To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Penny Baowrv. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coraopolis. in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for ,Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to 'brakes intended particularly for use on railway cars and more particularly tohand operated brakes adapted to be secured to the ends of freight cars,.although it will be obvious that the brake is capable of use on other cars.
The object of the invention is to construct a brake which is exceedingly simple in construction, unlikely to get out of order and which can be easily operated by a brakeman with the use of one hand.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts shown, in their preferable embodiment, in the drawings accompanying and forming part hereof.
In the aforesaid drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of part of the end of a freight car with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view with the back plate removed. Fig. et is a perspective view of several of the parts detached. Fig. 5 is a detail showing a modified form. Fig. 6

The rear side of the casing is intended to be closed by a cover 6 and a bolt 8 passes through an opening in the downwardly projecting arm 4 and through the casing 3 and also through an opening in the cover 6 into the end plate of a car, and thereby secures the frame of my brake to the car. An additional bolt or securing means 10 may be employed at the upper end as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The downwardly 'projecting arm 4 is provided with a lug 12 adapted to co-act with one of the flat sides of the head of the bolt 8 and thus prevent saidlbolt from turning. the downwardly projecting arm -1- is provided with a large annular recess 14, and the casing 23 is provided with an opening 15 of the same diameter as the recess 1-1 in the arm 4;. This makes it possible to insert a drum 16 through the casing, before the cover has been applied, the drum having one head or flange 17 finding a bearing in the recess 14. and another head or flange 1S finding a bearing in the opening 15. The aforesaid bolt 8 ,passes through this drum 16 from one end to the other thereof. The
drum is formed with a lug 20 preferably cast The rectangular member 22 is designed to fit into'a similar opening in a ratchet wheel 24 so that the ratchet wheel -is compelled to rotate with the brake drum 1(3 whenever said drum is rotated. The annular portion 23 is intended to form a trunnion to fit into a link or crank 25 so that the link or crank 25 may be moved upon said trunnion 23 as a pivot. The trunnion 23 projects just sufficiently from the end of the head 18 of the drum 16 to contact with the inside of the cover 6 so that when said cover is placed in position and the bolt 8 inserted in place, there isjust sufficient space left between the squared portion 22 and the cover 6 to permit the easy swinging of the link or crank 25 upon its trunnion 23.
The link or crank 25 has formed preferably integrally therewith, a stud 26 upon which is pivotally secured the operating lever or handle 27, this handle 27 having its upper end projecting into the casing 3 and having an opening 28 therein within which fits the aforesaid stud 26. bearings in said casing and arm, a 'atchet wheel in said casing movable with said drum, a link or crank journaled within the casing, and an operating lever or handle pivotally carried by said link or crank and having a pawl co-acting with said ratchet wheel, said operating lever or handle being .arranged to drop by gravity to a substantially vertical position to release the pawl from the ratchet wheel and to move said ratchet wheel and drum as the handle is moved upwardly on said link.
22. In a device of the character described, a framework comprising a casing and an arm, a chain shaft journaled in said casing and arm, a ratchet wheel movable with said chain shaft, an operating lever or handle having a pawl entering said casing and co-acting with said ratchet wheel, and a bolt passing through the aforesaid casing, arm and chain shaft.
23. In a device of the character described, a casing adapted to be secured to the end of a car, a chain shaft journaled therein and having a flat sided end projecting within the casing, a ratchet wheel having an opening to fit said flat sided end of the chain shaft wherebv the chain shaft and ratchet wheel must turn together, and an o ierating lever or handle entering said casing and arranged to drop by gravity to a substantially vertical position to release said ratchet wheel and to move said ratchet wheel and rotate the chain shaft as the handle is moved upwardly.
