My invention relates to typewriter desks and cabinets, and the objects of the invention are :first, to combine inone piece of furniture a chair and a desk for a typewriting machine, such chair adapted when not in use to occupy a position underneath the desk to with the back thereof coiiperating with fol able sides and a cover member on the desk to form a cabinet for inclosing the machine and excluding the same from dust and dirt; second, to provide a device as just described that will be neat and simple but substantial in construction, occupying when in closed position but a minimum amount of space, and with the parts so operating as to be very easily and readily moved from closed to open position or vice versa; and third, to provide on the chair and members forming ceptacles for holding paper, envelops, note books, pencils and other articles required by the operator. I attain these objects by a combination desk, cabinet and chair such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

At 1 is seen the desk top having a back 2 secured thereto and extending :upwardly. These top and back members are supported on three,--two side and one rear,pairs of standards or legs formed, preferably, of tu bular metal and substantially as shown. Each pan of side legs comprises two pieces of pipe 3 and 4 forming arcs of tangential circles bolted together at their point of tangency and having their upper and lower ends flattened, the upper ends being secured to the underside of the top 1 and the lower ends or feet being mounted on casters 6. The rear legs 5 are similarly formed but are at right angles to the side legs, the lower ends thereof being bolted onto the feet of the rear side legs 3 while their upper ends are extended and secured by screws to the back 2. An extension slide member 7 for supportmg a machine, as indicated in dotted lines 'at 8 in Fig. 4, is adapted to move forward and back in a channel formed therefor in the desk top 1 and is held against displacement by plates 9 secured on the top 1 which engage in grooves formed in the side edges of the slide, see Figs. 7 and 8.

Extension leaves 10 which when folded up form the sides of the cabinet are flexibly connected by hinges 11 to opposite sides of Y the desk top 1, and a cover section 12 is' connected by hinges 13 to the upper edge of the rigid back member 2. This back member is recessed at 14. along its side edges to receive the leaves or sides 10 and to-form an abutment therefor, while the cover section 12 has cleats 15 extending parallel with its side edges and adapted to engage within the sides 10 when the parts are 'in folded position. V

Fastened .by means of screws against the inner side of the back 2 at each lower corner thereof is a triangular plate 16 provided with an outwardly extending flange 17 along the upperpart of-its outer edge adapted to engage in overlapping relation, see Figs. 7, 8 and 9, a'similar flange 18 extending rearwardly froma triangular plate 19 having a flange along its lower edge whereby the plate is secured with screws in a vertical position to one of the side leaves 10. The engaging flanges 17 and 18 on the pairs of cooperating plates 16 and 19 act as means for preventing undue strain on the hinges 11. Each plate 19 also comprises a lever and has, pivoted thereto on a bolt 20 one end of a wire rod 21 the other end of which is bent at substantially a right angle a i v I 1,185,770 I to form a short projection which pivotally engages in a clip 22 secured to the inner side of one of the cleats 15 on the cover section 12 near the lower end of such clcat when the cover section is raised, asin Fig. 7. In consequence of the connecting means just described, raising or lowering the sides 10 will cause a lowering or raising, respectively, of the cover section 12. I

The feet of the front side legs 4 have secured thereon inwardly extending plates 23 which are bent downwardly just. inside thereof, and to these downward projections on bolts 24 are pivoted the ends of arms 25 formed from and extending at right angles to a rod 26 rotatably supported in bearing plates 27 secured to and extending rearwardly from the front legs 28 of a chair 29 near their lower ends. This chair 29 is of the ordinary type having the front legs .28, rear legs 30 and seat 31 but the back thereof is formed in two sections 32 and 33, the lower section 32 being rigid and reinforced by bars 34 comprising extensions of the legs 30 while the upper section is flexibly connected to the lower by hinges 35. When the parts are in folded position, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the section 32 of the chair back forms the front of the cabinet while the top section is bentforward and comprises a part of the cabinet cover. The section 33 is prevented from being swung backward beyond its sub stantially vertical position by links 36 pivotally connected to the inside lower ends of cleats 37 extending parallel with the side edges of the section and having suitable means as rollers 38 onitheir lower ends slidable in vertically disposed slots 39 in the members 34. such rollers being held against displacement by plates .O slottcd to permit free movement of the links or rods 36, The seat is hinged along its rear edgc to the chair body and forms a r-cover. adapted to be raised as indicated in dbtted lines at ll in Fig. 4, for a box like receptacle 4:2 supported by and between the chair legs. Another receptacle 43 for holding letter heads, etc., is formed on the inner side of the cover section 12 between the cleats 15 and comprises a front piece 44 spaced from the cover by and secured to side strips 45 and a bottom strip 46. A rack for holding envelops is also provided consisting of longitudinally extending bars 47 secured to vertical spacing pieces 48 on the back 2.

In Fig. 10 there is shown at -19 a modification of one of the side leaves, such member being made hollow to comprise a receptacle for containing carbon paper and the like and having a portion of its top face forming a cover hinged at 50 so as to swing upwardly, as indicated in dotted lines at 51.

be used to hold this cover in closed position. In this figure the adjacent sides of the leaf 4!) and desk top 1 are recessed so as to overlap, as shown.

