To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DAvID HINDAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car door operating mechanism, and has for its object to provide new and improved mechanism of the type described.
The main object of my invention is to provide an improved operating mechanism for actuating the dump doors of a car, this mechanism consisting in arms rotatably mounted upon a rotatable shaft pivotally connected at their extremities to other arms, in turn attached to the dump doors. In addition, I provide crank arms fixed to the rotatable shafts which coact with the first named arms to effect closing of the doors. These crank arms are also utilized to effect the initial movement from closedposition of the actuating mechanism thereby permitting the doors to open and discharge the contents of the car. I further provide means attached to the car and coacting with the arms of the actuating mechanism to support the doors and their load in closed position. These and other objects will be set forth and more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanyingdrawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a portion of a car showing a door in closed position; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a door in open position; Fig. 4 is a detail of the shaft operating mechanism; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the operating mechanism with the doors in closed position; Fig. 6 is a detail section along the line 66 of Fig. 2, the shaft being shown in elevation; and Fig. 7 a detail view showing the crank arm in elevation.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings, in which 10 designates generally a car having the side walls 11 attached to the side stakes 12, and further provided with the dump doors 13. Each of these doors 1,3 is provided with the bracket member 14 attached to the under side of said doors and projecting downwardly and outwardly therefrom at the front edge thereof, see Figs. 2 and 3, for example.
Each of these brackets is .provided with the slot 14 in the lower portion and'a-rod or shaft 15 extends between these brackets and 1s normally seated in the slots 14*, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. shaft 16 is provided running longitudinally of the car at the side thereof, this shaft being preferably non-circular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 5. At suitable intervals along the shaft 16 are provided sleeves 17 apertured to closely fit the rods 16 and further secured thereto by means of bolts 18 or the like extending therethrough, see Fig 6. These sleeves are of circular periphery and have a portion thereof fitting 1n bracket bearings 19, bolted orotherwise secured to the stakes 12. This insures bearing of the shaft 16 such as will permit its easy rotation.
Carried by, and preferably formed integral with the sleeve 17, are the short crank arms 17 having the hooked portion 17 adapted to engage a thimble 20, see Figs. 2, 3 and 6. The crank arms 17 are each provided with a cam face l7 as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. Rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 17 is the arm'21 formed of spaced apart strips 21*, the same being inwardly bent adjacent their top portions, as viewed in Fig. 5, a pin 22 extending between said top extremities. The thimble 20 extends between the strips 21 adjacent their mounting on the sleeve,l7, this thimble 20 being held in position by the pin or rivet 23 and serving to maintain the.strips 21 in spaced relation as well as being arranged for engagement by the hooked portion 17 of crank-arm 17 vided, each,being attached at one extremity to the rod 15, and pivotally connected by means of the pins 22 to the arms 21 adjacent their other extremity, the arms 25 having their ends fitting between spaced apart strips 21 as shown in Fig. 5, for example. The slots 25 are provided at one end of each of the arms 25, the pins 22 extending through these slots 25 to permit a slight amount of relative sliding-of arms 25 with respectto arms 21. This results in the doors 13 being brought to tightly closed position, being supported in this position by. means of arms 25 and supporting rollers 27.

against reverse rotation, will prevent accidental opening of the doors. It will thus be seen that the load carried by the doors is directly supported by means of arm 25 and supporting rollers 27. I arrange and construct the mechanism so that when in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, the center of 1 support of arms 25 is approximately in vertical alinement with the center-of the shaft 16, this arrangement also contributing to prevention of accidental movement of the mechanism from closed position. When it is desired to open or permit the opening of doors 13, a reverse rotation is imparted to the shaft 16, whereupon the outer cam face 17 of the crank arm 17 will contact with a 1 face of the arm 25 at the cut-away portion 25 and will operate to positively force the same from closed position permitting the door or doors to drop with their own weight and the weight of the load thereon, and requiring only a small torque to be applied to shaft 16 to effect or permit opening of the doors. To provide for rotation of the shaft 16, I attach the star or ratchet wheel 30 adjacent the end thereof. A sleeve 31 is mounted upon and attached to the shaft 16 adjacent the star wheel 30 and a socket member 32 is provided, this socket member having a ring portion'32 rotatably mounted upon thesleeve 31. A pawl or dog 33 is pivotall attached to the socket member 32 and may be thrown into engagement with the star wheel 30 so that when a lever or handle is fitted in the socket member 32, proper oscillation thereof will result in rotation of the shaft 16, as will be apparent. A locking pawl 34, a portion of which is shown in Fig. 4, is provided to lock the shaft 16, when desired, against rotation from closing position.
It will be apparent from the above .description that I have provided a new and improved car door operating mechanism. While the embodiment shown and described is susceptible of many modifications and changes, I do not wish to be restricted to such form beyond the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a car having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, an. arm operatively connected to said door, a second arm rotatably mounted upon said shaft and pivotally connected with said first arm, and means carried by said shaft to engage said second arm to effect closing of said door upon rotation of said shaft said means being arranged to coact with said first arm upon reverse rotation of said shaft to oper atively move said arms from door-closing position.
2. In combination with a car having a dump door, an operating shaft, arms operatively connecting said shaft and door, and
means carried by said shaft to engage one of said arms to close. said door upon rotation of said shaft, and to engage another of said arms upon reverse rotation to positively glove said arms from position closing said oor.
3. In combination with a car having a dump door, an operating shaft, arms operatively connecting said'shaft and door, and means carried by said shaft to engage one of said arms to close said door upon rotation of said shaft, said means being arranged to move another of said arms upon reverse rotation of said shaft to positively move said arms from position closing said door.
4. In combination with a car having a dump door, an operating shaft, an arm rotatably mounted upon said shaft and operatively connected to said door, said arm being provided with a pin member, and a crank arm carried by said shaft, said crank arm being arranged to engage said pin member upon proper rotation of said shaft whereby said first named arm will be operated to close said door.
5., In combination with a car having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, an arm rotatably mounted on said shaft, a second arm operatively connected to said door, said arms being operatively connected, and a crank arm carried b said shaft and arranged to operate said first named arm upon proper rotation of said shaft to effect the closing of said door and to operate said second arm upon a reverse rotation. of said shaft to permit the opening of said door.
6. In combination with acar having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, an arm. rotatably mounted on said shaft, a second. arm operatively connected to said door, said arms being operatively connected, a crank arm carried by said shaft and arranged to operate said first named arm upon proper rotation of said shaft to effect the closing of said door, and a supporting member, one of said arms being arranged to coact with said member to support said door when in closed position.
7. In combination with a car having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, an arm rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a second arm operatively connected. to said door and pivotally connected to said first named arm, a crank arm carried by said shaft and arranged to rotate said first named arm upon proper rotation of said shaft to close said door, said second named arm being provided with a portion lying adjacent sald crank .arm when said door is in closed position,
and a supporting member, said second named arm being adapted to rest upon andbe supported by said supporting member when in closed position.
8. In combination with a car having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, a sleeve member secured to said shaft, an arm rotatably mounted upon said sleeve member, said arm being provided with a pin, a second arm operatively connected to said door, said arms being pivotally connected, and a crank arm carried by said sleeve, said crank arm being adapted to engage said pin to rotate 'said first arm on roper rotation of said shaft.
9. In com ination with a car having a dump door, a rotatable shaft, an arm rotatably mounted upon said shaft, said arm being constructed of spaced apart strips, a crank arm attached to said shaft and located between said strips, and a pin extending between said strips, said crank arm being adapted to engage said pin upon proper rotation of said shaft, said first named arm being operatively connected to said door.
