Be it known that I, ARTHUR KAY, a Gilli-.- zen of the United States of America, residing at WVest Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stitching-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fabric stitching machines, and more particularly to the class of over-edge stitching machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine wherein the edges of fabrics will be cut so that*the same can be joined by an overlooking or border stitch without employing a single looper to form a loop alternately above and below the fabric. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine wherein two loops are employed which work in conjunction with a reciprocating needle and thread guide so that an over-edge stitch may be made for producing a border on the fabrics joined by the over-edge stitching, which is effected in a novel manner during the operation of the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine of this character wherein the reciprocating needle thereof moves at an angle to a pair of loopers, which are moved to and fro in conjunction with a loop-carrying point so that an overlooking stitch is formed for the bordering of the edges of fabrics and the uniting of the same together. i
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine of this character wherein a take-up mechanism is dispensed with, and in lieu thereof a simple tensioning device is employed on the looper to assure the necessary tightness of the stitching.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine wherein the bordering of the edges of fabrics is accomplished in a novel manner, and the stitching is effected with uniformity with a resultant interlocking of the stitches looped above and below the fabrics.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stitching machine of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, and inexpensive in menu facture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the machine comprisesa base 10, from which rise spaced alining bearings 11 having journaled therein a driving shaft 12. on one end of which is fixed a belt pulley or wheel 13, while loose upon the said shaft 12 adjacent to the pulley or wheel 13 is an idle pulley or wheel 14, over. which is adapted to be trained v the driving belt (not shown), which can be readily shifted onto the fixed pulley or wheel 13 for the driving of the shaft as usual. Integral with and rising from the base 10 at one side of the shaft 12 is a stand-. ard 15 formed with an arm 16 at right an? gles to the shaft 12, the arm being formed with a vertical portion .17 at its free end which is provided with guidelugs 18 arranged in spaced relation to each other in which is slidably fitted a needle post or stem 19 formed at its lower end with. a needle holder 20 in which is detachably fitted a vertical needle 21, the same working through a notch 22 formed in a foot 23 fixed to a bracket 2 1 secured to an arm 25 mount? ed upon a rocking shaft26 which is journaled in bearings 27 formed on the out.- turned flange 28 of a p1ate'29 which is secured to the standard 15. Surrounding the shaft 26 between the bearings-27 is an. adjustable collar 30 to oneend of which is fixed a coiled tension spring 31, the same being also engaged against one of the bearings 27 so as to act upon the shaft 26, whereby the foot 23 will he held under tension when shifted laterally away from the arm 16, while engaged about a pin 32 on the bracket 21 is a coiled expansion spring 33 which normally holds the foot 23 in lowered position and under tension. Secured to the arm 16 is an L-shaped plate 3 1, against which works a cam lever 35, the same being pivoted to the arm 25 so that on the raising of the lever 35 the foot will be elevated against the resistance of the spring 31 to permit the in sertion of fabrics thereunder, the shaft 26 being laterally shifted in a manner presently described.
Supported. upon the arm 16 at the side opposite the arm 25 is a swinging lever 36, the same journaled on a stud pintle 37 at one end thereof while its opposite end has pivotally connected thereto a link 38, the same being pivoted to astud 39 fixed in a slide block 40' movable in a guide slot 41 formed in the vertical portion 17 of the arm 16, the stud 39 being also engaged in the needle post or stem 19 so that on the move ment of the lever 36 the post or stem19 will move vertically and reciprocate in the lugs 18 on the vertical portion 17 of the said arm 16 for operating the vertical needle 21 carried by the said post or stem. Pivotally connected to the lever 36 intermediate its ends is an eccentric arm 42 which is strapped to an eccentric 13 fixed to the driving shaft 12 so that motion will be imparted therefrom to the vertical needle 21 carried by the post or stem 19. Mounted upon the base 10 is a vertical support 41 to which is fixed a horizontal work plate 15 provided with a slotted throat plate 46, through the slots of which works a roughened feed plate 17 detachably mounted upon a slide box 48 supported upon and movable upon a guide block 19 arranged therein. which is provided with a slot 50 in which is engaged a cam 51 secured to the driving shaft 12 so that onthe rotation of the latter the proper movement will be imparted to the block for actuating the box 18 so that the feed plate 17 will move upwardly and downwardly. The box 48 is moved forwardly and rearwardly, and this is accomplished by means of a rocking frame 52 pivoted in a bearing 53 secured to the base 10 forwardly of the box 48, the frame 52 being formed with a slot 54 in which works a block 55 pivoted upon a stud 56 carried by the said box 48, while pivoted to the frame 52 is a throw arm 57, the same being strapped to an eccentric 58 fixed to the driving shaft 12 so that on the rocking of the frame 52 the box 4E8 will be moved forwardly and rearwardly for imparting a similar movement to the feed plate so that fabric introduced between the work supporting plate 45 and the foot 23 will be automatically fed overthe work supporting plate rearwardly thereof for the stitching of the fabric in amanner presently described.
