FILM-RECEPTACLE FOR MOVING-PICTURE MACHINES.

The object of my present invention is to I provide greater security against the adnnssion of fire to the magazines or receptacles containing the films. TlllS ()bJPCl) 1s accomplished by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a kinetoscope embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the film receptacles having the side next the beholder removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of one of the film receptacles, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the inclosed passage from the periphery of the film receptacle to the winding spool.

Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings 1 denotes a casing containing the film carrying and moving mechanism. 2 is a receptacle from which the film is taken and 3 a receptacle in which the film is wound, said receptacles being duplicates of each other. The
film receptacle comprises a spool having a barrel 4: and heads 4 and 6 attached thereto, capable of turning loosely upon a spindle 7 held in suitable brackets 8. The peripheries of the spool heads 5 and 6 are inclosed by an annular band comprising half sections 9 and 10 hinged together at 11 and united upon the opposite side of the receptacle by a latch 12 of any suitable construction. The section 10 of the annular case is rigidly attached to a platform 13 by which the casing is held concentrically with the spindle 7, allowing the spool heads 5 and 6 to turn freely therein. An opening 14 is provided in the annular band for the passage of the film, and to prevent undue friction upon the moving film I place in said opening a pair of rolls 15 and 16 between which the film is delivered to or from the spool. Pivoted concentrically with the roll 16 is a trough 17 carrying a friction roll 18 at its free end and Specification of Letters Patent.

pivoted concentrically with the roll 15 is a cover 19 for the trough 17, provided with sides 20 and 21 which overlap the sides of the trough 17 to form an inclosed passage between the friction rolls 15 and 16 and the roll of film carried upon the barrel 4. The magazine for receiving the film shown at the lower part of Fig. 1 is a duplicate of the upper receptacle from which the film is delivered, but its spindle 7 is provided with a pulley 22 by which the spindle is rotated, and its rotative movement is imparted to the spool by means of a pin 23, Fig. 3, which enters a recess 24 in the barrel 4 of the spool.
During the movement of the film through the machine it is withdrawn from the spool in the upper receptacle through the inclosed passage formed by the trough 17 and cover 19 and delivered from the receptacle between the friction rolls l5 and 16, and during the winding process in the lower film receptacle the film is made to pass to the winding spool through a duplicate inclosed passage. Should the exposed portion of the film accidentally become ignited, its combustion will not extend far beyond the friction rolls at the-mouth of the inclosed passage, as the flame will be instantly smothered and extinguished by lack of oxygen within the inclosed passage.
The film moving mechanism forms no part of my present inventionas it is substantially the same as that shown in my pending application, Serial No. 588,375, filed October 21, 1910.
I claim 1. In a film receptacle, a cylindrical casing for inclosing a coil of film, having an opening in its cylindrical wall for the passage of film to or from said coil, and means for inclosing the film between said opening and said coil.
2. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, having an opening, in its wall for the passage of film to or from said coil, and means carried bysaid casing for inclosing the film between said opening and said coil.
3. In a film receptacle, a casing having an opening in its wall .for the passage of a strip of film, and means within said casing and leading from said opening for inclosing said film.
4. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of fihn, having an opening in its wall for the passage of film to or from said coil, and means for inclosing the film between said opening and the periphery of said coil.
5. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, having an opening in its wall 'for the passage of film to or from said coil, and means providing an inclosed passageway for the film between said opening and the periphery of said coil.
6. In a film receptacle, a casing for 111' closing a coil of film having an openin in its wall for the passage of film to or irom said coil, and means pivoted to said casing for inclosing the film between said opening and the periphery of said coil.
7. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, comprising hinged sections, a spool rotatably mounted within said casing, and a device hinged to one of said sections adapted to rest at its free end on the periphery of said spool. for defining a passageway between the wall of the easing and the periphery of the coil.
8. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, and a device defining a passageway for inclosing the film in its passage to and from said coil, said device being hinged at one end to said casing.
9. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, having anopening for the passage of film to and from said coil, a trough for inclosing the film between said opening and said coil, leading from said opening, and a cover for'said trough, said cover being hinged to said casing.
10. In a film receptacle, a casing for inclosing a coil of film, having an opening for the passage of film to or from said coil, a pair of guide rolls mounted in said opening, a trough pivoted concentrically with one of said rolls for inc-losing the film between said opening and the periphery of said coil, and a cover for said trough piyotcd concentrically with the other of said rolls.
