entrain srnrns PATENT OFFICE.
BED-BOTTOM FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed November 5, 1914. Serial N 0. 870,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. GALE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Waterville, Province of Quebec,
7 Dominion of Canada, have invented an Im- This invention relates to wire fabric bedbottoms of that typepresenting a diagonal or diamond mesh, and the objectof the invention is to provide a novel construction for strengthening the edge of the fabric.
One form of bed bottom of the above type is composed of a plurality of wires each of which extends from one side to the other of the bed bottom, and each of which is formed to present a flattened helix, the adjacent flattened helices being interlooped to form the completed bed bottom. In bed bottoms of this type as heretofore manufactured each edge of the bed bottom presents pairs of meeting ends of the helices and these ends have been connected by links, no connection, however, being provided between adjacent pairs of meeting ends.
It is the purpose of my inventionto provide a novel construction for strengthening a bed bottom of this nature and I accomplish it by extending along each edge thereof a flexible reinforcing member which is connected to the ends of all the wires, this flexible member preferably being in the form of a chain. I
In the drawings wherein I have illustrated a selected embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan View of a bed bottom made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of one edge of the completed bed bottom; Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the wire helices; Fig. 4 shows another form of theinvention;
I have shown in Fig. 1 a bed bottom designated generally by 3 which is sustained on a mattress frame shown generally at 4, the bed bottom being secured to the mattress frame through the medium of a plurality of coiled springs 5, as usual in devices of this nature.
The bed bottomherein shown is formed of a plurality of flattened wire helices 1, such as shown in Fig. 3, each flattened helix extending from one edge to the other of the bed bottom and the adjacent helices being interlooped with each other, as at 2-, as plainly seen in Fig. 2. This type of bed bottom is one which is known to the trade; As heretofore made, however, bed bottoms of this form have been somewhat weak on theedges' and after considerable use the edges thereof are liable to give way and sag more or less.
It is the object of my invention to strengthen the edges of bed bottoms of this type as stated above. A completed bed bottom made from these interlooped flattened helices presents at each edge a plurality of helix ends 6, 7 which alternate in direction and position, the ends of two adjacent interlooped helices extending toward each other and being situated closely adjacent each other, while the ends of the next two adjacent helices are directed away from' each other and are widely separated. The two adjacent ends 6, 7 thus constitute a pair of meeting ends, andinprior bed bottoms of this nature it has been proposed to connect the adjacent meeting ends, no connection being provided between the pairs of meeting ends. In order to strengthen and reinforce the edge of a wire fabric bed bottom of this nature, I propose to employ a flexible reinforcing member along each edge there of to which all of the helix ends are secured, and in the illustrated embodiment of my invention, this reinforcing member is in the form of a chain 8 which extends along each edge of the fabric and into the links of which the helix ends 6 and 7 are secured. As shown in Fig. 2 the end of each helix is formed into a loop 9 which is interlooped with one of the links of the chain 8, and if desired the links of the chain 8 may be of such a length that the loops 9 of the two adjacent ends 6, 7 constituting each pair may be looped into the same link 10, although this particular arrangement is not essential. This chain 8 provides a connection not only between the two meeting ends 6, 7, but also between the adjacent pairs of meeting ends and constitutes areinforcing member which fere at all with this folding or collapsing of the wire fabric, and it, therefore, has advantages over a stiff or non-yielding reinforcing edge. When, however, the chain is strengthened, as is done when the fabric is placed on the mattress frame 4, it is perfectly taut and will hold the edge of the fabric from stretching and from consequent sagging.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the loops 9 at the helix ends form links in the chain 8. In Fig. 4 I have shown another embodiment of the invention wherein the chain at the edge of the fabric is continuous, this chain being shown at 80 and being made up of a plurality of links 90. In this embodiment the loops 9 at the ends 6 and 7 of, the helices 1 are connected to the same link '90 of the continuous chain. In other Copies of this patent may be obtained for FRANCISG. GALE.
