To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BLAINE JENKINS and TOY "C. HAYES, citizens of the United States, residing at Leona Mines, inthe county of Lee and State of Virginia, have.
invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

when unduly worn or otherwise unfitted for use, may be readily and conveniently re placed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved drill whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,
all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac-' companying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view with a portion broken away of'a drill constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the entering end of the drill and through the shanks of the bits; Fig. 3 is an elevational view, detached, of the split sleeve as herein embodied; and Fig. 4: is a of the shank of a bit.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated twisted drill substantially of a type generally employed in mining operations and having its penetrating end substantally fiat and provided with the inwardly directed sockets 2 preferably pyramidal in form and which are,
adapted to receive the pyramidal shanks 3 of the bits 4, said bits 4 being disposed lonpointintermediate the fragmentary view in elevation gitudinally on a predetermined curvature,
as the necessities of practice may require. The penetrating end of the drill 1 at a sockets 2 is provided with an opening 5 intersectingthe inner end portions of the sockets 2 and in which is inserted the split sleeve or ferrule 6 produced on a predetermined taper and having its bore threaded to receive the shank of the screw member 7 whereby it will be perceived that the sleeve or ferrule 6 may be expanded in order to be properly seated within the recesses or notches 8 produced in the adjacent faces of the shank 8 whereby the bits 4 may be conveniently and effectively maintainediin applied position. It will be self-evident that when it is desired to remove a bit 4,'it is only necessary to re move the screw member. 7.
By constructing a drill in accordance with an embodiment of our invention, it will be at once self-evident that the drill 1 proper may be produced of a cheaper grade of material as it is only essential that the bits 4 be made of high grade steel or the like.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to. be obvious that a drill constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted'for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification" without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our in-- vention in practice.
We claim: I y 1. In combination with a drill having its entering and provided with a socket and having an opening disposed therethrough intersecting the socket, an expansible member disposed through the opening, ,means for expanding said member, and a bit having a shank insertible within the socket, said shank being provided with a recess to receive the expansible member.
