Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom z' may concern Be it known that I, HARRY B. GARMAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drag-Links, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to drag-links, and particularly the end-portion of such links, which receives and contains the shock-absorbing springs. 'I
The object of the invention is to provide a drag-link construction which will include an end-portion simple and economical of construction and eflicient in its operation.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means embody-ing my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of various mechanicall forms in which the-principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawing :-Figure. 1 represents a broken side elevation of a complete drag-link embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents, upon an enlarged scale, an
axial section of one end of said link. Fig.
3 represents an axial section of the other end of said link. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section taken upon the plane indicated by line IV-IV, in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents an axial section taken upon the plane indicated by a line V-V, in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of one of the plugs forming an abutment-for one of the springs.
The illustrated embodiment of my invention comprises a drag-link each end of whichis provided with a tubular. member 1, these two members` being connected in any suitable manner by an intermediate tube, one end of which is shown to be integrally united with one of said tubular members 1 and the other end of which is shown to be detachably united to the other of said members 1. The construction as thus far described, however, forms no part of my present invention, the latter being directed specifically to the means for holding the mechanism in the interior of the members 1 and adjusting the tension of the springs forming elements of such mechanism. This interior mechanism referring to that end-portion of the drag link illustrated by Fig. 2, comprises two cylindrical bearing blocks 3, 3, each provided with a spherical bearing surface 4 each forming a bearing for the spherical journal 5 of the .connecting part 6, as will be readily understood and as is commonly used. A spring 7 is seated between the innermost bearing block 3 and the inner abutment surface 8 and an outer spring 9 bears against the outer end of the outer bearing block 3.
The outer end-portion 10 of the tubular member 1 is vprovided with an exterior thread'll and is preferably slotted as at 12. Engaging the thread 11 is the interior thread of a tubular cap 13. This interior thread extends part way only through the cap and terminates a short distance from an interior shoulder 14. Also terminating at this shoulder is a second threaded opening 1 5 of smaller diameter than the first-mentioned threaded opening of the cap and engaging this latter thread isa threaded block 16, the outer end of which is provided withl a slot 17 receiving a suitable tool for rotating the same. The inner end of this block is provided with a plain cylindrical portion 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6 which is intersected by a slot 19. The end-portion 12 of the member 1 is furthermore provided with cylindrical openings 20 diametrically disposed and the cap 13 is provided with similar diametrically disposed openings 21.
It will be seen that the cap 13. and plug 16 may be turned so Vas to bring openings 20, 21 and the slot 19 into alinement with each other whereby a cotter pin 22 may be passed through all three of these members and lock the same securely together. It will also be seen -that the cap and plug may be turned to assume Various positions with re-' lation to each other and with relation to the member 1, and still permit the Cotter pin 22 to be inserted so as to lock all three members together. The outer end of the spring 9 bears against the inner end of the plug 16 which inner end therefore forms an abutment for such outer spring end.
It will thus be seen that as a result of the above-described arrangement, whereby the previously mentioned adjustment may be obtained, the degree of force exerted by the springs may be adjusted to meet the requirements and the parts When so adjusted locked securely together against displacement.
In so far as concerns the subject-mattei' of this invention, the construction illustrated by Fig. 3 is precisely the same as that illustrated by Fig. 2, this illustrated end of the drag-link Containing but a single spring, namely the outer spring 9.
Having fully described my invention, what I Claim and desire to.seeure by Letters Patent:
l. In a drag-link, the combination of a tubular member; an adjustable member mounted upon said tubular member; and an adjustable abutment member mounted in said first-named adjustable member; and means for locking both said adjustable members to said tubular member.
2. In a drag-link7 the combination of'a tubular member; having an eXteriorlythreaded end-portion; an interiorly threaded tubular cap adapted to engage the latter;
adjustable means in said cap adapted to form an abutment for a spring; and means adapted to both lock said cap and abutment means to each other and to look said cap and abutment means to said tubular mem ber.
3. In a drag-link, the-combination oit` a tubular member having an eXteriorlythreaded endportion.; an interiorly-threaded tubular cap adapted to engage the latter; an adjustable plug in the outer end of said. Cap adapted to form an abutment for a spring; said cap and end-portion being provided with openings capableffof being brought into alinement with each other and said plug formed with a slot capable of being brought into alinement with said openings; and a Cotter pin passing through said openings and slot whereby said tubular member, cap and plug may be locked to each other by' said Cotter pin.
