IMPROVEMENT IN OPERATING THROTTLE-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,676, dated September 5, i871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BELLIS, of Indianapolis, Marion county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop or Tl'1rottle-Valves,of which the following is a speciication:
It is well known that many serious and not a few fatal accidents occur in establishments whose machinery is impelled by steam which might be prevented or lessened did some ready and accessible means exist i'or suddenly stopping the engine.
Thepresent invention relates to a device whereby a person on any door of a factory or workshop is enabled to close the throttle quickly in case of emergency, and thus to stop the machinery.
Figure l is a vertical section of a throttle or valve and its appurtenances, embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 shows my apparatus applied to a house of several floors.
rllhe steam from the boiler, conveyed through `the pipe A, enters a chamber, C, which, when the valve is lifted, as shown, communicates with the interior ofthe globe or shell B through apertures c and c', of which the upper aperture c is so much in excess as to make hthe valve, when liberated from the closin g-screw, seliopening by the pressure of the steam. Of corresponding size and relative distance with the openings c c are two disks, D D, whose connecting-ribs or bars E, being prolonged below the lower and smaller disk D', serve to guide the valve to its seats, and also enable the engineer, when his valve has become nnequally worn, to grind the same in its seats. The hand-screwF is not fastened to the valve-stein G, but the point of the screw presses upon a piece of steel, H, let into the head I ofthe valve-stein. IThe head I has a slot, i, to receive the end of a weighted lever, J, which is fulcrumed at K. The weight L is adjustable nearer to or further from the fulcrum, to a position where its gravity will just serve to overcome the friction of the stuiiing box M, through which the valve-stem passes. The lever J has at or near its outer end an eye, j, or other provision for the attachment of a cord, N, which, being carried upward and downward through lioors of the building, may pass over a pulley or pulleys in the upper story thereof, and, being carried down in some convenient and conspicuous place, become available for instantly closing the throttle, and thus arresting the motion of the machinery from any floor ofthe building.
My closing devices, although preferably used in conjunction with a balance-valve such as I have described, may obviouslybe made available with other forms of valve.
I claim as new and of my invention- A throttle-valve opened by the steam-pressure, and capable of being closed either by screw F or by the supplementary closing device J K L N, in the manner and for the purpose stated.