\Vhcn the typcwriter is not being used, it is incloscd within the cabinet in which the desk top 1 and back 2 form the bottom and 17a back, respectively, leaves 10 the sides, the lower section 32 of the chair back the front, and the cover section 12 and the upper section 33 of the chair backthc cover, the latter members being held together by any suitable 763 locking means as the latch 52 and screw eye 53. The chair is supported otf of the floor and beneath the desk top 1 by the arms 25 engaging over pins 5- extending inwardly from the desk legs 4. \Vhen the machine is so to be used the latch 52 is released from the eye as, the chair tipped backward, as in Fig.

5. and swung to the position seen in- Fig. 4:. The sides 10 are then lowered, forming extension leaves of the dcsk top, and at the at same time the cover section 12 is caused to swing upwardly by the operation of the plate levers 19 and rods 21 to a substantially vertical position thus forming a continuation of the back :2 and in which position it is rigidly held by the rods :21 until the sides 10 are again raised. The slide 7 may be moved forward if desired to bring the machine 8 nearer to the operator; and attention is called to the fact that when the parts are in open position the connecting arms 25 lie on the floor so that the operator will not trip thereover when being seated or arising from the chair, and that the shape of the desk legs 4 provides ample room for free we movement of the knees. A suitable handle 55 is secured to the rigid section 32 of the chair back and may be taken hold of when swinging the chair to and from its position underneath the desk and when moving the device about on the casters 6.

It is believed that from the foregoing description the construction. manner of using. and purposc of my combination desk, cabinet and chair are suliiciently clear to call 11o ffll'dlt) further explanation herein.

hat I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a machine supporting or bottom member and a back secured thereto. of side leaves hinged to 'said button member, a cover section hinged to said back, levers secured to said side leaves, and rods pivotally connected to said levers and to the said cover section. such rods operating to no raise and lower the cover section when the side leaves are lowered and raised, respec tively, and to rigidly hold the cover section in substantially a vertical position-When the leaves are in open position. a

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a machine supporting or bottom member and a back secured thereto, of side leaves hinged to said bottom member, a cover section hinged to said back, 180

levers secured to said side leaves, rods pivotally connected to said levers and to the said cover section, such rods operating to raise and lower the cover section when the side leaves are lowered and raised, respectively, and to rigidly hold the cover section in substantially a vertical position when the leaves are in open position, and cooperating engaging means on said levers and said back adapted to limit the downward movement of the said leaves.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a machine supporting or bottom member and a back secured thereto, of side leaves hinged to said bottom member, a cover section hinged to said back, plates secured to said back and said side leaves, said plates being provided with cooperating engaging members adapted to limit the downward movement of said leaves, and rods pivotally connected to the plates on said leaves and to said cover section, such rods operating to raise and lower the cover section when the side leaves are lowered and raised, respectively, and to rigidly hold the cover section in substantially a vertical position when the leaves are in open position.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a. machine supporting or bottom member and a back secured thereto, of side leaves hinged to said bottom memher, a cover section hinged to said back, cooperating plates secured to said back and said side leaves, said plates being provided with flanges adapted to en age in overlapping relation to limit the ownward movement of said leaves, and rods pivotally connected to the plates on said side leaves and to said cover section, all substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. The combination with a desk for the purpose described having a top and supporting legs therefor, of a back, members hinged to said top and back adapted when folded up to form the sides and the rear cover section of a cabinet. a chair having a back thereon comprising a rigid lower section and an upper section hinged to the lower section, pivotal connections between said chair and said desk legs whereby the chair may be swung to occupy an upright position with said lower chair back section forming the front of said cabinet and said upper section forming the front cover section thereof, and means for locking said cabinet cover sections together.

6. The combination with a desk for the purpose described having a top and supporting legs therefor, of a back, members hinged to said top and back adapted when folded up to form the-sides and rear cover section of a cabinet, a chair having a back thereon comprising a rigid lower section and an upper section hinged to the lower section, such chair being adapted to occupy a position under the said desk top with said lower chair back section forming the front of said cabinet and said upper section forming the front cover section thereof, and means for locking said cabinet cover sections together.

7. The combination with a desk for the purpose described having a top and supporting legs therefor, of a back, members hinged to said top adapted when folded up to form the sides of a cabinet, a chair having a back thereon comprising a rigid lower section and an upper section hinged to the lower section, and pivotal connections between said chair and said desk legs whereby the chair may be swung to occupy an upright position with said lower chair back section forming the front of said cabinet and said upper section forming a cover member thereof.

8. The combination with a desk for the purpose described having a to and supporting legs therefor, of a bac members hinged to said top adapted when folded up to form the sides of a cabinet, a chair having a hinged back thereon, and pivotal connections between said chair and said desk legs whereby the chair may be swung to occupy a position under the said desk top with the hinged back forming one of the cover members of said cabinet.
