed back plate, an element hooked over said front plate to swing therewith, and comprising a longitudinal plate forming mold fronts and rearwardly extending sections forming molding bottoms, and an element hooked over said back plate and comprising a longitudinal plate forming rear mold ends and a plurality of division plates plates, a fixed backplate and a hingedfront plate, a unitary set of mold bottoms hooked over the upperedge of said front plate and consisting of a longitudinal strip forming front mold ends and a series of'mold bottoms extending forwardly from the lower edge of said longitudinal strip, and a removable partition element coacting with said unitary set and consisting of a longitudinal strip hooked over said back plate and a plurality of division plates extending forwardly therefromto interfit betweensaid mold bottoms.
3. In a molding apparatus, the combination with a'mold frame comprising fixed end plates, a back plate and a hinged front plate, of a set of coacting removable bottom plates and division plates carried by said front and back plates, the division plates and bottom plates each being carried in a unitary group which is hooked over the front and back plates.