Secured to the base 10 is a stationary guide block 59 in which is formed a guideway 60 having movable therein a slide 61 formed with a vertical ear 62 in which is mounted a. horizontal stud 63 having strapped thereto one end of a throw arm 64, the opposite end of which is suitably strapped to an eccentric 65 on the driving shaft 12 so that reciprocating movement will be imparted to the slide 61 on the rotation of the said driving shaft. The block 59 is formed with .a vertical bearing 66 in which is journaled a rocking shaft 67 having fixed to its upper end a slotted arm 68, in the slot of which is mounted a slidable block. 69, the same being pivoted to a vertical stud 70 carried by a horizontally disposed slide bar 71, the same being disposed at right angles to the slide 61 and is movable in a guidew-ay 7 2 formed ina supporting bar 73 which has detachably connected thereto an L-shaped plate 7 1 which retains the slide bar 71 in the guideway 72, the supporting bar 73 being integrally formed with an up right 75 having a foot 7 6 secured to the base 10 so that the bar 71' will be held horizontally for movement at. right angles to the path of movement of the needle 21 in the holder 20 of the needle post or stem 19 of the machine. Detachably secured to the slide bar 71 is a clamp 77 by which the upper and lower loopers 78 and 79, respec tively, are fastened to'the slide bar 71, the upper looper 7 8 being adapted to move across the foot 23 above the same at right angles to the vertical needle 21, while the lower looper 79 is adapted to move across the path of the needle 21 at right angles thereto below the foot 23 during the reciprocation of the slide bar 71. in the guideway 72 in the supporting bar 73 so as to form a loop alternately above and below the fabric on the work supporting plate 45, in a manner presently described.
The shaft 67 has fixed to its lowerend a slotted arm 80, in the slot of which works a block 81, the same being pivoted to the slide 61 so that on rotation of the driving shaft 12 motion will be imparted to the slide bar 71 for actuating the loopers carried thereby.
Mounted upon the base 10, contiguous to the foot 7 6 of the upright 7 5, is a bearing 82 having a vertical post 83 to which is pivoted a link 84, the same being pivoted to a lever 85, one end of which is pivoted to a swinging arm 86 which has one end fixed to a rock-ing shaft 87 journaled in bearings 88 at opposite sides of the standard 15, and supported upon this swinging arm 86 is a slide block 89 which moves thereon. and is formed with a strap bearing 90, engaging an eccentric 91 on the driving shaft 12 so that the swinging arm. will be moved. ver-.
tically directly from the driving shaft, the other end of the lever 85 being formed with a hub 92 in which is detachably secured a stud 93 to which is fixed a holder 94 supporting a loop carrying point 95, which is adapted to take the loop or-thread from the lower looper 79, and brings it into position in the path of the upper looper 78, which is formed with an eye 96, through which is passed a thread adapted to be passed through the loop removed from the lower looper 79 to form the upper loop, which is caught by the vertical needle 21, whence the top looper 78 moves backwardly and drops the stitch, when the machine is operating.
