FIREDOOR APBARATU'A'S'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom z't may concern l.
Be it known that we, 'ALBERT G. E LVIN and SAMUEL D. RosnNrnL'r, both citizens of and residents, respectively, of Somerville, in the county .of Somersetl and State of New Jersey, and of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, havejointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto apparatus for Loperating fire doors of locomotive boilers,
and'has for its object to provide an improved iuid `pressure op-l erated apparatus of this character in which are pivoted to swing ment, and to Aclose bygravit The improvement claimed is hereinafter vfully setforth.v
, In the accompanying drawings: Eigure 1 is a front elevation of a fire door apparatus embodying our improvement, the motor cyl inder being indicated in longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a transverses'ection o f the same the fire opening boiler; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the motor cylinder and the operating connections; and, Fig. 4, a' transverse section of `and illustrating a modification inthe means for supporting the Same.
cylinder casting,
v The opening is covered by the pair of doors,
10 and 11, which meet together upon the vertical center-line of the opening, and are pivoted toi swing laterally and vertically upon thel respective pins, 7 and 8, which are mounted in recesses in the frame extension,
back, and in hollow bosses,`,21, of 20, at the front, which plate may 1, at the the plate,
be formed as an integral extension of the i of the doors, 10 and 11,
The pivoted arms are provided with the respective gear seglink, 14, pivotally .in Fire-Door Apparatus,
' 6, moving the same f swings the doors of a locomotive' 3. The door frame is pro- 4, of thedoor motor,

ments, 12 and 13, which mesh together, and I both doors are thus operated by means of the lug, .12% and at the -other end to a pin, 15, carried by the piston,"6, and extending through a. horizontal slot in the side of the motor cylinder, 4. vOne end ofthe cylinder is closed by the cap., 5, and the pistoneis operated by pipes, 24 and 25, and controlled by the valve,
16, which may be of any suitable construov tion, preferably operated by a pedal device acting on the stem, 19.
When the operator desires to open the furnace doors for'jfiring, orother purposes, he opens the valve,
16, thereby admitting fluid attached at one end to the fluid pressure admitted through" v into the cylinder, where it acts on the piston, 'i
to the right, and, through link yand segmental gears, upward on their .pivots to the open position', in which the doors remain as long as-the valve, the va ve is released and closed, the Huid eX- the connecting hausts from the cylinder, and the doors closel by gravity, the outlet passage for the exhaust being restricted to prevent -slamming of the doors.l
For the purpose `of operating the doors by hand whenever desired, we provide a hand lever, V18, which is curved around the door openingand provided with a .straight shank, 18", at its upper end, and ahandleflS, at
its lower end. The shank is pivoted loosely on the pin, 7, of the door, 10, and is adapted to engage a boss' or lug, 17, formed on said door'insuch a manner as to swing the door upto its open position when the lever is pulled up by the handle, 18a. This movement is alsotransmitted through the geared segments and link to move the piston out', and open the other door, 11, at the same time. Inl order to hold the door open in different positions, the plate, 20, may be provided on its rear facelwith a number of notches located at desired points, such as 31 and 30, and adapted to engage the lever, 18, and hold the same in such position. The lug, 17, is preferably formed with an .in-
plate when the lever is pulled upward by the handle, the looseness of the bearing of the lever uponl the pin readily allowing for such deflection. One of thenotches, 3l, is
16,.is held open. -When located so as. to latch the door open slightly fordraft purposes and preventing the formation of smoke when the locomotive isl standing at a station, while another notch,
30, is located at or near the end of the movementrof the lever in order to latch the door fully open when desired. If the door should be standing latched by the hand lever in its partly open or draft position, when the controlling valve is opened for operating the fluid pressure motor, the piston acting through the rack and segment swings the door away from the hand lever to'its wide openposition, the hand lever at Y the same time dropping out of said notch swings back by gravityto its stop, at its normal closed position. Then upon releasing the control,n ling valve, the door closes in the usual way.
, If, however, the door is lat'chedI by the hand ing of the doors bythe movement of the valve orthe failure of the fluid pressure,
p when the doorsare manually set to the open 4fireboX for inspection orA repairs.
position for the purpose of entering the It also enables the fireman to operate the doors by fluid pressure in the usual manner, even xwhen the doors are set at the intermediate draft position.
In Fig. l,` We have shown a modied form of pivot pin on which the door 'or doors may be hung, and also adapted to support 'the motor cylinder.; /InV this'construction, the; pin, 7a, is provided with an interme diate or middle portion of comparatively .large diameter, on Which the door, 10, and
the hand lever, 18, are mounted, and two reduced 4end p'ortions forming shoulders against one of'which the frame, 1, is rigidly 4clamped by a nut on the rearend of the pin, the other kreduced end extending through the cylinder flange or plate, 20,
whichis rigidly clamped against the other l shoulder of thepin .by the nut on its front end. Inthis-way the pin is firmly secured turbing the door, by simply uncoupling the link, and removing the nuts from the pins.
A bracket arm, lb, boltedto the frame, may be employed for bracing the top of the cylinder, if desired.
Having now described our invention, whatwe claim as vnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A
l. In a fire door apparatus, the combination of a door frame, a door'pivoted at its upper side to swing laterally and vertically, a motor cylinder mounted above said vdoor and having a depending flange or plate, a piston in said cylinder with connections for operating Said door, and a pivot pin for the door, mounted in said frame and in the cylinder plate.
2, In a lire'v door apparatus, the combination of a door frame, a door pivoted at its upper side to swing laterally and vertically,
a motor cylinder mounted above said pivot and having a depending flange or plate, a
piston with connections for operating said door, and a pivot pin for the door, mounted at the rear end in the frame,' and at the front endl in the cylinder plate.
y 3. In a lire door apparatus, the combination of a door frame, a pivot pin rigidly mounted in said frame,'a door pivoted on said pin, a motor cylinder having a flange rigidly secured to and supported on said pivot pin, and a pistonand connections for operating said door.
LlLIn a lire door` apparatus, the combination of a door frame,a pivot pin rigidly secured at its inner end in said frame, va door pivoted to swing laterally and vertically on said pin, a motor cylinder having a downwardly projecting flange rigidly se'- cured to and supported on the outer end of said'pin, and a piston and connections for operating said door.
In testimonyy whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
