Description

the quilting l te JOHN Burr GLADNEY,
OF VELASCO, TEXAS.
QUILTING-FRAME.
i Application led December l To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOI-1N Burr GLADNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Velasco, in the county ot Brazoria, State of Texas, have invented a new anduseful Quilting-Frame; andv I do hereby declare the 'following to be `a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in quilting frames, and has for its object to provide a device of this character 'which embodies novel features of construction whereby the quilt can be conveniently handled and readily brought into position for either machine or hand quilting.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a quilting frame which is 'simple and inexpensive in its construction, which is suspended from a trolley and can be readily moved from place to place, whichcan be set at different heights, and which can be advantageously used for either machine or hand Quilting. i
Vtitli these and other objects in view, the invent-ion consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the' parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in thc appended claims.
For a -full understanding of the invention. reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation oi. a trolley quilting frame constructed in vaccordance with the. invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 an end elevation thereof, portions being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the frame. showing the same as modified to form a` cradh or crib.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present rembodiment of the invention. the-reference characters A designate a pair of similar and opposed end frames which have a spaced and parallel relation to each other when frame is in operation, and are their lower ends with the roller provided at Thix cnd frames A have ca rrying bars 1.
. A, being each 10 is mounted.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. Patented Jun@ 13, 11.916.'
d, 1915. Serial. N0. 66,737-
substantially the sameshape as the letter formed of a pair of upwardly converging uprights, 2 which are connected at an intermediate point by a cross bar 3, Go and at their upper ends by the plates 4 which are applied to opposite sides of the uprights. It will also be observed that the upper ends of the uprights 2 are beveled* and havev a spaced and parallel relation t0 65 each other, cooperating with the side plates 4 to provide a. channel or guideway for the reception of a vhanger The upper end of the hanger 5 is square or rectangular in cross section so as to be held against rotation within the guide channel at the top of the end frame A, although the lower end of the hanger is substantially circular in cross section and loosely received within openings 6 and 7 in the cross bar 3 and 75 roller supporting har 1 respectively. A set screw 8 in one of the plates 4 serves to engage the hanger 5 for the purpose of locking the same in an adjusted position. 4The upper end of the hanger 5 is fitted with a 80 looped plate 9 within which apgrooved wheel lhetwo end frames A are duplicates of each einer, being each provided with an adjustably mounted hanger 5 and the trolley wheels 10 of the two 85 hangers'are adapted to engage an overhead cable or wire 11- suitably stretched across the top ofthe room. Thevplates 4- are slightly spaced from the upper ends of the uprights 2, thereby providing a space within which the looped plates 9 and trolley wheels 1() can be drawn and housed when the device is not inv use.
The lower extremities of the uprights 2 are biiiircated, indicated at 2, and the 95 roller supporting bars 1 are reduced at one end.` as indicated at 1a. as well as at a point spaced from the opposite end. as indicated at 1h. The reduced end portion 1a of cach of the bars is inserted within the lower end of one of the uprights Zand engaged by a pivot pin l2, while the reduced portion 1b is received within the bifurcated end 2 of the opposite upright 2 and secured in position therein b v a locking pin 13. The portion of each of the bars 1 between the lower ends of the uprights 2 is provided with a pair of openings 14, while the projecting end of each of the bars is provided with a pair of openings 15. T110 The rollers 16 are each provided at the ends thereof with trunnions or stems 16 'of 'a size to engage any of the openings le and 15. For machine 4work the trunnions 16 are placed in engagement with the openings 14 of the roller supporting bars 1, while for hand quilting one of the rollers would be nounted within a set of the end openings l5, thereby presenting a larger area for quilting. The quilt or material being operatedupon may be tacked upon one of the rollers and wound upon the opposite roller as the work proceeds, or unwound from one roller and wound upon the other roller. When necessary, for purposes of adjustment, the two locking pins 13 can be withdrawn and the bars l swung downwardly and upwardly on the opposite side of the frame about the pins 12 as pivots. After the desired adjustment has been made the bars 1 can be swung back to their Original positions andthe locking pins'13 replaced.' Y
The rollers 16 are shown as provided at points adjacent the ends thereof with keepers 17 which are suitably arranged for engagement with locking hooks 18 on the bars 1. lVhen these hooks 18 are caused to engage the keepers 17 the end frames A are locked to the rollers so that they can not swing away therefrom. f'lhe entire Aquiltingfi'aliie can be moved back and forth upon the overhead cable l1, and by adjusting the. hangers 5 within the end frames A the quilting frame can be set at the desired y elevation.
The device is also adapted to be converted into a cradle. For this purpose the rollers 16 are removed and replaced by side bars 19 provided with upwardly extending skeleton frames 20, said frames inelining outwardly and resting against rods 2l inserted within openings 22 in the end frames A. 'l`ransversely disposed slats are then placed upon the side bars 1t), said slats cooperating with the skeleton side frames 90 and the end frames A to provide a cradle.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zp 1..A quilting frame, including an overhead supporting cable, A-shaped skeleton end Aframes having vertical openings in the apexes thereoil and corresponding openings in the cross bars, hangers slidable through the vertical guidewaysl and openings ot the cross bars, meansfor locking the hangers in an adjusted position, trolley wheels upon the hangers for engaging the overhead cable, roller supporting bars at the lower ends of the A-shaped end frames, and quilt-ing rollers journaled between the roller supporting bars.
2. A quilting frame., including an overhead supporting eable, A-shaped skeleton end frames having polygonal vertically disposed guideways at the apexes thereof and provided with corresponding circular openings in the cross bars, hangers slidably mounted Within the guideways and openings and having polygonal upper ends which interlock with the polygonal. guideways to normally hold the hangers against rotation, means -l'or locking the hangers in an adjusted position, trolley wheels upon the hangers for engaging the-overhead cable7 roller supporting bars at the lower ends of the end frames, and quilting rollers journaled between the roller supporting bars.
3. A quilting frame including a pair of substantially ifi-shaped skeleton frames, an overhead supporting cable, hangers slidablc upon the end frames, means 'for locking the hangers in anadjustcd position,A trolley wheels upon lthe hangers for engaging the overheadl cable, a roller supporting bar at the bottom of each of the end frames, one end oi each of the roller supporting bars being hingfdly connected to one arm lof the A-shaped frame and detachably connected at a point spaced from the opposite end of the other arm of the it-shaped frame,
yand the roller supporting bars being provided with bearings, quilting rollers having trunuions at'the ends thereof which are loosely received within the bearings, keepers upon` one of the quilting rollers, and hook members upon the roller supporting bars for engagement with lthe said keepers.
In testimony .whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. i"
