Description

w. 1. RYAN.
COMBINED VENTILATOR.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 3. t9l3.
1,186,42. Patented June 13, 1916.
WILLIAM J. RYAN, OF SAPULPA, OKLAHOMA.
COMBINED VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 3, 1918. Serial No. 798,221.
b all whom it may concern.
Be itknown that I. \VILLIAM J. RYAN, a citizen of the l nited States, residing at Sapulpa. in the county of Creek and State of Oklahoma. have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved window ventilator which also forms a bay attachmentto a window, the object of the invention being to provide an improved ventilator which also forms a window screen and a bay or lookout attachment and which is adapted to direct a current of air without a building. into the same, from either direction and also to prevent dust from being blown into a window by the wind.
The invention consists in the constructlon, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the window ventilator. screen. bay or lookout showing the same attached for use. Fig. 2 is a horizon- -tal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line arzof Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention I provide a frame 1 which comprises a triangular bottom or floor 2, a correspondingly-shaped top or roof 3 and a vertical post 4 which connects the outer corner or apices of the bottom and top. The frame is also here shown as provided with ornamental cresting 5 at the top but this may be omitted if preferred. Under the bottom of the frame is a supporting bracket 6 which may be at- ,tached to the outer side of the wall of a building to support the frameat the outer side of the lower portion of a window as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom 'and top of the frame are also secured to the frame of the window by means of suitable hooks 7 or other suitable attaching device may be used if preferred wtihin the scope of my invention.
In the sides of the frame, which converge outwardly to the post 4, are screens 8 each of which comprises a suitable rectangular frame 9 and a covering 10 of iron gauze or other suitable foraminous material. One side of each screen is hinged to the post 4 as at 11 and the opposite side of each screen is connected to one side of the window frame by a hook 12. The frame 1 with its screens which form its outwardly converging sides may be readily attached to and detached from an ordinary window as will be understood.
I also provide a glazed sash 13 which forms a movable partition and is arranged 111 an upright position in the frame, its outer side being hinged to the post 4 and I the said sash being adapted to be turned angularl y in the frame so that it may lie against either of the screens 8 or may be arranged at a point midway between the said screens and at right angles to the wall of the house. Suitable means are provided to secure the said glazed sash or partition in any desired position in'the frame and for the purposes of this specificatlon the said glazed sash is shown provided at its inner side with a bolt 14 which may be engaged with any of the openings 15 in the bottom of the frame, to hold the sash inadjusted position.
lVhen the partition wall or sash 13 is arranged midway between the frames a current of air from without, blown directly against the wall of the building, will be caused to enter the room or building through the window when the wind is blowing parallel with the wall on which the ventilator is used the sash 13 should be turned in the opposite direction from that .in which the wind is blowing and to bear against one of the screens 8 and thus caused to act as a. deflector to direct the wind or current of air. into the room through the window. When it is desired to exclude dust during a wind storm without excluding air from the window the sash 13 should be turned against the screen 8 on which the wind is blowing, and the said sash will then serve as a deflector to change the. direction of the wind as it strikes the frame and divert it outwardly from the wall of the building and 'thus prevent dust from entering the window through the other screened side of the frame. My improved ventilator also forms a bay attachment or lookout attachment for a window as will be understood. When the device has been detached from the window the screens 8 and the glazed sash 13 may be folded against each other as will be understood.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construc- Patented June 13, 1916.
tion of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
, claim Having thus described my invention, I
A ventilator consisting of a triangular bottom member and a triangular top member, a pair of rectangular frames, a vertical post to which the outer ends of said frames are hinged, a deflector hingedly connected at its outer end to said vertical post so as to Q swing between said frames, a support for the bottom member to hold its opposite edges against'the edges of said frames, means for.
fastening said frames at their ends to the sides of an opening, said top member resting upon the upper edges of said frames and WILLIAM J. RYAN.
