Be it known that I, ARTHUR DUG EYT a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of 'Wayne and State of. Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbureteis, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.`
The invention relates to carbureters of .thattype in whichv a separate passage is provided for the commingled air and fuel when the engine is idling7 from the main passage used when the engine is working under load.
It is the object of the present invention to obtain a construction which will voperate more satisfactorily under variable conditions'and in which adjustment iseliected by the setting of a singleyalve.
It is a further object p utilize a difierential pressure drop for#dischargingthe liquid fuel into the main and'auxi'liary mixing passages. I i

Thisaction will unseal the lower end of the tube l, preventing further passage 'of the liquid thereinto, and will also permit the air from the..inlet F to pass downward in thecup and into the l'owcr end Aof the nozzle L. where it is commingled with through the passage I. i l With the construction as above described, whenever it is necessary to adjust the carthe stream of liquid discharged bureter., the opening or closing of the valve E will e`ct this adjustment which -will control botli the main and the auxiliary commingling devices. Furthermore, when the,
'carburetor is operating under variable velocities of air current th'erewill be 'an increase andi decrease of pressure drop at both thedischargeend of the-nozzle Land also at the`discharge end of the passage but the ratio of variation is not the saine. This is indicated in the diagram. Fig. 2, in which the curves O O. etc., indicate the. relative variation in pressure drop at different points in.the mixing chamber, which is in projection therewit 75 f same into the passage above the throttle H,J
The purpose of forming the tube L2 of greater diaii'ietcr than thc nozzle L and of also providing the inlet apertures L, is to accelerate the action. Thus, were the nozzle L to extend without interruption from the cup to the point where it terminates in the mixing cliaii'iber, an appreciable time interval would be required in elevating the liquid fuel through thisnozz'le before it would be mixed with the air. On the other-hand, with the construction as shown, the pressure-drop at the upper end ot thel section L2 will be transferred therethrough to a point immediately above the nozzle section L', which will quickly lift the oil therein, while the .air entering through the ports L3 willbe 'commingled with the oil. A.
It will be noted that the form of tlie passage within the carbureter casing is that of A-a- Venturi tube, .bach upon itself.