Mounted in the bearings 27 and parallel with the shaft 26 is a shaft 97 to which is fixed an L-shaped arm 98 formed'at its free end with a vertical blade support 99 on which is mounted a fabric cutting blade 100, the same being adjustably fastened thereto by means of a clip 101, the arm 98 intermediate its ends being formed with a stud 102 to which is pivotally connected a throw arm 103, the same being strapped to an eccentric 104 formed on the driving shaft 12 so that the said arm 98 will be swung vertically for reciprocating the knife blade 100, which cooperates with a stationary shearing blade 105 adjustably mounted in a guide 106 on a depending wing 107 which carries spaced parallel guide pins 108 at right angles thereto, and working in guide bores 109 formed in a stationary block 110 fixed to the under face of the work supporting plate 45, the block being formed with a suitable seat 111 receiving a coiled expansion spring 112 which acts upon the wing 107 so as to hold the blade 105 in proper relation to the blade 100 for the cutting of the fabrics placed upon the work table and being fed beneath the foot 23 by the feed plate 29 during the working of the machine.
The foot 28 is formed with a finger 113 which projects into the notch 22 and is disposed at right angles to the bottom looper 79 so as to catch the loop or thread formed by the latter whenthe loop carrying point removes the looped thread from the bottom looper, and in this manner the loop or thread thus formed is prevented from being flung away from the loop car rying point during the operation of the machine. p
Supported upon the arm 16 is a thread tensioning device 114 about which the thread which is fed to the vertical needle 21 is trained, so as to properly tension the thread during the working of the machine.
Arranged within one of the bearings 27 and working against the shaft 79 is a coiled expansion spring 115 which is adapted to shift the shaft within the bearing 27, while working against the outer ends of the shafts 26 and 97 is a disk-like feed nut 116 provided with a handle 117, the nut being adjustable on a threaded stud 118 fixed in one of the bearings 27 so that on working the nut in one direction the shafts 26 and 79, respectively, will be shifted in the bearings 27 for adjusting the foot 23 and the blade 100 carried by the arms 25 and 98, respectively. The tensioning device 114 is provided with a thread guide 119, and likewise the vertical portion 17 of the arm 16 carries thread guides 120 which serve to guide the threads to the respective needle 21 and the upper looper 78, while the ma chine is operating.
The movable block 48 is held for vertical movement between vertical guide posts 121 which are mounted upon the base 10' and rise therefrom.
Secured to the base 10 is a forwardly inclined guide plate 122, which guides the trimmings cut by the blades from the edges of the fabric and delivers it from the machine.
It will be noted that instead of employing a single looper to form a loop alternately above and below the fabric, two loopers are employed which work in conjunction with a reciprocating needle and thread guide, the loopers being arranged one above the fabric and the other below it, and have a .to and fro movement. The travel of the loopers is such that'no take-up mechanism is required, but in lieu thereof a tensioning device is employed to assure the necessary tightness of the stitching. The needle and the loop carrying point work at right angles to the loopers. he cycle of movement for making a stitch in one form of overlooking on the machine is as follows. The needle 21 takes the thread through the fabric and forms a loop, the bottom looper 79 takes the loop off the needle 21, the loop carrying point then carries the loop to the top looper 78, which passes with its thread through the loop.
. The needle 21 now catches the loop formed by the top looper, and finally the said top looper 78 moves back and drops the stitch, whereupon the foregoing operation is again repeated. and this action of the machine is continuous during the working thereof.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a frame, a drive shaft mounted centrally of said frame, a work table carried by said frame, and having a slot, a pair of vertically spaced apart loopers, a clamp connecting said loopers, one of said loopers being arranged below and the other above .said work table, a horizontal guide member, a slide bar mounted in said guide membeiysaid clamp being connected to said slide bar for receiving movement therefrom, a vertical bearing, a shaft mounted in said bearing, a crank on said vertical shaft adapted to impart motion to said slide bar, and means connected to said drive shaft for operating said vertical shaft.
2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a frame, a horizontal work table mounted thereupon, a slotted throat plate carried by said table, a shaft, a bracket extending vertically from the base of said frame, a link arm pivoted upon said bracket, a vertically swinging arm carried.
