To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. MULLAn KEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to oil burners, and has for one of its objects the provision of a duplex oil burner which is capable of being readily attached to or positioned within kitchen ranges, cooking stoves, heating stoves, furnaces, grates, etc., burning either wood or coal.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of'a duplex oil burner provided with a novel form of deflectorplates and their mountings for deflecting the flames of the respective burners in any desired direction within the range or stove.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a novel base for supporting and maintaining in fixed relation to each other the conduit pipes of the burners.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a duplex oil burner which is capable of being attached to or detached from ranges, stoves, etc., which is simple in construction, eflicient and durable in purpose, and which can be manufactured and sold upon themarket at an exceedingly small cost.
These and other objects will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is more clearly understood from the following specification, the subjectunatter of the claims, and the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

For the sake of clearness and convenience, I Wlll describe my invention as being applied to the fire box of a kitchen range, however, I donot restrict my invention to this exact application, as the invention is equally adaptable to other types of stoves such as cooking and heating stoves burning either wood or coal, and also to fire-place grates.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the top of the fire box of the range, 2 the back wall, 8 the front wall having the door openmg 4 formed therein, 5 the front grate within thefire box, 6 the bottom grate, and 7 the ash pit beneath the bottom grate 6. Di vlding the fire box from the oven of the range is the partition wall 8, and between the upper edge of the partition wall 8 and the top 1 is the draft flue 9.
The duplex oil burner comprises two individual burners fed by an oil tank 10 having the vertically disposed depending supply pipe 11 provided adjacent its lower end with the main Valve 12, and secured upon the lower end of the supply pipe 11 below the main valve 12 is the front individual. burner valve 13. Beneath the front individual burner valve 13 is the rear individual burner valve 14, the valves 13 and 14: being connected together by the stub pipe 15.
Connected to the front individual burner valve 13 is the front individual burner feed pipe 16, this pipe extends horizontally for a portion of its length and is curved upwardly and outwardly as at 17, providing the upper horizontal vaporizing portion 18, and is then curved downwardly and inwardly as at 19 and terminating in the lower horizontal portion 20, upon the end of which is provided the cap 21. In the upper surface of the horizontal portion 20 and adjacent the cap 21 is formed the aperture 22, this aperture 22 providing the burner outlet, and secured upon the lower horizontal portion 20 beneath the aperture or burner outlet 22 is the starting cup 28. This construction forms the front individual burner.
Connected to the rear individual burner valve 14 is the rear individual burner feed pipe 24:, this pipe also extends horizontally for a portion of its length and is curved upwardly and outwardly as at 25, providing the upper horizontal vaporizing portion 26, and is then curved downwardly and inwardly as at 27 providing the lower horizontal portion 28, upon the end of which is prolet, and secured upon the lower horizontal portion 28 beneath the aperture or burner outlet '30 is'the starting cup 31. This construction forms. the rear individual burner.
The main horizontal portions of the burner feed pipes 16 and 24 are of different lengths in order that the rear individual burner may be properly positioned in alinement with and behind the front individual burner, the burner feed pipe 16 being posi tioned above, the burner feed pipe 24, and to provide for this positioning of the feed pipes 16 and 24 and the individual burners, the upwardly and outwardly curved portion 25 ofthe pipe 24 describes a greater are than the upwardly and outwardly curved portion 17 of the pipe 16.
For supporting and V maintaining the burner feed pipes 16 and 24 in their proper spaced relation, a pair of oppositely disposed base blocks 32 and 33 are provided.
The blocks have the upwardly extended portions 34 and 35 respectively, and formed within their meeting faces are the upper semi-circular recesses 36 and 37 in which is seated the front individual burner feed pipe 16, and also the lower semi-circular recesses 38 and 39 in which is seated the rear individual burner feed pipe 24. These base blocks are placed face to face with the burner feed pipes 16 and 24 seated onefabove the other within the recesses 36' and 37 and 38 and 39 respectively, and secured together through the medium of the bolt 40 which passestransversely through the registering apertures formed'in the upper extended portions 34 and 35 of the base blocks 32 and V 33Jat a point midway between the burner feed pipes 16 and 24,- asclearly shown in Which frictionally engage the upperportion brace the upper horizontal vaporizing por of the "spherical heads 43 of the Z-shaped brackets 44, which are provided at their lower ends with the collars 45 which emtions 18 and 26 of the individual burners respectively, adjacent the bends 17 and 25.

While I have'here shown my invention as including only two burners, which I will. now broadly term burners for the purpose of further description, I desire it to be under stood that my invention is not limited to this'exact number, for by dispensing with one of the burners and the valve therefor, I
a' single burner and valve may be used, or by adding additional burners and the valves therefor, 'my invention may include any number of burners and valves desired or necessary to meet the exigencies of the case. Moreover, the burners may or may not be supplied with the deflector plates as shown,
but I deem the use of the plates as exceedingly advantageous for deflecting the flames of the burners to any point within thefire box of the range or stove to which the same may be attached in order to attain thegreatest units of heat at a given point, as well as to economize in fuel.
The plate 41'shown inFig 2 and the ma n-1 ner of mounting thesame permits a univer sal movement of the plate for d rectlng the flame at'any point within the stove,- and may be operated at will by thejuse of a poker V or other implement, this being easily accomplished due to thefact of the ball and socket or universal mounting" of the plate 41. The plate 47 shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is only capable of a lateral'swinging movement with respect to the burner, which may be either in a horizontal position, as shown in full lines or to the rightor left directions, the plate being shown as positioned to the leftonly, as shown'in'dotted lines in Fig. 3, thisadjustment of'the plate47 be- ,ing accomplished jby' loosening the :nut of" the bolt 50, adjusting the plate 47 in. the
desired position, and then screwing the nut firmly against the upper surface of the plate 41-7, whereby the binding action of the eye bolt 50 firmly secures the plate 47 in its.
adjusted position.
Another feature of my invention resides in the construction of the burners out of a single piece of pipe of any suitable length, by bending one end of the pipe to a form substantially the shape of the'letter J, but extending the curved portion of the pipe farther inwardly and downwardly and forming a transverse orifice in the upper wall of the pipe adjacent its end and providing a cap upon the end of the pipe. This manner of forming the burners pro duces not only a simple and cheap burner, but an eiiicient vapor burner, as well, as the flame from the burner outlet 22 or 30 vaporizes the oil in the horizontal vaporizing portion 18 or 26 in its passage therethrough when the portion 18 or 26 has become suffi- -ciently heated after the initial lighting of the burner outlet 22 or 30 as the case may be.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a stove, and the fire box thereof, of a liquid fuel reservoir, a supply pipe depending from said reservoir, a plurality of burners connected to said supply pipe, each of said burners being formed of a single piece of pipe having one of its ,ends curved upwardly and outwardly and thence downwardly and inwardly to provide an elongated horizontal feed pipe portion, a horizontal vaporizing portion, and a hori zontal burner outlet portion.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a stove, and the fire box thereof, of a liquid fuel reservoir, a supply pipe depending from said reservoir, a plurality of burners connected to said supply pipe, each of said burners being formed of a single piece of pipe having one of its ends curved upwardly and outwardly and thence downwardly and inwardly to provide an elongated horizontal feed pipe portion, a horizontal vaporizing portion, and a hori zontal burner outlet, and a double convexshaped deflector plate adjustably supported Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressingthe Commissioner of I'a'tents.
