Application filed December 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER B. CRANE, citizen of the'United States, resident of Long Lake, Hennepin county, Minnes0ta,'have in? vented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which. the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a gate adapted particularly for farming purposes, equipped with means for easily and quickly raising or lowering it on its support.
A further object is to provide a gate which can be opened in either direction, with improved means for looking it in its closed position.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a detail view of the lever device for operating the gate, Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the means for holding the gate in its closed position.
In the drawing, 2 represents a post having brackets 3 mounted thereon in which a vertical rail 4 is adapted to rotate and slide vertically. This "rail is composed, preferably, of tubing and supports a gate by means of bolts 5 which pass through the end bar 6 of the gate frame. This end bar is preferably composed of angle metal and a similar bar 7 is provided at the opposite end of the gate. The top and bottom rails 8 and 9 are secured to these bars and the space inclosed by the bars and rails is provided with a suitable wire mesh 10. Upright braces 11 are provided between the top and bottom rails with a diagonal cross brace 12, and the brace 13 forms a continuation of the brace 12 to the upper end of the rail 1. The bar 7 extends upwardly to a point substantiallv on a level with the top of the rail 4 and is connected therewith by suitable means, such as a barbed wire strand 1 1 which extends parallel with the top rail of the gate and at a suitable distance therefrom to prevent any one from climbing over the gate. The gate is free to swing on the bearings in the brackets 3 and is also free to slide vertically inthese bearings fora limited distance. over this sheave and is attached to the coupling 18 between the rail 4: and the brace 13. The free end of the cable extends to a lever 19 that is pivoted at 20 on the top rail of the gate and is free to swing in a vertical plane to raise or lower the gate. A book.

These bolts have beveled ends and are adapted to slide by the outwardly projecting flange of V the angle bar 23, thereby locking the gate against movement in either direction, each latch being normally held in its closed position by means of a spring 28. The person on one side of the gate will retract the latch on that side and push the gate open from either side, and when the gate is closed the angle bar will contact with the beveled end of the retracted bolt and push it back sufficiently to slide by a spring 28, returning the latch and bolt to their normal position when the .qate is closed.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a post, of a gate frame mounted to swing and slide vertically thereon. a filler of wire mesh for said frame, a sheave mounted on said post above said frame, a lever pivoted at one end to said frame near the opposite end of said gate, a cable passing over said sheave and having one end attached to the middle portion of said lever and the other end to said frame. said lever having a hook at one end adapted to engage the strands of the wire mesh for locking said lever in different positions thereon, and a second post having a vertical guide for said gate.
2. The combination, with a post, of a gate frame mounted to swing and slide vertically thereon, a filler of wire, mesh for said frame. a sheave mounted on said post above the end rail of said gate at the hinged end thereof. a cable attached to said end rail and eX- tending vertically over said sheave, a lever pivotally connected at one end to said frame near the other end of said gate and having its middle portion connected to said cable, said' lever moving in a vertical plane to raise or lower said gate and having a means for engaging the meshes of the gate for supporting it at different elevations, and a see ond post having means for guiding said gate vertically.
3. The combination, with a post, of a gate comprising a frame and a filler therefor, an end rail whereto said gate is secured, braces connected with the upper portion of said end rail and extending diagonally to the top of said frame and from thence obliquely in said frame to the lower portion thereof for holding said frame in a substantially horizontal position when it is raised and lowered, and a lifting means connected to said end rail.
