J. MEYER.-
SPIGOT.

SPIGOT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11113 13, 1916 Application filed December 12, 1914. Serial No. 876,896.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH MEYER, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spigots, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is to refine the construction of spigots in point of reducing to a minimum the leakage of the same when in use and to this end the invention consists in arranging the valve of the spigot between two compressible elements and mounting on the spigot an adjustable means for effecting the compression of the elements when desired.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of my improved spigot. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the valve portion of the spigot taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one ofthe compressible elements used in the construction of the spigot.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 indicates the body of the spigot, 2 the valve thereof, 3 the compressible elements which form the seat of the valve and 4. the means for effecting the adjustment of the compressible elements. The body of the spigot, which is, by preference made of wood is of the usual shape and is provided with a channel or bore 5 which communicates at the outer end with an enlarged valve chamber 6. The valve chamber is cylindrical in shape in cross section and has mounted within its opposite ends a pair of compressible elements 7 and 8. These elements are preferably formed of cork or a similar substance and have their opposing faces cut away in a semi circular shape as indicated at 9 so as to conform to and provide a seat for the cylindrical stem 10 of the valve 2. The valve stem which passes through the opposed openings 11 in the walls of the valve chamber, is centrally bored as at 12 and is provided with an outlet opening 13, which eifects communication between the bores in both the body of ,the spigot and the valve stem when the valve is turned to its open position. An opening 1 1 is also provided in the compressible element 7 and this opening is arranged in alinement with the bore in the body of the spigot. Any suitable shaped handle 15 is provided on the upperend of the valve stem for operating the valve when desired.
The means for effecting the adjustment of the compressible elements is here shown in the form of an adjusting screw 16. This screw which is mounted in the outer end of the body of the spigot is provided with an enlarged head or shouldered portion 17 which abuts the end of the compressible element 8. Now it will be obvious that when the screw is turned in the direction to effect the compression of the elements which form the valve seat that the elements will be firmly pressed against the sides of the valve stem and thereby prevent any leakage around the valve. Now when the adjusting screw. is turned in the opposite direction the com pression on the elements 7 and 8 will be released thereby permitting the valve to be withdrawn from the body of the spigot, and the elements to be replaced if desired.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
What I claim as new is A spigot comprising a body having a bore disposed longitudinally thereof, and which terminates short of one end thereof, said body also having an interiorly located chamber of greater diameter than the bore and with which the said bore communicates, said body also having an opening passing transversely through the same and communicating with the chamber between the ends thereof, a valve having a stem which is less in diameter than the opening and which is turnably mounted in the opening compressible clamping elements located in the opposite ends of the chamber and having end portions which extend beyond the side Walls of the opening, said elements beingspaced from h her a d. p ially h ulirq md w. the valye stemyand providing-a seat there-if for, and an adjl'lstable member" mounted in the spigot and engaging one of the elements fonefl'ecting the compression of the 1 elements aboutgtheevalve stem;
